1. Tell us the make/model of your video card.
It is a ATi Mobility Radeon X1300. 2. Pictures of the following Control Panel items would be helpful: a. System Properties (System) b. Regional and Language Options, Advanced (Regional and Language Options, Advanced tab) c. Display Properties, Settings (Display, Settings tab) 3. Make sure you have the latest video card drivers and Windows updates installed, including SP2 (This might not help, but it wouldn't hurt, either). I am downloading and installing the update from Lenovo. 4. You mentioned that you created a new user and tried to install as administrator... what was the User Name? The name was Chessmaster 5. What is the other language you frequently use? I use Chinese. Sorry for the late response but it was quarter end. Busy and tired........ Thanks guys! I will get the pictures as soon as possible. |

I am using a DVD so I do not think that is the problem. But you DO provided a good hint. How do you type the registered symbol into the file name? It seems that my Windows system is having some problem recognizing it. |

Having seen the screenshots, it looks like you have everything set up correctly.
Under the Language tab of Regional and Language Options, try un-checking the box 'Install files for East Asian languages', then try installing again. If that goes okay, then you can check that box again. I'm not sure if that will help, but it's worth a try... |

As thyost figured out, it's probably the ® character in the name of the pdf file that is causing this.
Go to your DVD drive and see if the name of the pdf file is Chessmaster® Grandmaster Edition Manual.pdf It's in the Support/Manual folder. In your third screenshot scrool down in the "code page conversion tables" and check everything where it says english. Perhaps you will have to check the "Apply all settings to the current user account..." too. |

Umm, why does it say CD? Do you have a DVD-drive or just a CD drive?
(although I'm not sure if you could be able to see any data if you put a DVD into a CD drive) |

I am using a combo, which is able to read DVD but record only CD.

Ok, what if you copy the whole thing to your hard drive and then install the game from there?
Also does the installation fail immediatelly or in the middle or in the end? |

I copied the whole folder to my hard drive but still it does not work.
The installation cannot even start. It shows "Verifying installation" and then the error message pop up. After I close the error message, it just says that the installation is interrupted and my system is not modified. I highly suspect the registered mark might be linked to something else in my registry. I did tried to clean my registry and this action actually made my laptop unable to function and I had to go back to safe mode to recover the registry. I tried to search for Chessmaster in the registry for a solution but I have not find anything that can fix the problem. I even tried to modify the window installer file in the installation folder. It does contain a link to the manual with that circle R symbol. I tried to open it with notepad, changed the link, i.e., deleted the circle R, and saved it. But then I found I could not even start the installation. I might need a visual studio or some IDE to recode the installer file, i.e Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition.msi I also went to Google and found that specifically for chessmaster XI, only few of people are suffering from this error. But this problem occurred to some installation of office software. They were all related to registry problem. Still I am not sure if I as a programming amateur can solve this problem and I am not even sure the registry or the msi file is the problem. |

You better try contacting the support. They are probably the only ones that can help you.

I don't know if you followed the step correctly but I had exactly same error occured when installing. I, also, have used English setup as a second language but end up installing CMXI successfully
you've got to uninstall CMXI from your old acc before re-installing on new acc. This should no longer be a problem since my primary language is Asian too but succeeded in installation. |

This was something different. He did try the workaround you mentioned (this is now in the Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition FAQ), but it didn't help.
He was able to get things working, but it involved modifying the executable with a hex editor -- something that's not recommended except in dire cases. It's definitely not supported... |

Wow.. nvm then..
I thought my case was the one that frustrates people most, but he is even worse off then... hope he finds a way to install |

Yeah thanks very much guys!
It's tricky but I finally find a way to make it work. I am a starter of chess but I learned a lot. I am starting to enjoy the game!! |

I have installed the game several times. The actual installation is no problem. But, no icons are created in the start menu, on the desktop, neither is a folder created for Ubisoft or Chessmaster in the start menu.

I was continuing to browse and just saw that thread. I followed instructions and now have an icon in the games tab. Thanks.
Also, how do I create a signature for these posts? I've tried updating my profile, but there is no spot for that. Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace. -- Buddha (560-483 B.C.) |
