I love watching Anime! It's much better than the usual shows on TV and it looks great. Funny thing about anime is that when I (and all my friends) first heard of anime, we associated it with "childish" and "low quality" shows but we all changed our minds after watching our first Anime Smile. It seems to me that we thought this way because of shows like pokemon that we hated so much.

I watched FullMetal Alchemist (my favorite Anime so far), and some others like Naruto, Bleach, Law of Ueki, Generator Gawl... (my friends watch even more than me). I recommend you to try out FullMetal Alchemist if you didn't watch it already (and even if you did Smile).

Anime Music Videos are great also so here are some AMV:
Alchemist's Trade (by TGProductions)
FMA Always Hardcore (by Nostromo)
Toushi (by Majin Kenshin)

Edit: I updated the links so now you enter the AMV page so you just scroll down and choose your download

You can get more Anime Music Videos in AnimeMusicVideos.org

Cowboy Bebop was cookass. You should definitely give it a try - both the series and the movie ("Knocking on Heaven's Door").

Another personal fav. is Rurouni Kenshin (or Samurai X if you want the English-dubbed version).

Ah the childhood memories ...

By the way, if you want to watch Naruto make sure you won't watch the last season! It'll make you forget all the good episodes of Naruto. This Anime is a bit childish compared to others but everybody likes Naruto Smile

Interesting enough, an national RPG Magazine here made an adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist this month, and the anime didn't even start here. It will be a month before it starts in Animax (paid TV channel in DirecTV, that is a bit more than I can afford Frown )
Here the most known anime is Zodiac Knights (assumong that this isn't the usual twisted translation from anime names), yep, that ol' anime.
From the adaptation it looks like Fullmetal Alchemist is interesting, but the "Alchemy Equal Trade principle" (again, if isn't a twisted translation) seems to be a bit too pretentious to me. With any luck it will start passing at Cartoon Network or even open channels... (Even I didn't believe that last one... Zodiac Knight is the most famous here because it is basically the only anime our open TV has...)

My personal faves : Bleach and Fruit Basket

We strive to destroy the evil around us. Yet, we often forget that there is no light without darkness, nor darkness without light. Perhaps a plant it the best analogy. A plant realizes that too little light is deadly, but it also knows that too much light is equally deadly. It is the balance of the two that makes the world .

I'm soooo happy to hear that! bow
The normal episodes are amazing - the story line and the abilities of every character very original. But the fillers always end with something stupid like wasting 3 episodes because Naruto farted Crying. I don't even want to watch them and I hope I won't have to. By the way, why does Naruto always say "datebayo" after every sentence? Hammer

Time to come up with something lesser know:

Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsukikage_Ran
Short, fun, great animated. If you like female samurais that are actually cool, this is your anime.
Girl-safe, actually most girls will like this series if they can relate to a strong women type.

Hyper-Police
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper_Police
pictures: http://www.darkharbor.com/noriko/hyperpolice/

An antromorph 25 part anime series that ran in the late evening window. If catgirls, werewolves and the assorted cast of japanese beast in a world where humans are an endangered species is you thing, this series is for you. Nice plotting, actually touches real life problems yet light air.
Not really sexist, girl safe. My sister watched all episodes and she is usually fickle about such things.

Two tips you might not find in every suggestion list ^^

Can't say I liked the series [the manga is way better] but the 1st OVA [Tsuiokuhen or Trust & Betrayal] is by far my favourite anime

Other ones that I liked were Berserk [read the manga, it's by far the best I've read], Elfen Lied, Chrno Crusade, Akira, Trigun, Bleach and Serial Experiments Lain.

datebayo

'Cause the Japanese find it cute :P (no offense)
It's something commonly used in many shows. A character looks cute if s/he finishes a sentence using a weird word or even speaks only that word Big Grin [i.e. Kenshin's "degozaru" or Lucy's-from Elfen Lied-"nyuu"]

Interstella 5555 if you like something more experimental... weblink? Just look around. Let's simply say Daft Punk meets Leiji Matsumoto, literally Big Grin

I for one never liked Anime,

In my eyes, Walt Disney was the master of drawn animation, since I started drawing from a very little age, I kind of looked up to him and his work, it was very inspiring and it compleltly capured me.

I saw some anime, but it never impressed me, I just felt dissapointed more and more as I began to notice how often they are just repeating the same animations over and over and over, or the obscene amount of slo-mo scrolling, anyway, it all made the impression that too many shortcuts are taken when it comes to anime.

Anyway I had to get it out once I saw the thread, sorry Smile

Well, ever seen Spirited Away? Ghibli movies should change that for you.

Also don't forget that Disney is mostly remembered for theatrical features while current TV anime is on a whole different budget. Though some time ago some quality titles surfaced, namely Naruto and Inu Yasha. Both suffer hardly any from your points of criticism.

The two shows I recomended first hand also feature astoundingly good animation for a TV feature, especially Ran.

Of course, the golden age of US TV animation was still something different, but that's a time long past.
