How can I make an icon to replace the default one in Vista?

No, not an Avatar. I prefer a different icon--the old man over the chess pieces that I think was a previous icon for an older version. I have the picture copied from someone here who uses it as an Avatar.

The picture you're referring to was the box art - not the icon - from a previous version of Chessmaster.

At any rate, I don't think you can change the icon in Vista - at least not for the Games folder. If you create a new program folder, you can use whatever icon you wish when you set up a shortcut.

By the way, do you see the 'Go' icon at the top of the forum page? Click on that, and then go to 'Personal Zone -> Profile'. On the profile page there's a link that allows you to edit your profile (including your e-mail address).
