I don't seen to be able to find the selection of avatars to choose from.

The manual is a little outdated... all you get is the standard boy/girl silhouette avatars.
You can create your own avatars and add them. You just need to make sure they're 76 x 97, 24-bit bitmaps. Then go to the Preference menu, choose 'Avatar', select 'Load', and then select your custom avatars from where you saved them.  |
