I can't seem to find a way to turn off the speech in the Academy. Frankly I want to disable ALL sounds, please tell me there's a way. Chess doesn't need stupid sounds...

There isn't any way to turn off the speech in the Academy... as Ebutaljib has hinted, you'll need to disable the sound at the operating system level (I don't know why you'd want to do that... it doesn't make sense to me).

To turn off all the other sounds (commentary, piece sounds, etc.), go to the Preferences menu, choose 'Sounds'. Under the Piece Movement tab, click 'No Sounds'. You'll also want to uncheck all boxes under the Voice and Effects tabs as well.

Note that if you're already in the Academy, the Preferences menu from the Menu bar doesn't have 'Sounds'. You have to right-click elsewhere on the screen to get the pop-up menu for Preferences... you'll see option for 'Sounds' there.

Hope this helps! Smile

I don't think such drastic measures are necessary. Modifying the ini file should do the trick.

Thanks but that kind of sucks.

I like to listen to other stuff while I'm playing and the speech is pretty annoying. I can read the text, I don't need someone to read it for me.

I'm running XP btw...

Then go to the Chessmaster installation folder - probably:

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition\

and open cm.ini file. Under [Settings] change NoAudio=0 to NoAudio=1. This will disable all Chessmaster sounds (hopefully the tutorials too).

Thanks, but I tried that and whenever I launch the game it keeps getting set back to 0. I took a look at the CMDefault.ini file and didn't see anything in there that looked like it applied.

Any other ideas?

My guess is that tutorial speech cannot be disabled... Ubisoft probably spent a lot of money for it, so they want to make sure you use it.

As for the other sounds, go into the Sounds dialog and turn them off.

Hmm, what if you right click and make it as read only file. Of course this will prevent Chessmaster to "remember" any other setting you change within it's interface.

Of course it did, since it prevents Chessmaster to modify the file.

But you should note that this could have some undesirable side effects too Wink
