I just installed chessmaster XI and the 1.01 and 1.02 patches, but I get this error when I try to open the program:

"This application has failed to start because Kernel.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I tried reinstalling and it didn't work. I am running Vista if that helps

I also unzipped the file using winzip and reinstalled and that did not help. I'm logged in as admin.

Did you install the patches manually or via the auto-update feature?

Okay... try running the latest patch again. I know you're logged in as Admin, but make sure you right-click on the file and select 'Run as Administrator'.

How do you try to open the program? (you use the shortcut on your desktop, you run the game from the "games" folder in Start menu, or...)

I've tried everything - I've removed chessmaster and re-install by running "setup.exe" as administrator. I've installed the patch by running as administrator and I still get the message "kernel.dll was not found."

Thats what I thought. You probably moved/copied game.exe somewhere outside the Chessmaster Grandmaster edition folder and tried to run it from there. You have to create a shortcut not move/copy.

Always run gu.exe, not game.exe or chessmaster.exe. That way it will always check if you have the latest patch installed.

Go to the Start Menu, and select 'Computer'. Click on your C:\ drive, and drill down to the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition

From there, run gu.exe.
