Last hint: More than 50 years after that picture was taken, he is still very active and he has something against blueberry yogurt
Now this should do it |

That's Korchnoi? I would have never guessed...
![]() |
Yep, thats a very young version of him
To clarify the 2.5 championships: He played two world championship matches with Karpov (1978 and 1981) and a candidates final (also against Karpov) in 1974. Since Fischer later forfeited the 1974 candidates final was de facto a world championship match, it's just that nobody knew it at that time. Like said, Korchnoi lost on all ocassions against Karpov. How about the next pictures? Who are they? Hint for the left picture: Recently they became quite famous. Hint for the picture on the right: They were the first to hold a specific title, albeit it was given to them unofficially. |

Ah, that would be Irina Krush and Anna Zatonskih...
One of the men in the other photo appears to be Emmanuel Lasker; I'm unsure of the other. |

I don't think we will see them so close and with arms around each other so soon
Those are the five original grandmasters: Lasker, Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshall and Tarrasch. The Russian tsar has supposingly pronounced them as "grandmasters" after the 1914 tournamnt in St. Petersburg. Ok here is a rather easy one. Can you name them all? And here is a tougher one. Who is this? Hint: He is a real chess Methusalem (having celebrated his 97th birthday on May 5th). He is the only surviving of the first 27 official grandmasters that were awarded this title in 1950 by FIDE. With exception of Steinitz, he has played (10) or met all world champions in the history of chess (yes, from Lasker onwards). He is one of the few people who has an even score against Capablanca. According to wikipedia, he is still in good health, driving his car, and writing articles for chess magazines. Who is he? |

Yes, there's no love between the two since the Armageddon match...
The elderly GM is Andor Lilienthal (yes, I confess -- I had to look at Wikipedia). |

Hey thats cheating!
Lets see how you get out of this one. Can you name them without wikipedia? Lets see what wikipedia says now |
Chessmaster Moderator![]() |
Well, I don't know them all, but I can name a few...
1a. Vera Menchik 2c. Zhu Chen 2d. Susan Polgar 3b. Anna Ushenina I know I've seen the last picture before; but for the life of me, I can't recall her name. Ebutaljib 1; KHollister 0 |

You got half right. 1st row: Vera Menchik (1927-44), Lyudmila Rudenko (1950-53), Elisabeta Bykova (1953-56, 1958-62), Olga Rubtsova (1956-58) 2nd row: Nona Gaprindashvili (1962-78), Maia Chiburdanidze (1978-91), Xie Jun (1991-96, 1999-2001), Susan Polgar (1996-99) 3rd row: Zhu Chen (2001-2004), Antoaneta Stefanova (2004-2006), Xu Yuhua (2006-20??) Hint for the second picture: The woman in the picture is one of the above listed Women World champions. Which one? (look for the resemblence) |
Chessmaster Moderator![]() |
Okay... it's Elisabeta Bykova.
![]() |
Yep. When I saw it I thought it is Rudenko, but it is Bykova.
This one is fairly easy, but can you name them in right order? How many people do you recognise? |
Chessmaster Moderator![]() |
Well obviously, those are the Polgar sisters... I'm going to say Susan, Judth, and Sofia (excuse me if the spelling is incorrect).
The person at the bottom of the photo looks like a young Viswanathan Anand... I don't recognize anyone else, though. |
![]() |
Yes, those are the Polgar sisters and you ordered them correctly, Susan is the oldest and Judith is the youngest.
You recognize only Anand? Take another look, you should recognise at least three more (there are 3 other world champions on the picture |
Chessmaster Moderator![]() |
Well, the man in the left-hand corner does look like Mikhail Tal... I still don't recognize any of the others.

Standing (from left): Bent L****n, Victor Korchnoi, Garry Kasparov, Bessel Kok (not a chess player but well known in chess circles), Jan Timman, Boris Spassky
Sitting: Mikhail Tal, Joel Lautier, Viswanathan Anand I failed to recognise L****n and Lautier. P.S.: Thats Bent L@rsen. Who are they? |
Chessmaster Moderator![]() |
I recognize Bobby Fischer and Mikhail Tal, but not the other...
I believe the other photo is of Vasily Smyslov. |
![]() |
The third person on the picture is Lev Polugaevsky and that's indeed a very young Vasily Smyslov.
I think you deserve a point here Who are they? And who is this? |
Chessmaster Moderator![]() |
1st photo: Paul Morphy and Johann Lowenthal.
I'm not familiar with the second photo. If we're still talking World Champions, I'd say it's Garry Kasparov; but I can't be sure, since I can't see the boy's trousers... |
![]() |
I didn't recognise him and I still can't believe that it's him. Another hint: Like Polgars he also had the privilieges to analyse and play some fischer-random games with Bobby. I think I have given too many hints now |
Chessmaster Moderator![]() |
Well, I don't know about privileges to play with Bobby Fischer; but I do know that Ivanchuk came extremely close to winning the title, and recently won M-Tel. If that's him, I certainly wouldn't have guessed it...
