I have saved several rated-play games but can't load them. When I use the files menu and select Load, as directed by the manual, I am given only adjourned games to choose from. What have I overlooked?

You can only load adjourned rated games in Ranked Play mode.

When you want to stop a rated game and come back to it later, you must adjourn it first, by selecting 'Adjourn' from the Actions menu.

Hope this helps! Smile

When you're playing a computer personality, some actions (such as taking back a move) will cause it to stop thinking. 'Wake Up!' will start the computer thinking again.

  • Copy PGN - it copies the current game in PGN format so you can import it in another program. It will ask you if you would like to copy annotations (3 choices) or not.

    Example:

    [Event ""]
    [Site "Rome"]
    [Date "1619"]
    [Round ""]
    [White "Gioachino Greco"]
    [Black "Unknown"]
    [TimeControl "-"]
    [Result "1-0"]
    [ECO " "]

    1.e4 b6 2.d4 Bb7 3.Bd3 f5 4.exf5 Bxg2 5.Qh5+ g6 6.fxg6 Nf6 7.gxh7+ Nxh5 8.Bg6# 1-0

  • Copy Move List - is almost the same as PGN except that it is easier to read for a human.

    Example:

    [Event ""]
    [Site "Rome"]
    [Date "1619"]
    [Round ""]
    [White "Gioachino Greco"]
    [Black "Unknown"]
    [Result "1-0"]
    [ECO " "]

    1. e4 b6
    2. d4 Bb7
    3. Bd3 f5
    4. exf5 Bxg2
    5. Qh5+ g6
    6. fxg6 Nf6
    7. gxh7+ Nxh5
    8. Bg6# 1-0

  • Copy Move List/w Tabs - is the same as copy move list except that the tabs are added.

    Example:

    [Event ""]
    [Site "Rome"]
    [Date "1619"]
    [Round ""]
    [White "Gioachino Greco"]
    [Black "Unknown"]
    [Result "1-0"]
    [ECO " "]

    1. e4 b6
    2. d4 Bb7
    3. Bd3 f5
    4. exf5 Bxg2
    5. Qh5+ g6
    6. fxg6 Nf6
    7. gxh7+ Nxh5
    8. Bg6# 1-0

(seems like this forum doesn't recognise the tabs)

  • Copy Forsythe Board Position - this is standard format for saving a position. You use this if you only want to export/import a particular position and not the whole game. A position that is currently on the board will be copied.

    Two examples:

    Starting position:
    rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1

    Mating position:
    rn1qkb1r/p1ppp2P/1p4B1/7n/3P4/8/PPP2PbP/RNB1K1NR b KQkq - 0 8

  • Copy ASCII position - it copies the current position in ASCII charaters. It only works in plain text (paste this into notepad). In Word or here it gets distorted and looks like this:

    The mating position:

BR BN -- BQ BK BB -- BR
BP -- BP BP BP -- -- WP
    -- BP -- -- -- -- WB --
    -- -- -- -- -- -- -- BN
    -- -- -- WP -- -- -- --
    -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
WP WP WP -- -- WP BB WP
WR WN WB -- WK -- WN WR

  • Copy Board position with Chess Font - it copies the current position and makes a diagram of the board (with little chess pieces). If you copy it into some text editor make sure you select the ChessmasterX font otherwise it will look like this:

    §ËœÅ¹Å»Å‚ąŹ¨
    ƒŹƒźƒŹý
    ŹƒŹŹ"ºÂ
    ŹŹŹ"”
    ʐŹ˙ʐʐ
    ŹŹŹŹ
    ýË™ýŹ˙ž˙
    ¦"¢Å¥Å¹Ë›Å¹–¤

On some computers this doesn't work (the position is always scrambled). Probably because of the regional settings or it is just a bug.

  • Copy Graphical Windows Content - I think it should make a screenshot, but I always only get a blank (black) picture or only the wallpaper without the board or any of the windows.

Copy PGN (or copy Move List if you like that format more) and Copy Forsythe Board Position is all you really need.

Well, what part you don't understand? It's as KHollister said; If you take back the moves the computer stops calculating. With "Wake up" command you wake him up so that it starts calculating again.

There is just no other way to explain it.

As ebutaljib says, "Force Move" makes the computer opponent move instantly. "Wake Up" means the computer starts thinking (if it wasn't already).

Think of it as telling the computer "It's your turn to move". The computer will then consider the amount of time left on the clock and make a move appropriately based on that time.

Wow... you're asking some tough questions. Smile

From what I can tell Key Mode is used to filter the Game List -- it will display all the games that have gone out of opening book after the current position in the game you're currently reviewing.

To quote the User Manual (from CM 9000):
    quote:
Select Key Mode in the Preferences drop-down menu to view the games that have gone out of the opening book after the selected position. The Game List window updates to reflect the corresponding games.

That being said, I still couldn't figure out how to get this working. Perhaps this option is no longer valid? Confused

Hopefully someone else can shed some light on this...

    It works on my computer.

If you move through the Key tree (under "key info" tab) the games get filtered (under "Moves" tab) while in Key Mode. As stated, the games where one of the players leaves the opening book are listed.

    For example:
Go to the database and enable "Key Mode". Go to the "Key Info" tab and select the desired opening in the opening tree. In my exmple I selected the following Symetrical English opening 1.c4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 g6

In the status bar at the bottom it will display how many games did it find. In my example it found 7 games from 783953 games. Meaning that in those 7 games the players played something else than 4.Bg2 which is the only book move in this position.

Now go to the "Moves" tab where those 7 games are listed. If you select those games you will see that after 1.c4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 g6 something other than 4.Bg2 was played.

If you adding pieces of a certain type to the board (i.e., a Queen), the + just de-selects the type of piece, so you can select any of the pieces on the board and move them around.

To quote the manual (Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition):
    quote:
To move a piece to another position on the board, select the + icon
from the window, then click on the piece on the board, then on the
    target square.

I must confess I'm not familiar with all of the icons (Plus signs, asterisks, red and yellow diamonds), but many of them refer to the active status of the player:

    • Pawn - currently playing
    • Eye - observing a game
    • Smiley - Buddy List
    • Forbidden sign - Ignore List

From the ReadMe.txt file that you can find in Chessmaster's installation folder:

    15.
    The Global Reward System

The Online play contains a hidden reward system based on the GRP - the global reward points. To put it simply, each game offer players reward points; new game modes or add-ons to the personal profile are unlocked according to the number of points gained.
The amount of reward points gained by playing is as follows:

    Unrated Games
    - defeat: 1 point
    - draw against a weaker player, rating difference >200: 1 point
    - draw against a weaker player, rating difference (50,200): 1 point
    - draw against a weaker player, rating difference (0,50): 1 points
    - draw against a stronger player, rating difference (0,50): 1 points
    - draw against a stronger player, rating difference (50,200): 2 points
    - draw against a stronger player, rating difference >200: 2 points
    - victory against a weaker player, rating difference >200: 2 points
    - victory against a weaker player, rating difference (50,200): 3 points
    - victory against a weaker player, rating difference (0,50): 3 points
    - victory against a stronger player, rating difference (0,50): 4 points
    - victory against a stronger player, rating difference (50,200): 5 points
    - victory against a stronger player, rating difference >200: 7 points

    Rated Games:
    - defeat: 1 point
    - draw against a weaker player, rating difference >200: 1 point
    - draw against a weaker player, rating difference (50,200): 1 point
    - draw against a weaker player, rating difference (0,50): 3 points
    - draw against a stronger player, rating difference (0,50): 3 points
    - draw against a stronger player, rating difference (50,200): 5 points
    - draw against a stronger player, rating difference >200: 7 points
    - victory against a weaker player, rating difference >200: 5 points
    - victory against a weaker player, rating difference (50,200): 7 points
    - victory against a weaker player, rating difference (0,50): 9 points
    - victory against a stronger player, rating difference (0,50): 10 points
    - victory against a stronger player, rating difference (50,200): 12 points
    - victory against a stronger player, rating difference >200: 15 points

    Simultaneous Exhibitions:
The games are considered rated and the host receives a double reward for each draw or victory.

    Clan Membership:
Joining a clan gives 5 reward points.
Being the clan founder gives 5 reward points.
Being the clan champion (best player) gives 2 reward points at any time (if a player falls back then returns to the top it gets the 2 points again)

To prevent cheating, a player can't create more than one clan every week.

The amount of points needed to advance a star (there are four star shapes and three colors for each shape; the stars are visible in the Player List, next to the player's name):
20 points initial increment increasing by 15 for each level (so you can get a star at 20, 55, 105, 160, 225, 300, etc)

The amount of points needed to increase in title (titles are visible in the player's profile):
    10 points initial increment increasing by 10 for each level (so you can get a title at 10, 30, 60, 100, 150, 210, 280, 360, 450, 550, etc). Max title obtained at 2320 points.
