I must say I was a little disappointed with this book.
1. Rowling said 7 years at Hogwarts, but Harry doesn't go there for his 7th year.
2. The rvelation of Snape's true allegiance. Could have been done a LOT better. There was no suspense when that happened.
3. Got very boring when the trio was doing nothing but moving around Britain for about 100 pages.
4. The epilogue was absolute ****. We didn't find out diddly squat about the characters. We only found out who hooked up and got kids.
5. Too many unanswered questions.

Otherwise a good book wich was mostly thrilling to read.

- For the reccord, Just the last 9 days I've read 5 books. Four of them fantasy if you count Harry Potter in there, and the rest of them "grown up" books. All of them are good, but each in it's own way. The other ones I like because of the complicated plot, universe and good writing. The Potter ones I like because of the simplicity and childish universe. A bit for everything.- The fifth book is by the way Max Weber on politics and economy Happy

You could read E.A.Poe for a better taste instead.. Wink

You could do worse than try some Terry Pratchett or if you prefer science fiction try Larry Niven. Smile

I found some Terry Pratchet in San Francisco, but I allready had 14 books by then, so I quite simply didn't have any room for him Sad Eyes

Got myself George R.R. Martin though, and have ordered the rest of the Song of Ice and Fire series... Although I now learn that he hasn't finisshed them yet, so a new Harry Potter waiting book for me Angry Blue Guy

Fantasy or generally?

Will take some time to find out all the old books, but the last months the fantasy ones have been: Stephen King (The Dark Tower series and a few that aren't fantasy), George R.R. Martin (First two books in a Song of Ice and Fire), David Eddings (The Belgariath), Tolkien (Children of Húrin) and some science fiction ones, like Dune and re-read Douglas Adam's books.

I meant fantasy mainly...

The dark tower series is great actually.
Have you read The eyes of the dragon? One of the only S.King books thats actual fantasy. Youll see one bad guy in there youll recall Wink

Have you by any chance read S. Donaldson. (really nice and a hero that is actually human in all respects and not just totally absurd), R.E. Feist? (many many good series... 17 brick-like books there Wink ) R.A. Salvatore? (His stories of Drizzt and Caderly being the most known I take it) Terry Brooks? (his Magic Kingdom of Landover-series is great Its a bit akin to Pratchet), Robert Rankin? (Crazy guy, lots of laughs)... Sate-hen. The half-man, half-chicken destined to take over the world for instance...

I think I've read some of R.A. Salvatore's, The Crystal something, but otherwise the book selection in the Faroes is pretty poor... We've got Danish and Faroese author's in abundance (never, ever read Danish fantasy...) but I only found one of the Faroese ones to be any good. Of outlander's we pretty much only have Stephen King and Rowling, not the eyes of the dragon, but I'll be on the lookout for it Smile

I won't get a chance to really lay my hands on all the English ones before I go abroad to study in two years time (perhaps I'll find something in Iceland, or when I go to someplace yet undecided with the quintet). Up till now I've been buying books when I'm traveling and taking a quick look at the whoopingly big English selection of books in the Faroes Angry Blue Guy

For me the best part of the book was the business about Snape. No suspense? The previous six books were the suspense...he was the most ambiguous of the characters...

All in all an enjoyable conclusion to a fun series. Though, I didn't much like the epilogue...

Just curious Alias_HW where did Rowling borrow the world from?

Isn't it obvious? From me of course. She stole my idea! I'm going to sue her. Her and her dog too!!!

Um, right, moving on.

Well, I was a program on discovery a year or so back about ˜the world of'. In one episode they talked about the world Tolkien created for Lord of the Rings, and in another one they talked about the world Rowling created for Harry Potter. It was quite interesting actually and it shows that she actually did do quite some research for her book. In fact, most of the ˜world' she created has been used before, but she was the one that brought it all together. For instance, if I remember correctly hogwards (the school) was actually based on a castle in Scotland.

The problem is that I can't tell you that she borrowed the ˜world' from ˜there' because that's not what she did; she took a little bit from here, a little bit from there, and then some from over here again. On top of that it's (I guess) one year back since I saw that program. The point is that world wise there was little original in her stories. But she did take all of those elements and brought them together.

It would kinda be the same as someone writing a story in which all of SchFi is brought together from Star Trek over Starwars to HAL 9000 and Babylon 5.

The difference is that the things she used came from folklore and therefore nobody was going to sue her for copyright infringement while the makes of Star Trek would sure sue if you wrote a story in which a Klingon is the main character. I mean, who is going to sue because she uses wizards and goblins and all that. But still, there is very little to nothing original in her world... with the exception of the actual story of course. Smile

H.W.

Edit. LOL, look at the chance of it. That very program is now as I type running on Discovery Science. What are the chances of that I ask you?

It's actually called ˜the real world of Harry Potter.'

Edit 2:
First, please forgive spelling mistakes below, I just wrote down what I heard them say and they didn't spell out some words for me. Veryhappy But a few things mentioned were:

The street Harry lives in is modeled on the street where Rowling lived as a child.

Diagen (sp) ally is based on (real) old streets that truly do exist in London.

Many of the magical ingredients Harry buys there are in fact herbs that are still used today for medicinal purposes.

The Gray lady walks the corridors of Hogwards, she is in fact a ˜ghost' of Chilinghem (sp) castle.

Some of normal school life shown in the book is based on an English boarding school, which also has different names houses. The only difference there is that the real school actually mixes up character types instead of putting characters of the same ˜character type' together like the Hogwards ˜slithereen' house.

Hedridge (the half giant) is based by name and character on a person that served Zeus and took care of Zeus's animals. The same for the name ˜Draco Melofly' (sp) who is based on ruler from times passed that was so ruthless that we now have the word ˜draconian' in our vocabulary.

And after that I was tired of typing.
