Hi, Just downloaded Chessmaster 11 and installed it twice. Removed version 10 first, of course. No error messages except user's manual pdf not found. Skipped that. Ubi folder was empty on Program list. Reinstalled, now there's not even an Ubi folder. Searched for Chessmaster, tried to start it and get the error message kernel.dll missing. Reinstallation may solve this problem.

Tech support for Ubi has not worked for me for the last week, when I was trying to retrieve my username and password. Had to create a new account. Please help! How can I fix this AND contact tech support?

Robert

First - don't panic.

Second, you might want to read the following posts:

Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition FAQ

Contacting Ubisoft Technical Support

That being said:

When you install Chessmaster from a download, you need to use WinZip 11 or later to extract the files. That may be why you have an error with the User's Manual.

You might also try installing as an Administrator.

Also, if you're using Windows Vista, a program folder for Ubisoft isn't created. Instead, a shortcut is placed in the Games folder on your Start menu. You can create a program folder manually if you wish, but you should use gu.exe for the shortcut -- if you use chessmaster.exe, the auto-update feature won't be run, and consequently, you won't be able to play online.

Hope this helps! Smile

Hello - I had the exact same problem, running Vista. Installed winzip12, redid, same problem. Finally, uninstalled Download 'Manager', redid by downloading the file manually and then extracting, etc and it worked.

Editorial comment - I spent far more time on the install than I should have (multiple attempts until I found out about the winzip requirement here on the forum) and download manager did not do it for me (on Vista).

I normally cut my losses and ask for a refund when I have such a hassle with an install but I knew the software was great so I stuck it out. And, the software is great!

Hi to anyone that may be of assistance.

In installing Chessmaster XI: Grandmaster Edition, I had real difficulty. Something never exper on any download.

Finally, after countless downloads I managed to
download the program.

Unfortunately, the Chessmaster Ed (main program)
will not load. But all other features work fine.

Now do I uninstall the entire program and reinstall?

This is a bit vague... could you be more specific?

1. Does your computer meet or exceed the minimum system requirements?
2. What OS are you using?
3. What happens when you run (or try to run) Chessmaster?

Hi KHollister,

I have a Dell Inspiron 530.
Window platform: Vista Home Premium Ver. 6.00
Processor: Genuine Intel, Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 3.0GB
CD-ROM/DVD.

Program Chessmaster XI: Grandmaster Edition, is,
without a doubt, one of the most, if not the
most difficult program to install.

After countless attempts, I finally downloaded the program only to meet with further problems.

I am able to access most of the feature, but am unable to access the main chess program,i.e, the
main reason why I purchased the program.

Now do I un-install and re-install the program again.

Any assistance would be welcomed.
Joe

I'm still not sure what you're talking about when you say you can't access the main chess program... are you talking about Training Mode, Ranked Play, Online, or LAN?

I got your thread, but my answer was returned.

I simply wish to play a game of chess with the
computer, but, after installation, all I get is
"Chessmaster Edition not responding."

For the present, I am not concerned with the features, "Training Mode, Ranked Play, on Online, or Lan."

I just want to play chess and, unfortunately, I am unable to do so.

Bear in mind, I purchased this program on August 31, 2008, and all of my downloads failed!

It was just a couple of days ago that my download successed. Was I elated!

But when I attempted to play a game of chess the error msg appeared.

I had no problem with the other features.

Honestly, I seriously believe that the program must be un-installed. A process that I dread.

Would welcome your take.

As always,
Joe

I still don't think we're on the same page...

To play chess with Chessmaster, you have to first select whether you want Training Mode, Ranked Play, Online or LAN. After that, you can start a game with a computer personality.

If you feel the need to remove and re-install, go ahead and do so... it's not hard.

Downloading shouldn't have been such a hassle... if you were using the Download Manager, un-install it and download the file manually; as there are some known problems using it with Vista. For more information, go to the Ubisoft Digital Download Support Center and click on Help downloading your purchase - > Using our Download Manager. Choose option 3, titled 'Windows Vista users READ HERE PLEASE'.

"I am able to access the features burt the main program doesn't work"

doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Now instead of repeating the same thing all over again, why don't you explain what the problem is (I go here, click there, then this appears etc.)

That is if you actually want help.

Hi KHollister,

Followed your suggestions.
Program is running.
In ending, I must state that this program has
taught me a very real lesson. For example,
never go on the cheap;especially, on downloading.
I rather purchase the program in an outlet like Best Buy, etc.!
Sad, but this program "Chessmaster" is so full of bugs that it really makes one cry.
Again, thanks for your assistance.

Well, I'm glad you got things to work.

Personally, since the download is the same price as the hardcopy you can buy at Best Buy, there's no real advantage to buying the download... unless you're extremely impatient.

What bugs are you talking about?
