Lot's of interesting chess tournaments going on, from recently finished Challenger match to currently played tournament in Linares and there is plenty more to come. Besides the first Women's Grand Prix tournament in Istanbul, the European championships are about to begin too. And after that Melody Amber tournament will follow.
It's hard to even follow all events at the moment Men started their European championship today in Budva (Montenegro) and women are about to start their Europen women's championship in St. Petersburg (Russia) this Sunday. You can find first round pairings and results (once the games are finished) of the "Men's" European Championship here. |

"Men's" European Championship - 10th round: Results - Standings - Last round pairings Tomorrow is the last round for men. Top is too crowded so I think the medal holders will be decided on tie-breaks played on Wednesday. |

Women European Championship - 10th round: Results - Standings - Last round pairings
Ekaterina Kovalevskaya is leading into the last round. 7 players follow her, half a point behind. Like in "Men's" championship there will be rapid tie-breaks for the medals and qualifying spots, if necesary. First 14 qualify for the 2010 Women's World Championship (see regulations). |

Tatiana Kosintseva won the match against Lilit Mkrtchian to take the gold medal. Natalija Pogonina won the tie-breaks for bronze. Looks like 18 players (instead of 14) qualify for the next Women World Championship because only Mariya Muzychuk and Irina Vasilevich played off (Muzychuk won). So the following players qualify for the 2010 Women World Championship: Tatiana Kosintseva, Lilit Mkrtchian, Natalija Pogonina, Maia Lomineishvili, Monika Socko, Evgenija Ovod, Ekaterina Kovalskaya, Tatiana Shadrina, Iweta Rajlich, Hoang Thanh Trang, Marina Romanko, Baira Kovanova, Irina Turova, Elisabeth Paehtz, Jolanta Zawadka, Sopiko Khukhashvili, Anna Muzychuk and Mariya Muzychuk. Medal winners: Lilit Mkrtchian (silver), Tatiana Kosintseva (gold), Natalija Pogonina (bronze) This message has been edited. Last edited by: ebutaljib, |

Mystery solved! 4 players (Mkrtchian, Pogonina, Lomineishvili and Anna Muzychuk) were already qualified from the 2008 championship. 14 players qualified from 2008 championship and 14 qualified from this championship. Same with men, 23 qualified for 2009 World Cup from last year's championship and 23 qualified from this year's championship. |

The court rules that the results are null and void!!!
http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=5385 Tatiana Kosintseva and Evgeny Tomashevsky did NOT win the European championship, and other players did NOT qualify for Women World Championship or World Cup. They played just for fun Also the 2009 European Club Cup (men and women) and 2009 European Youth Championship are cancelled. This message has been edited. Last edited by: ebutaljib, |
