I just want to point to new game called Battle Lord which is developed by Katauri Interactive (creators of Space Rangers one of the best games made in Russia).
If I'm not mistaken it is KB like TBS/RPG.
Sreenshots here. There is good graphics and interface is MUCH better then in Heroes (imho). On russian game forums people say that this game will be big HOMMV rival.
PS Sorry for my english.

Tkane from rpgdot.com:

It isn't actually a clone of HoMM, although there are some similarities. It's much more like King's Bounty. There is not much strategic element - it's more an RPG. And the adventure mode (on the global map, I mean) is actually real-time, full of quests and dialogues. The battles are, of course, turn-based.

There you have it Smile

I'm not sure about the graphics and stuff, and I'll stick to my heroes, thank you. Kinda reminds me of Warcraft 3 somehow. Nice game though, good job Rusia.

There is new interview(1,2) with developers on crpg.ru. I didn't find any translation so I made it by myself.
/*...*/ - my comments.
Rough translation:
There is nothing strange that since its announcement game Battle Lord attracted attention of all /*Russian*/ game magazines and tens or even hundreds of thousands gamers. Such big attention was caused not only by obvious advantages but also by prestige of its creators. Most part of Katauri team including their head Dmitriy Gusarov are creators of both parts of Space Rangers that made us finally be proud of russian games. Only famous IL-2 /*flight simulator*/ had same effect. BL is very ambitious and interesting project with such rare sincere approach to development. So lets go on to interview with Katauri CEO Dmitriy Gusarov/*idol for russian gamers Smile*/ and game designer Ivan Magazinnikov.
/*Interview is big so it was devided in 2 parts*/

Part1.
Crpg: BL announcement has caused big interest and high expectations. Tell us what team was doing after SR2 release. Why there was such sudden switch from space to fantasy.
DG (Dmitriy Gusarov): Work started about 1.5 year ago. SR2 was not released but our artists had already painted some concept art and programmers studied "Blood magic" engine/*Russian Action-RPG*/. So we had no break after SR2 release.
Idea came long ago when company New Game Software existed. While working on General /*I'm not sure what it is, looks like their first game*/we discussed King's Bounty and how to improve its adveture/RPG elements not strategy. There is excellent japanese console game Fire Emblem which has 2 modes adventure and tactical. It's still popular. Unlike KB it has stronger RPG elements, every part has plot, every character can be leveled and equiped and they also have relationship even love. So we used this 2 games as base and added features from other jRPG like guardians from FF and live items from Disgaea. So we got interesting story and fascinating gameplay.
/*After that DG says that they switched to fantasy because they were tired of making SR1/SR2 for 5 years and wanted to try something new*/
Cprg: What is BL about? Tell us about general conception. Is it HOMM-clone or not?
IM (Ivan Magazinnikov): As we said we wanted to improve ideas of KB and make it more adventure with much better combat system. There is one character who travels on map in real-time and commands his army on battle arenas.
Crpg: Can you tell us anything about game setting and scenario?
IM: At first we wanted to create easily understandable classical fantasy world with traditional races, characters, etc. It is not fairy tale for childred but have some "brightness" /*I don't know how to translate it correctly*/ like Zelda, B&W, Pirates, etc. There is no bloody brutality, dark despair, etc. We want to make romantic, idealized, magic and a little ironic/*funny?*/ world where every brave knight can fight dragon and save his princess.
DG: Scenario is almost ready. It's quiet big. I'm usually very sceptic about scenarios but I think that this one is very interesting and fascinating. Scenario is very diverse and has unexpected story twists. It's also kind and smart like "Little Prince" by Saint-Exupery. We cann't guarantee that everything will be ok but we are working very hard.
Cprg: What can you tell us about main hero? Who is he, what are his goals ?
IM: Main hero is young knight, at start he has small army and while you're playing his status is growing and he can become duke /*baron?*/ or even prince.
DG: Player defines his goals we don't want to restrict him.
Crpg: On all screenshots protagonist has name Bill Gilbert. Why?
DG: Player can choose name. Our name is for older gamers. Everybody who played on Spectrum knows this inscription "Cracked by Bill Gilbert" Smile
Crpg: We can play only with our main hero or there are some other characters?
IM: We're discussing this for a long time. Interesting idea but it depends on how much time we have.
DG: I think we'll make few quests with additional characters.
CRPG: So we have 2 modes: adventure and tactical. Tell us something about first mode.
DG: Everything is very simple. Imagine Diablo or Sacred. We are moving on 3D map and after meeting some monster we are going to arena and turn-based mode. If you've found castle then you can enter it, buy army, items, scrolls, sell useless items, leave part of army in garrison, talk to castle ruler. On map there are also friendly NPCs with which you can talk and they can give you missions. There different type of quests for example somebody wants you to kill dragon and when you meet dragon he can give you another quest so you can choose what is more favorable.
Overall you are running through map and collecting usefull items. We want to make it like in King's Bounty where map is reach with different objects. BTW many items are hidden underground. We want player to find treasure maps and to dig territory.
Crpg: Are dialogs branching? Will choices have consequences? Is game linear or not?
IM: As you can see on screenshots dialogs have classical RPG scheme e.g. like in Fallout. Interaction with NPC is main method to get quests and information about surrounding world, so there will be complicated brachy dialogs, hidden branches, etc.
Game scenario is linear but very flexible, some quests have different ways of solution and can be solved in random order. Replayability is achieved through non-linear quest, different game tactics for different starting characters and random placing of some game objects.
Crpg: How is game world organised? Many locations connected with each other or maybe one global map? Will main hero have rivals like in Space Rangers?
DG: We have 30 locations connected with each other maybe there will be even more. They are connected with roads, ships, teleports and dirigibles /*O_o*/ There are no rivals. Game idea is exploration. World is scripted like in Diablo or Fable.
Crpg: Tell us about turn-based combats why did you choose them?
DG: Well our combat system is classical that's why we choose it. Units have initiative /*like HOMMV*/ and action points like in KB and Age of Wonders. Every turn unit can make several actions, for example mage can run off enemy and cast spell. Also on field there are different objects like treasure chests and monsters that can attack you or your opponent. There is parameter called rage which is growing during combat when it is big enough you can summon guardians like in FF.
Crpg: Will hero participate in combat? /*like HOMM4*/
IM: No, he only casts spells and summon guardians.
Crpg: Tell us about what are creatures in hero's army? How many races are there?
IM: There are many different creatures. We have such races as Humans, Elves, Gnomes, Orcs, Undead and Demons. There also many neutrals and rare dragons. We also have unique "superboss" enemys.
Crpg: Will there be penaltys for more then one race in army.
IM: Of course. Different races have different relationships and can increase or decrease moral. Moral affects army's effectivness. Some creatures can have unique relationships e.g. ents protect driads and dragons hate giants. Also there commander units that can increase moral.
Crpg: How many stacks are there?
IM: 5 stacks. Also after some development player can get 2 additional slots for reserve. Those stacks don't participate in combat.
DG: Many gamers think that more units and bigger battlefields means better gameplay. It's not fully correct. Quality is more important then quantity. 5 units with different specialities and action points, spell book, guardians and third part (neutrals and objects on battlefield) are more then enough for fascinating gameplay on battlefield. BTW player has opportunity to have ally on battlefield so sometimes you'll see doubled army.
Crpg: Tell us about RPG system.
IM: Everything is simple. You get XP after battles or quests, increase your level. After your character advances to next level you can increase one of two randomly choosen characteristics (depend on class) and also get few runes of talent /*possibly not correct translation*/. These runes can be spent to increase skills. There are more then 30 different skills divided in 3 skill trees(strength, magic, spirit). Also every class has its own unique skills.

Part2
Crpg: Equipment is important part of RPG. Will there be big selection of items? Unique artifacts? Maybe so calles "sets"?
DG: There will be more than 50 different items. These items have relationships with us, they are "alive". Also you can fight with item guardians "inside" this item.
IM: Live items are rare artifacts, they can change characteristics and it depends on relationship with hero. For example if you have undead army your Elven Silver Chainmail becames useless cursed armor. There many other factors that influence it. You can fight item guardians to change cursed artifact to normal state.
We will made "sets" /*combined artifacts*/
Crpg: Main hero also has small slot for wife and 4 children. What are bonuses of such family? Are they can be divorced? Are there
several brides?
IM: These slots are mainly for additional artifacts not only for children. There are several potential brides and of course possibility of divorse. Every wife gives unique bonuses like additional moral, mana, money.
You can marry after completion of special quest.
DG: Actually while making SR I thought about Sid Meyers's Pirates and made trade, pirates, battles and wanted to make wifes but had no time. So we implemented it in BL.
Crpg: you mentioned rage spirits(guardians). Tell us about them. How many guardians and what abilities do they have?
IM: Rage Spirits are super creatures which can be found during travel and summoned on battlefield. There are 4 such creatures each has 4 unique attacks. Spirits also gain expirience /*disciples?*/ and can improve existing attacks or get new ones. Every guardian has different attack type e.g. Fire Spirit burns enemy and Marsh Spirit poisons.
Crpg: Ivan, you mentiones classes. How many classes are there? Which special abilities do they have?
IM: There are 3 classes: warrior, mage and paladin. Perhaps we'll make specialization inside classes. Classes differs by starting set of characteristics and skills, tree skill structure and some unique skills. Some quests are connected with class. Warrior has big army and can strengthen it but weak in magic, mage has small army but very powerful in magic. Paladin is in the middle and specialized in destroying undead.
Crpg: Main hero has parameter called rank. For what is it needed?
Rank (title) grows while player goes through scenario. New creatures and items become available as rank grows. Also your leadership increases and new quests become available.
Crpg: Tell us about magic. How many schools and spells are there?
IM: 3 magic schools: Order, Chaos, Distortion /*transformation?*/ each has about 20 spells, and 1 "peaceful" Adventure school. Adventure magic can slow monsters, decrease their field of vision, make hero invisible, etc. Scrolls and spell books can be found, bought, taken after quest completion.
Crpg: Tell us about buidings. What are their functions? How many are there?
IM: We have 2 types: castles and others. Hostile castles can be captured on special arenas. In friendly castle there are up to 3 NPC-rulers, shop, garrison, you can also get some bonuses and modify items and creatures.
Crpg: There is very good interface especially when you compare it to HOMMV. How much attention do you pay to interface?
IM: /*Explains that they pay very much attention to interface*/
DG: I think interface is very important for player. And BL interface is very good, it's stylish, handy, informative. It needs much work, some elements are even made for several months.
Crpg: You use Blood magic engine. How many things were made over? How good is it? Why did you choose it?
IM: Some things had to be made over very much. We made absolutely new game toolset. Guys from SkyFallen/*creators of Blood magic*/ help us very much, adding new and improving existing features.
DG: We chose this engine because it was offered by publisher. Engine is new and interesting.
Crpg: Tell us about music. Did you choose composer?
IM: We working with several talented composers. Some music available in videos.
Crpg: Will you make voice acting?
IM: We want it but it depends on our publisher (1C).
Crpg: In some interview Dmitriy said that when signing contract you chose not best variant. Is situation different now? Do you feel that your status changed after colossal success of both parts of Space Rangers?
DG: Now everything is much better thanks to changed status. We got this project only because we proved that we are able to make big games. We always wanted to get into "superleague" to make serious projects and now it has happened.
Crpg: What are your plans on global market? What publisher will be in West? What did you learn from Space Rangers?
IM: Plans are big. We want to make high class game. But success depends on western publisher very much. We has just started to find western publisher.
DG: From SR we learned that text part should be smaller because it's hard to translate. So we want BL to be understandable to everybody not only Russian gamers.
Crpg: And final question. In what stage is project?
IM: Gameplay and content base is ready, so game is already playable. We are working hard on feature list and some other things. There is much work to do. Game will be released in 2nd half of 2007.

Aside from the strange looking and small battlefield, I am liking the way this looks. It definitely has a Heroes look to it.
