Hello Finns!

From what Vessa (my sister's husband) tells me, Tove Jansson was indeed a Finnish person of Swedish decent. Very common considering that you can actualy SEE Sweden from across the water on a clear day from the coast on that side of Finland I was very interested to hear of some of the history between Sweden and Finland. Lots of culteral mixing as well as lots of changeovers of ruling power between the two countries. Vessa taught me a lot about your history when I was there, fascinating stuff.

Have either of you visited the Turku Castle? There are some great things in there, relics of Swedish and Finnish decent.

I have been in Turku, but not visited in the castle.

Well Finland was part of Sweden before Russians took over =D But then we started to fight for a real and became independent country..

Hmm...Romania wasn't always a united country...during medieval times, there were three states: Moldavia , Transylvania and Wallachia ( which the German traders used to call 'Wlachenland' ) . Ok, so the name Wallachia comes from the a slavic word for 'Romanian'(I don't know it's original form in the old slavic language), which ,in the Romanian language (which,unlike the neighbouring languages, is a Romanic language, derived from Latin, related to French,Italian,Spanish and Portuguese) , mantained it's form, 'vlah' ...so that is how the neighbouring slavic peoples call us, in terms which derive from 'vlah', in forms such as 'blah', 'blach' , 'vlach'......so this is what I think the 'black' was all about....I don't know Russian, but, considering that it is a slavic language, it might as well have a term for 'Romanian', which resembles 'blach'.

I'm also from Finland and my last name is Swedish, but in my family we speak 3 languages: Finnish, English and Swedish.
