Morozevich is on fire again!

If Dortmund is Kramnik's tournament then Biel is definatelly Morozevich's. He already played in Biel in 2003, 2004 and 2006. He won on all occasions way ahead from the rest of the field. He is on a good way to repeat it once more.

After an excellent start, Morozevich's continuation wasn't so excellent. He "neutralised" his early wins by two loses and is on 50% now. Currrently in the lead is Ivanchuk, but things can change quickly as all the playeers are within 1 point.

Tomorrow is the 2nd rest day.

Take a look at Morozevich vs. Vachier-Lagrave. Now that is spectacular chess. First Morozevich outplayed Vachier and was totally winning after 26 moves. But then the time trouble (for both) begun. After using their last seconds to reach new time control at move 40, it looked like Vachier will win easely. But then it became apparent that eventhough Morozevich is hopelesly down material (he was down a rook and a knight Eek) he can still hold the draw because black is boxed in and paralysed. Vachier sacked the knight to get get out of the corner, but it was still a draw. Then some manouvering took place and Vachier picked up white b pawn (which wasn't important for outcome of the game) and here I think Morozevich made a mistake. I think he should have brought his king to f3 or something like that to hide from black rook. Instead he tried to keep his king in the middle of the board, but Vachier slowly pushed him to the corner and forced him to move the bishop from g6, thus allowing the g7 pawn to move. And then white was lost, because the rook was finally free to move around.

Great game by both and a tragedy for Morozevich. First he had a clear win, then being hopelessly down material held a draw, only to lost it at the end.

Clap and bow for both players. There wasn't a minute that was boring, all +330 of them. I don't remember a game where a rook would be hanging for 25 moves and have never been taken, or someone holding a drawn position by being a rook and knight down.

These years winner is Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, the only undefeated player in this tournament. That spectacular game between Morozevich and Lagrave proved to be crucial.
