When I tried to install the game, the installation was interrupted by an error message, saying "Error 1324 The path Chessmaster?Grandmaster Edition Manual.pdf contains an invalid character". I am using an English version of Windows XP and the language has been set to English(USA). I once installed Chessmaster Challenge but I had uninstalled it long time ago. Does anyone know a solution? I got my copy from Amazon, so I do not expect this problem to happen......

Thanks for help from anyone.

So you're using an English version of Windows, and you have it set to English. Do you normally use another language? If so, does your user name have any non-English characters? If so, that's your problem.

There's a workaround for this in the Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition FAQ.

Hope this helps! Smile

Thank you very much for the instant answer.

Yet the problem is still there.
I do use another language very often. However my user name is in English. Just now I tried to create a brand new user account as an administrator in Windows XP but Chessmater even could not be installed there. I also tried safe mode but that does not work either.

Can you offer more help please? Thank you!!

Unfortunately, I'm out of ideas at this point. Frown

Please contact Ubisoft Technical Support. They should be able to help you with this.

How did you change the language to English? Changing the language in the Taskbar does nothing. Did you do this?

Control panel -> language and time -> advance -> change your language to Eng

(can someone say what this option is about, what does it say. Does it mention Non-unicode characters. I don't have XP and in Vista it's a little bit different.)

Please tell me what this option in "Control panel -> language and time -> advance" does. What does it say about this option?

I am sorry but I do not have a item called language and time on my control panel. Rather, I have Regional and Language Options. I opened that, went to advanced, and that it said English(United States). The technical support replied my message, saying that I was using a laptop and that's the reason why I was not able to install.............

I am so disappointed.........

This sounds like another case of mediocre Technical Support... Angry Blue Guy

Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition may not work on the laptop versions of some video cards (see the System Requirements); but that wouldn't prevent you from installing the program.

I know you've already tried the work-around in the Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition FAQ; could you please repeat this? Make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.

Also, please PM me with the response Tech Support sent you.

Thanks,

KHollister

How can you expect help if you don't answer one simple question?

What does it say before all the languages are listed?

Surely it's not just a list of languages without any explanation what this setting is about.

I am sorry but I do not think I really understand your question.

Again, I am not sure about where the "language and time" option is. I only have a "Regional and Language Options". When I go into advanced, it says:
Language for non-Unicode programs
This system setting enables non-Unicode programs to display menus and dialogs in their native language. It does not affect Unicode programs, but it does apply to all users of this computer.

Then it has a list of languages.
Below that it shows a list of Code page conversion tables which says:
10001(MAC-Japanese).......

And it has Default user settings to the current and to the default user profile. I tried to check that box, but it does not work.

There seems to be some miscommunication... Could you post a picture of this?

Also, what's the make of your video card?

Yes, thats what I wanted to know (to see if it's even a right setting).

So you set it to English (United states) and it still doesn't work. Is there only one option for English (United states) or are there several of them?

Ok then I'm officially out of suggestions.

Just a stupid question in the end: You don't happen to use the French version of chessmaster, do you?

No, but more importantly it is recognized by FIDE and Ubisoft, so I am admited to play chess with Chessmaster Too Happy

I still have nagging feeling that something is being overlooked here... Frown

Tech Support said the problem was because he was using a laptop; as I've said before, this might prevent running the game (depending on the video card), but it wouldn't prevent installation of the game. (By the way, I use a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 and it installed fine and runs perfectly).

Please do the following:

1. Tell us the make/model of your video card.
2. Pictures of the following Control Panel items would be helpful:

a. System Properties (System)
b. Regional and Language Options, Advanced (Regional and Language Options, Advanced tab)
c. Display Properties, Settings (Display, Settings tab)

3. Make sure you have the latest video card drivers and Windows updates installed, including SP2 (This might not help, but it wouldn't hurt, either).

4. You mentioned that you created a new user and tried to install as administrator... what was the User Name?

5. What is the other language you frequently use?

Sorry to be so verbose, but it's a shame to spend $40 on a program and not be able to at least install it...

I received the same error message when installing Chessmaster obtained via download from Ubisoft - the install wizard said the file "Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition Manual.pdf" could not be found. When I looked further it had to do with the reigstered symbol after the work Chessmaster in the file name (®). Somewhere in the download winzip eliminated the character when I extracted the files. I simply went into the download directory and added the symbol into the title name and had the install wizard retry the install and all worked fine. Not sure if this is the same as your problem.

What version of WinZip were you using? Version 11 (as recommended in the Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition FAQ) shouldn't have this problem.
