I'm pretty much waiting on a reasonably priced DirectX 10 card before I go over.

Nope. I don't see myself doing any OS upgrades for at least 10 years or so. I simply don't buy many new games or new softwear...so XP is MORE than adequate for my needs. And my tight budget won't allow it anytime soon either.

"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings or endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning."

The only reason i want it is so i can mess around with DirectX10, but other than that there is no point upgrading whatsoever... and i doubt games companies are going to start programming games only in dx10 anytime soon.

Voted fore ...

Because eventually, yeah, I’ll get it. But not now. At the moment I predict problems with older programs (not to mention games) not running under it. So I’ll wait a couple of years until it’s all fixed and the downwards compatible (if Vista has it) works. The price for vista alone is already pretty steep since I am one of those that would get the deluxe edition, or however it’s called, simply to have all the options. But while that is a lot of money by itself, I don’t feel like also having to spent money buying new programs that actually run under the system. My Office 2003 works just fine for example, why get a new one?

In fact, I pretty much decided to buy myself a new comp and I deliberately asked for XP professional on it. This for the simple reason that I know that it works with the programs I have, that it is very stable, and by now they fixed the (major) bug in it.

So, yes, I’ll get it... probably around the time Microsoft comes out with the replacement for Vista. Mean Happy

Why? Will DX10 only be released for Vista? Surely Microsoft will be smart enough to understand that millions of people won’t get Vista now and therefore they will bring out DX10 as a 'program' that runs on both systems, just like the new IE, or Media player.
(He said hopefully.)

Guess again. Some dx10 stuff works on XP but games wont, most dx10 examples recieve the following message, unchanged and word for word.
quote:

Could not initialize Direct3D 10. This application requires a Direct3D 10 class device (hardware or reference rasterizer) running on Windows Vista (or later).

Its a lame attempt to get people to upgrade both their operating system & hardware... im almost expecting games released from microsoft to be vista only from now on. I doubt other game developers will switch over anytime soon... if ever.

IIRC that was their original plan in the first place.

Well, what Microsoft wishes hasn’t always turned out to be fact. (like WMA replacing PM3.)
I for one don’t see game makers running to DX10 in masses than. As it has been brought up several times in the forum; the CP game market is getting heavy competition from the console games.

Somehow I really don’t think that game makers will be so stupid as to bring out games that will only work on Vista. They are having a tough time as it is, and than they would willingly cut down the potential buyer base to Vista people only? I don’t think so.

At best they would create a product that runs on DX 9, and 10, and then go on an on about how it runs perfect under 10 and you should really get that, knowing that nobody but Microsoft cares.

But, who knows.

Well, it is short from: "I'll look around, see what others say about it, give it a try first, and after I'll buy my new computer, maybe I'll buy it."
