Hi!
How do I modify the settings so that when I play a game in training mode, or in opening mode I see MY opening book! So I can see the changes I made to my own opening book in the game itself, meaning the icons and all (you know the three dots) the way I set it up! I tried everything, the INI files, editing mentor.obk, and even CMX.obk but nothing! It would suck real real bad if there wasnt a way i can PLAY WITH MY OWN PLAYBOOK!!!! thanks Derrick |

Also...
Can i get a bried explanation as to what the CM.ini file does and its features... Also the CMDefault.ini file, whats the difference between them. I also have a 64big operating system and a 64bit processor i would like to use in the program. How do i edit the file so that it works! ..... [engine] ttable_size=21 book=Mentor.OBK threads_count=1 Engine64_enabled=0 AutoDetectSettings=1 EngineVersion=2 what is that! can i edit that stuff? will it work? i tried the book and it didnt change nothing. I WANT TO USE MY OWN PLAYBOOK MAN!!! and i also want to utilize my 64bit OS and CPU!!! i dont care about how bad it may run and all that horse.... thanks! |

It sounds like you may be changing the wrong INI file...
The file you should modify is: C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition\Data\Users\UserName\UserName.ini Substitute your user name for 'UserName'. Change the line for 'book' to use your custom opening book. Change the line 'Engine64_enabled' to 1 (if it isn't already). Hope this helps! |

Messing with the *.ini files - yes, thats the way to go - to disaster!

Is there another way to do this?
Keep in mind that I don't recommend playing around with the INI file unless absolutely necessary... |

It's nothing wrong with modifying the *.ini file - if you know what you are doing. You have to know which file to modify and where (it's not the same if you use XP or Vista).
But in this case everything can be easely achived within the Chessmaster interface. To use the 64 bit engine one must go to "Preferences--Engine" and set the slider to high (under "Chess engine used). Also you have to restart Chessmaster for settings to take affect. If he wants Chessmaster to use a custom book, then why not simply create the personality with exactly the same settings as Chessmaster, but assigning it the custom book instead of CMX.obk? |

Hey
1. I would agree that its a bad idea, if you dont know what your doing, in any case always make a copy of the original file that you plan on tweaking! 2. all i did was change two lines, from: ttable_size=21 book=Mentor.OBK threads_count=1 Engine64_enabled=0 AutoDetectSettings=1 EngineVersion=2 to: ttable_size=21 book=Mybook.OBK threads_count=1 Engine64_enabled=1 AutoDetectSettings=1 EngineVersion=2 But BTW, it didnt fully work so i changed it back, it seems that chessmaster only recognized the first two or three moves then it doesnt continue with my playbook. Im looking into it, it may be because i copied the CMX.obk and used it to create mine, i might need to create one of my own from zero, but that so far isnt working either. shouldnt there be an option IN the game that you can select certain things. likes Users: Settings... there you can select and tweak anything you want with a user friendly interface and then it should work, i mean the playbook too, if i make an opening with 60 moves, i should be able to follow it to the end, with the dots on the pieces and all, oh and why just 60 moves, why the lame limitations??? pathetic in my opinion. I hope i learn from my mistakes i had CMX9, CMX10, and i bought this one cause i thought it would really be better, but its not what i thought it would be, i once emailed CMX a bunch of great ideas, and they did nothing about them, heck i mean NOTHING! even the clips with Josh, theyre 90% the same from CMX10, which sucks, since i thought they would all be new, and the new ones are VERY VERY ANNOYING with click next every time, he should just go on with explaining, i dont want to click on a button every second to continue, i thought that was pathetic, and the announced moves like "Night F three" is really lame since it hasnt been changed either, basically the only difference is in the engine, and even there i see a lot of improvment needed, nothing of a big change from CMX10, i am very upset at ubisoft and this grandmaster edition, the only upside is the visual enhancments and thats not enough for me. Thanks, Derrick Steven |

Now that you've got that off your chest, do you feel better?
I take it you purchased Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition just recently... did you take some time before that to review some of the posts here? If so, you would have noticed that many people were happy with some of the improvements, but felt this was more of an update, rather than a new version... I did read your old post; you made several suggestions that were implemented... Chessmaster now supports multiple processors. It also has several online variants, including Fischer Random Chess. It also includes new tutorials from Josh Waitzkin as well. However, some of your suggestions were not practical, such as re-doing all the tutorials. Your idea of re-recording all the voices to add more "feeling" wasn't realistic, either. This isn't Shakespeare... And while you might be prepared to pay $200.00 for a program that had the features you requested, not everyone would be willing to part with that much money. After all, this is software for the masses... Don't get me wrong. There's several issues to fix, and several improvements that could be made (I really liked your idea of a "User Settings" dialog), but because Chessmaster is a small game in a line of bigger games (that make more money), I wouldn't expect any miracles soon. |

Hey
No offense!!! I am a repeated customer, and know I purchased the game BEFORE IT CAME OUT!!! I preordered it from amazon, and was probably one of the first to have it! Havent been on the forum, since I didnt see a reason. Secondly, I love the game and the program, I thought of buying a better program for a more experienced user, but i thought thats what the point of the grandmaster edition was. Overall i see the improvments, though i wish you got them to sit in the studio and rerecord some more feeling into the game, i know these guys cost a lot to get of thier couch, so i understand that too. Its a good game overall i love it, though i wish they really took my sugestions more seriously, especially the blunder suggestion, where this would happen... (i know its difficult but its just code, like...figure it out!) Upon a Blunder... You dont get that ridicoulous popup and that "why" nonsense, which is very annoying for a chess player to have to click a hundred times a game, instead you would get this... A red light would go on somewhere next to the table, this means you just did a blunder, then when you click on this red light the board would come to life... It would show you the moves on the board and why its a blunder with colors and a spoken explanation... then if you want to see the move list you can click on a button under the red light alert button which is like the current popup. Something of this sort, wouldve been real neat! Anyway, i understand that its a small game in a line of bigger games, i just thought that this "grandmaster" edition was a bit heavier, but i thought wrong, goog game overall though. Thanks Derrick Steven |
