I've searched the forums for this, but can't find information on whether playing on a 2D set or a 3D set on the computer would be more beneficial. Is it better to play on 2D? I thought it might be better if the board looked more like a real board, but I was doing well in 2D the tutorials, but when I went to game play, I switched to 3D and found I missed a lot of things visually. Can people relate their experiences or impressions and reasons why one is better or worse than another?
I think you could ask 10 people about this, and get 10 different answers.
There's no absolute answer for this... different people think differently, so 2D might work for one player, but not another. The same thing goes for 3D.
Personally, I like 3D sets better than 2D sets, because I occasionally I play on a real set, and I think it helps me to keep the same visual perspective all the time. However, if a move is a bit of a poser, I'll look at it in 2D just to make sure I didn't miss something.
As KHollister has said, you'll get many different answers.
Personally I prefer to play on a 3D board even though it kills my laptop (integrated graphics i.e. no card) as I'm much more used to playing on a real board. I find that I spot more interesting moves on a 3D board and often miss simple diagonals when playing on a 2D board. I think you're just gonna have to play with both and decide for yourself.
In the end you can chose which one and go with it and be ok. We learn all things one way...Repetition. So basically you will eventually get used to whichever you chose.
I've always been used to 3d myself, but then I never played 2d. I would suggest getting used to 3d so it won't feel odd if you go from 2d on the computer to 3d on a real chess board. But honestly that's just opinion. Besides I absolutely suck at chess so take my advice at your own peril!
Sometimes i replay my games when i am in my dream;i can't finish the game if i have played with a 3d board before. Often change of boards is not very good i think. So its just my opinion.
The difference between playing 3D on a chess program and in "real life" is that you move your head around to see different angles on the board in a real game.
I generally play in 3D (tilted quite far), then go to a 2D board for analysis.
Whatever works for you. I don't think that playing in 2D is going to hinder your playing in a "real game" at all.
The idea of having a 3D chessboard is it gives a realism to the game on a glance. But, when you pan your head from left and right, back and forth... it can become confusing because the 3D image of the square chessboard remains the same trapezoid image.
On 2D chessboard, the squares remain square and varies as you pan your head.
So for me, I prefer the 2D board because it is much real to me. And most of the tutorial books have 2D graphics.
2D is better for me. I find it quite uncomfortable to play on a 3D board. Something funny about it, is that if you didn't position it quite well, the pieces in the front can be somehow obscured. 2D forever!!
By the way, despite all the bugs that we find in this edition, the engine is quite strong, I am impressed. I have played a couple of games against Fritz 8 and Fritx 10. CM stands its grounds well.
