Just had to post this. I'm a novice player. Although I've known how to move the pieces for a couple or three decades I never explored anything else. And I've probably played 3 games of chess since the 80's.
Needless to say I've learned a lot from the Grandmaster tutorials. It's been fun. I recently started playing ranked games, not online, just to get that out of the way. Usually I hover around beating the oponents that are ranked in the 700's and losing to the opponents in the 900's. Last night though I accidentally beat a few in a row and got 'suggested' an 1100ish ranked opponent. It wound up being my first 'real' game. Pretty balanced, couple mistakes, one or two recoveries, and a nice long end game that was pretty even for a bit. I was able to get my king active first and I think that's the main reason I won. So anyway, it was a great game. Of course now my next suggested opponent is around 1200 or higher, so time for me to go get my butt handed to me |

Update:
The suggested opponent was ranked 1242. I didn't get beat as easily as I thought I would. My first major mistakes happened during the endgame when my time was running out. And here I thought 30 minutes would be way more than I ever needed!
