You probably know more about such things than me, so I only have one advice for you:
Buy it and send it to me Shady

Freedom - a mountain in the distant sky, love in the grass, birds on the vast plains of the sea...
Freedom - I treasure your name, I love your sweet sound, I smell your dreams.

I see you - when I turn away
I hold you -when my hands are full

Freedom -
Never shall you be more than a name to me

This is an easy question, in my opinion. The DX10 era is coming, so I suggest you can wait until you can afford a DX10-compatible card. The only one on the market that supports it atm is GF8800, but it's a lot more expensive then 150 euros. The reason I'm saying it it's because if you don't upgrade to DX10, you are going to have to buy another one soon, after DX10-only games start popping out. That's my opinion and that's what I'm going to do too.

An year? A few months max... With teh_R600 from ATi, GeForce will be forced (no pun intended) to draw down the prices.

C'mon guys. There is no way he can get anything similar to 8800 at €150 before the summer, and I believe he needs it to enjoy it during this summer.

Karta, it depends on how limited you are with the money. If you are, you either have to wait for one more year or to settle with a X1950 / 7950 - and that's still hoping they will go as low as €150 before the summer (I'm talking good brands, like ASUS & such, otherwise you'll get more the number than the performance). Wink

I doubt we'll see a good 8800 under €300 before the end of the year.

I Had the same problem. I knew that DX10 is coming, but I wanted my new computer NOW. So I too went with a cheaper option card in the mindset that in a year when DX10 is firmly established and the DX10 cards have dropped in price I can get one then.

I went for the GeForce 7600gs.
It costs about 130 Euro (checked the price online, so it might be 150 at you local store.)
And it’s a pretty damn good card. Just look up some reviews online. For most of the games of now it is also more than enough. For instance, I installed Oblivion on my new PC and after checking my graphic system it automatically set all the settings to high. I have tried it and the game runs very smooth with that, so it is still a pretty beefy card.

Now, there is one drawback though. The 7600GS has ‘only’ 250MB memory. So when you have a really new game that needs 500mb memory you might have a problem. For instance, I don’t know what DM would need.

But, when you are truly looking for a ‘tie-me-over’ card that will last you a year or two in which you can still play most (if not all) modern games, I would defenetly have a look a the 7600GS.

That's a pretty good choice Karta. I'd go for the 7600GT, but if you can't find it for that amount of money (good manufacturer a-course, ASUS for example), then go ahead and get the 7600GS, it'll keep your pony running through the grass for quite a long time Big Grin

BTW, is there any ATI card, for 150-160€ of the same or even more power of the 7600GS? Is only i wanted a ATI since the last GeForce my father bought brought us a lot of problems, and also my own geforce... any one knows about ATI cards? Im a bit lost in that company ^^

I've got a 7900GS in my rig... pretty much the best cash-power ratio card on the market right now.

But yeah... they're probably getting closer to 200€ then 130€ over there.

The 7600GS I have is a Asus, and as I said, it works fine. Thumbs Up

If you want to go for the GT version, by all means, but I would suggest that you think of what you want from the card. Do you want it as a tie-over until you buy a new card in a year or two, or do you want to keep it for years.

The reason I’m asking is that I stated like that as well.

First I picked the 7600GS version. But then I realized that for only 40 Euro more I could get the GT version. So I wanted that. Than I realized that, well, for 40 more I could get the 7900. Oh, but wait, for only 40 more I can get the 7950. Oh, wait, for only 50 more I can get the 7950 with 500MB.

And suddenly I was looking a card that would cost me 350 euros instead of the 150 I started out with.

It is really tempting to go better and better, the real question to ask is; is it worth it? How long will you use the card? Especially with that damn DirectX10 problem. All GeForce cards that are under the 8800 are NOT DX10 compatible. So when you want DX10 in the future, you will need a new card. Keep that in mind when you spent money now for a card now.

... damn DX10... wtf... It's only that i cant afford one card like that... and the DX10 games are fully comaptible with DX9.0c cards so i dont have that problem... The problem will come in the next 2 years... when the games will be only DX10 compatible... then I will have to start thinking about a 8800... but now i think the 7600GS ASUS would be fine...

About my other question, any1 here knows about ATI?

Karta, about nVidia, don't look only at those 256MB. There's quite a difference between one on 128bit and one on 256bit. If you only need it by the beginning of the summer, you might get lucky enough to find a 7900 at a price pretty close to €150.

Regarding ATI, here's how it goes:

- An ATI X1650PRO can be roughly compared to a GeForce 7600GS
- An ATI X1650XT can be roughly compared to a GeForce 7600GT

Hope it helps.

Cheers, Wink

I'd recommend getting an 8000 series card if your going to be building a new system for Vista. If your keeping XP and plan to build a new system from the ground up later, get a 7800 GTX or something.
