I got the following error when installing Chessmaster Grandmaster after downloading. I know it's just the PDF user manual, but was wondering why it wasn't part of the package and where I could get it.

"Error 1308. Source file not found: H:\Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition\Support\Manual\Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition Manual.pdf. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it."

I'm going to talk to some people to get the file put on the ftp site; in the meantime, contact Ubisoft Technical Support. They should be able to e-mail you the PDF file.

Turns out the PDF is actually there in
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition so not sure what's up with the error.

The shortcut in the Start menu to the documentation didn't work though. I just created a new one and deleted the old one so all is now fine.

May want to investigate the install script.

I got the same problem with the PDF, and it was solved using winzip 11 to unpack. I was using winrar and there was a special character on the file name that was interpreted incorrectly.

But it looks that after the instalation ends, it hangs, because the shortcuts on the init menu where not saved (i had to create them manually) and i also select to register and never apeared any windows where a can register.

Help me please! I can't update my chessmaster.
It only occured when updated to 1.02.
Someone told me the reason was that the manual file "Chessmaster® Grandmaster Edition Manual.pdf" contained a invalid character "®". Adobe Reader or my system can't recognise it.
Is that true?
How to fix it?

Okay... I saw your error message, but are you sure the file is missing?

Look in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition for the file. Is it there?

If so, load Chessmaster, go to the Help Menu, and select 'Contents'. If the PDF file comes up, then you received a bogus error message. The most you might have to do is to manually create a shortcut, as rosebudcassidy said.

Go to menu "Help--About Chessmaster Grandmaster edition" and see if it says version 1.2.0 or not.

If it does the game is patched. Neither of the patches changed anything in the manual.

I have the manual file "Chessmaster® Grandmaster Edition Manual.pdf" in the folder where my chessmaster was installed.
The error information is "Cannot create the following file: F:\Chessmaster?Grandmaster Edition Manual.$$A"

Okay... go to the Help Menu, select 'About Chessmaster', and see what the version number is. It should say 1.2.0.

Next, select 'Contents' from the Help menu... does the PDF file come up in Adobe Reader?

Did you use automatic update?

If so, try manually installing the update. Go to the Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition Downloads, and download the 1.02 update.

If you're using Windows Vista, make sure you install it as an administrator (right-click on the file and select 'Run as Administrator').

This probably hapens because the system language is different than english so the character ® isn't decoded properly.

Try changing the language to english.

I have tried to install the update manually at least 100 times. The error occurred as usual.
Besides, I can't open the manual via Help>>Contents. This way can startup adobe reader, but adobe reader tell me there are something wrong about file name, directory or volume name.
But I'm sure the manual is already there, and I can double click it to open.

Thank you! I think maybe you are right. But the most important problem is how to change the language to english.
I am afraid I can't buy a new Windows XP which language is English or other European language.
In fact, I am in china.

Since the 1.1.0 patch installed without a problem (and the manual was updated by that patch) I suggest you copy the original manual from the CD and then run the 1.2.0 patch.

If it doesn't help download this manual
http://rapidshare.com/files/94855574/Manual.zip.html

This is already updated manual, so perhaps the patch will leave it alone (not likely).

The first option is the way to go.

I forgot how its done in Windows XP and I'm not sure if it's that easy to get different language packs. With Vista Ultimate is very easy, you just download the language pack via windows update and change the language in control panel.

I found that the manual didn't update after 1.01 patch (the other updated files was shown but it was not shown). But I don't mean you are wrong. Maybe the reason is same.

OK, thank you all the same. I'll try to get an English operating system because I have know that there was nothing happened on English operating system. It's my last hope.

Though I know I am a few months behind...
My PC is running Traditonal Chinese Windows XP SP2
I am also experiencing this update error.
I think non-english OS might need a modified update patch that will help us in solving this problem.
There might be some ways to do it
1. Make the update ignore the help file
2. Rename the help file and address the path to new filename
3. Make the update read the filename with that "®" sign

I persoanlly believe the first option is the best, if I want to read the manual, I can simply rename it without that "®" and I can open the file with no problem at all. Can we have development team help on this? I afraid I am unlikely to purchase another copy of Windows just for a game. Thanks.

Have you tried the suggestions in the Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition FAQ?

Also, have you tried submitting a ticket to Ubisoft Technical Support?

As to your suggestions, they're not practical... the updates include changes to the Help file.
