I've just gone through the tutorials and played my 2nd ranked game and the program allowed my computer opponent to castle on the queen side eventhough I controlled one of the square he castled over with one of my bishops.

Has anyone else experience some basic chess rule violations?

I'd be happy to. I'm a first time user. Is there a log file or something I can download?

absolutly NOT. Enough evidence to show is that nobody else complained about it since the day Chessmaster grandmaster edition was released in November 2nd 2007!!!

Why that's an incredibly hostile response. I'm not trying to denigrate the product or anything. Just sharing what I've experienced. I've also logged a ticket with support.

I'd be happy to copy a log file, if there is one. I can't video the game because it's already been played.

I don't understand this hostile response? I have nothing to gain from this.

As you point out, could be my small understanding of the rules. My bishop was at D6. I'm asserting the black player could not castle because my bishop controlled the empty square B8.

FYI.

I think the castle was legal since the *king* does not pass over or onto b8, only c8 and d8 are affected. Thus a bishop attacking b8 doesn't hinder queenside castling. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but that would explain it.

I assume that English is not your first language and you haven't used the Internet before. Here are some guidelines to posting in a forum.

3. No one cares how experienced you are with Chessmaster. If a member wishes to say that he/she has had a problem with Chessmaster loading up Monopoly boards instead of a chess board, that is their prerogative. This is a public forum and people are well within their rights to air any concerns they might have.

4. You and ebutaljib may post often on this board, but quantity should not be confused with quality. Neither of you two have any special status in my eyes. You two are simply CMXI users just like the rest of us.

You have only wasted your time posting this. You have only 6 posts instead of filling that number with some more constructive threads or posts you are actually attacking me.

secondly I did not try to show off with how much experience I have with chessmaster, we all know very little. What I was trying to say which you apparently have misunderstood is the experience shows how much you know about it and what kind of bugs there are init.

And since we know that better than most of the newbies who recently bought CM GM edition we are trying to guide them in the RIGHT direction, so that they do not have a wrong impression about the game such as castling bug, etc. I do apologies if I had been rude in anyway.
Your made up guide lines does not apply to me because I didn't use all CAPS as you have mentioned I used a mixture between small and big. Cap locks are not always considered as shouting and if you could understand the point you won't be insulted by it, a bit more Maturity is required from you!

No he is not correct there's no need to give him credit for something you don't believe yourself.

Yelling (or posting in capitals) is rude and it's an attack. Using profanity is abusive. You did both. Syne7 may have been wrong but it was an honest mistake and it certainly never warranted your disrespectful and abusive response.

Look, if all you were doing was protesting against his accusation all you needed to do was ask for proof. There was no need to SHOUT or use profanity.

By the way, accusing someone of being a manipulator and of having low self-esteem (interesting combo by the way - not sure if those two go together all that well) is what we call an ad-hominem attack. This is a tactic often used by people who are unschooled in the art of argument, or by cynics who are hoping their audience is either ignorant or not paying attention, and that their opponent is likely to react emotionally to the attack. Ofcourse people in here are intelligent no doubt about that, as a matter oh fact the players in these forums are averegly more intelligent than the players from other gaming forums. Because chess requires a lot of thinking process it differs completely from other games. Yes there's pool, snooker, soccer alot of tactical battle in it but it cannot match closer to chess. I don't think an unintelligent person will spend his time in a chess forum.
There are alot of posts I have made which are useful and helpful and most people have agreed with me such as the "Join" button greyed out during online play, etc.
Actually I am not acting in a poor manner I am constantly correcting my faults and learning everyday something new and appreciating as to whats being said by other people. I am even correcting myself against the attacks made from you I thank you for that

While I am new to this forum, I am not new to chess...yet the castling question threw me, too. I have to admit that I also would have felt chastised had I been the original poster.

But, the responses have certainly been entertaining

I can't comment on your game, but I can say that in over 637 years of playing various CM games it has never made an illegal move on me. It's the one thing it refuses to do. It will crush me, twist me around like a pretzel, humiliate me in front of company, pretend it's a patzer so I can win a game sometimes, all of those things. But it never cheats. (And it probably knows that if it did, I'd just restart the game and all its cheating would be for nothing.) (Then I would lose legally--again, lol).

I read a review of a new CM version once, and it pretty well summed it up for me:
"Should you get one of the newer versions? It depends on whether you want to be badly beaten, really badly beaten, or really REALLY badly beaten."

Yes, it turns out that the error was mine. I'm new to Chess and did not understand the castling rules properly.

I mistakenly believed that if I controlled any of the squares between the King and Rook he castled with, I could prohibit him from castling.

It turns out that holds true only for the squares the king passes over.
