Are You Happy With The Online Service of Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition? I just want to know how you rate it. Compared to Free and Non Free Online Chess Services such as below. In the case of Chessmaster 10th edition, has it gotten better or worst?

Compared to these:

Chessbase's Playchess

Chess Assistant's ChessOK

The Free Internet Chess Server (FICS)

ChessClub.com's ICC

Chessmaster 10th Edition

Question:
Are You Happy With The Online Service of CMXI

Choices:
Happy
Un-Happy
Undecided
Don't Use

The game is fine but the service and support are horrible.
I purchased the game online and never recieved a key to play online.
Going through the ticket support arena i was told that is an issue they are working on.
It would have been nice to know something like that up front.
The main purpose for buying was the online play.

The problem is that the community is too small.
If server for CM10th and CM11th will be the same it should be better.

Please god give me, the strength to lead, make the sorrow, the fuel I need.

Hi Chessou,

I agree the community is small, however small can also be a good thing. In the case of Chessmaster as far as online play goes it is small because the service is not good. The problems with joining games or challenging other players that are displayed don't help either. Before that CMX online had a problem with screwed up ratings. I also don't think the CD key checks help matters either. Once when connecting to the service should be enough for CD Key checks, but for each game played it is overkill and overhead that slows down the service. Of course by CD key checks I mean product key number verifications, since the real CD/DVD is not required to play online.

I, like yourself wish that the communities of CMX and CMXI were joined. However it has been stated somewhere on this forum that they cannot be joined because of a change in the protocols that the new CMXI uses. If this is true, so far the change in protocols has made the online experience worst than it was before.

When you think about it, what makes a good online chess service is the number of games, the number players and the quality of your online connection. To many players means server overload, too few means no or fews games for the players. The problem Chessmaster XI has is it does not handle the few (10 Max that I've seen) players that it has very well at all, from connection problems to board display problems. Its all there and does not make for a good online chess experience.

From the list posted above I would say Chessmaster GM Edition is the worst of all online chess services. I think even CMX will give a better online experience as far as things stand as of right now. Maybe a patch will fix this. If so the question becomes when will the patch be delivered.

With the exception of the Chessmaster series, all of the other chess servers listed above host 800 plus chess players everyday. Chessmaster really needs to pick up it's game as far as online chess goes.

1)make sure you have downloaded and installed the patch.
2)make sure you have mcAfee, norton, zonealarm etc. turned off (not only disabled, turned off.)
3)if the problem continues, check out the readme file for configuring your ports.

Hello Toni_2pies,
Can you tell me when the problem occurs? When you enter the online? Or when you try to connect to a game?

I'm "undecided" with my feelings re: online play. I think it works just fine but I wish that there were more players. They should really consider joining the X & XI Communities.

For those with a firewall:
Pg 31 of the manual: "Configuring The Network" states that one should open the following ports:
TCP: 668, 40000-42999
UDP: 41006, 44000, 45000, 45001, 17110

I agree with you yankee, I mean this really rocks in comparison with every single free online chess games, better than pogo.com, zone.com, yahoo, playchess.com its just that it lacks players unlike those site they have thousands of online players. playchess.com is a pay site 29 euros a year to play online but it sucks because it doesn't have 3d board, it does have a 3d but its **** and you can't choose chess sets and animated ones.

Still not happy since the patch (1.02) has not fixed the online problems. See related post:

I would like to create a game that doesn't ask me what color I want to play in. for me its the same, so I would like a 'whatever' choice in the drop down.
Alsa the community is too small, it takes forever to get a game going.
