I'm just a novice. Played this game in CMX and drew, I would like to know if I (white) could have won from this position:
8/4k3/8/K1Rp4/3P4/2N5/3q4/8 w - - 0 1 Thanks for any analysis. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" (Edmond Burke 1729-1797) |

In my opinion, obviously White can't win in this position.
The white knight is pinned and the d4 pawn is unprotected. In the next move one of them will be captured. Afterward it's a routine to trade the rook with the queen. You can play this position against an engine and you see that black can get a draw very quickly. For example : 1. Kb6 Qxd4 2. Kc6 Qxc5+ 3. Kxc5 d4 4. Kxd4 1/2-1/2 Black can't win either. K and Q against K an R is difficult to win without a precise technique. K and Q against K, R, and N is probably impossible in a great majority of cases. |
