Yeah, it was Battle Chess by a company called Interplay... it was fun (I actually beat it once!) It rekindled my desire to play chess.  I think I've still got a copy of it somewhere...

Wow, that's retro.
On watching the youtube clips, it brings me a sense of deja vu. I seem to recognise both the screen layout with animated pieces and the music. Especially the music. Has it been used in anything else because I'm sure I've heard it before.

 One of my first games ever. The bishop takes king scene was my favorite. If I remember correctly the chessboard was wrongly placed

I used to have an Amiga way back when and also played Battle Chess. I spent hours setting up different scenarios so I could see all the capture animations. I cracked up the most when I checkmated with a pawn. That was hilarious.

Ah... I did the same thing! If I remember right, the pawn used his lance to steal the king's crown -- upon which the king threw a tantrum!  Fun memories...
