Having been a long-time fan of Chessmaster 9000, I am now considering the updated version for my new computer with Windows Vista. As much as I enjoyed the graphis of Chessmaster 9000p, one of my disappointments was there weren't more varied chess set options. And since that info or listing isn't included for Chessmaster 11, I was wondering what they might be. When I bought Chessmaster 9000, I was hoping to perhaps see an American Civil War Chess set, American Revolutionary War Chess Set, a Napolean Chess Set, a Roman Empire Chess set etc. I see you can create new chess sets, but I only see variations of the classic and Stauton variety. Any thoughts?

You're right, most of them are of the variations on Staunton and classic sets.

Most of the new sets in Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition are digital replicas from those found at the The House of Staunton. There are also a few -- but not many -- animated 3D sets, such as the Rayman Raving Rabbids. However, they're not close to the old "Battle Chess" by Interplay (just in case you're wondering).

There are instructions on how you can create your own 2D sets; however, you can't create your own 3D sets.

We've had several people ask for new sets. Unfortunately, some of the requests have been, well... very disturbing. However, most of the requests have been for historical sets like you're asking for.

Despite the lack of these sets, I would recommend the latest version of Chessmaster; personally, I think the updated version of TheKing and correspondence chess are well worth the price... but check out the New Features and decide for yourself. Smile

Thanks a million.

Glad to hear there have been other inquiries about Classic Battle Chess Sets. Maybe that will plant the seed in the right people's garden.

Mr. Moderator, I took your advice and just finished installing Chessmaster Grandmaster and I couldn't be more pleased short of seeing the period piece sets like Civil War, etc. that I inquired about. The three animated sets are fantastic, and I appreciate greatly the expansion of choices in the other asvailable chess sets. Looking forwartd to many enjoyable hours with this game. Thanka.

I'm glad to hear you're pleased. Smile

Make sure that you check the Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition Downloads for updates, opening books and photos, and PGN files of the tournaments we've been covering.

Have fun!
