To answer your first question, online play for CM 11 requires that everyone involved have CM 11. And CM 10 won't work with CM 11 online play, either (they use different protocols). There are several CM 11 servers, with each handling up to 500 players at one time. Your second question is quite a poser. I've seen as many as 35 people on the server at once, and as little as one (myself). It's not nearly as popular as some others (there were 1681 users on playchess when I logged in yesterday). If you've read through the some of the messages on the forum, you'll notice that there are still some glitches -- while some people have problems, others don't. So consider it carefully before you spend your hard-earned money. If you play online a lot, you may want to wait a bit. Hope this helps...

No. You can only connect to the Chessmaster servers.

I think its not a bad idea to buy chessmaster anyway because you get the other extra good features such as learning books and academy and as well as playing hundreds of computer opponents. The chessmaster online has between 5 to 20 people everyday and if you do login you will always find atleast one person to play against.

Chessmaster will connect to the first available server (also called a lobby). Each lobby accomodates up to 500 players. In the case where more than one lobby is currently in use, you can switch between lobbies, using the 'Change Lobby' option from the Online Settings menu.

It may take some programming but it's bound to be possible.
It would probably be good if we could leave it logged into the game servers while going and playing computer opponents and using the rest of the game. At least that way you can do other things while you wait for others to get on - it may help improve the servers. From what I can tell, it seems like you either have to leave open the lobby and not use the game and just wait for others to get on (who knows how long that will be), or not be in the lobby (thus the next person to log in will miss you). Wouldn't be too much on the PC to be able to leave the lobby open.
At least in the meantime I have a bunch of computer opponents to play. I just got into chess so most people online can probably beat me anyways. I mainly got this because I heard it was much better than the DS version which I own...definitely true. Much much more tutorials.
I absolutely agree with this idea of yours being seen online whilst playing computer opponents I wished that was implemented. I also agree that CM servers have to be put on one like cm 10 to play vs cm xi that way population will grow bigger.
