If you are playing engine-engine matches on the same computer, they usually compete for resources (CPU, Memory, HASH ...)
Would be wonderful if two PC's run two engines individually with dedicated resource. But what a trouble to find null modem cable and connect two computers together! Plus, many laptops today don't even have COM port to connect to. Everything is about USB, Ethernet or Bluetooth today. Would it be sweet to have an universal protocol for two computers to play chess? I am not talking about an Internet chess server, where you have to create/pay for login, all that trouble ...Just two computer, two chess programs of your own --- like Fritz, CM11, or whatever All you need should be to give the computer name (or IP) and the port on both computers and boom, they should communicate and start playing. Any program/driver out there like this? If not, I am going to write my own. |

Both Chessmaster X and Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition allow you to play others over a LAN... no server to log on to! I haven't tried it with a null modem cable, though.
Unfortunately, as with online play, you can only play against those who have the same version as you have. I wish you the best of luck, but my guess is you'll have issues with firewall and anti-virus software blocking ports, etc. |

Can CM11 engine play on Lan with another Cm11 engine?
Even if it can, I am looking for an universal protocol or adapter that allows any UCI, winboard engine talk to each other. Firewall is not an issue because you can always set exceptions ... |

I think not. Chessmaster's online play was designed for human play.

Yes you can! Google for "Winboard_adapter.exe" (18/4/2003) or get it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/142663296/wbna.zip.html I use it to let play it CMX on computer 1 against Rybka on computer 2 (Set one of the players in CMX as Winboard_adapter to make the connection with the other computer: thus it plays on lan without using the built-in function "on lan" of CMX) Example: "winboard_adaptor.ini" on computer 1: remoteip 10.0.0.40 port 16000 [Winboard init params] feature myname="Winboard adaptor v1.0" sigint=0 sigterm=0 analyze=0 setboard=1 feature colors=0 done=1 "winboard_adaptor.ini" on computer 2: remoteip 10.0.0.41 port 16000 [Winboard init params] feature myname="Winboard adaptor v1.0" sigint=0 sigterm=0 analyze=0 setboard=1 feature colors=0 done=1 PS. To integrate Rybka in your CM you can use the polyglot-mod already explained on this forum. ----------------------- Probably I would be the best chess player in the world if I was not blundering so much... |

Cant get this to work..
The Wbna adapter just wont make a move. I turned off all firewall and made sure IP's are correct. Can you give more specifics on configuration and how do I coordinate the starting point of the game between two computers? |

First test the program: Run "winboard_adaptor.exe" on both computers to test the program. Double click on "winboard_adaptor.exe" to run it in test mode... Bad: Good: Setup to import engine example on both computers in CMX: I hope this helps... To start set black in new game on computer 1 or computer 2 on wait and start new game on the other computer with white (it is possible that you need another try to start them). But it will work wonderfully... ----------------------- Probably I would be the best chess player in the world if I was not blundering so much... |
