Hello everyone,

My username is/was DarkWraith007 and I participated in the closed beta testing for the original FarCry for PC.

When the game was being tested, everyone was given a 'Beta v1' via ftp download (with login and everything). After extensive testing and suggestions (increasing default movement speed on foot, you moved like a sloth originally) the devs finally released Beta v2 near the end of the beta testing. But the servers were only online for about a week to 'test' before the game was determined to be 'gold' and released.

It was only a multiplayer beta client, no single player testing. Multiplayer is still difficult, from what I've heard. If anyone doesn't yet own the game, you can get it for about $5 online, but you can also just download it for free (with some ads) and play through the single player. Unless you really want the mods and the mediocre multiplayer, the free version is your best bet.

The beta testers helped a TON with stability issues, as the difference between the incredibly-buggy Beta v1 and relatively-stable v2 were like night and day.

I don't doubt that people don't play this game much anymore due to the multiplayer being either 'camp & snipe' or 'camp and ambush'. The ridiculously-huge maps and extensive cover only reward the 'camp & snipe' tactics, which leads to boring multiplayer.

I still have a ton of (very old) screenshots from Beta v1 that I might get around to posting sometime, just for historical sake.

Thanks for the historical perspective. I have to agree that single player FC is far better than the online experience mostly because of the poor netcode.

Camp and snipe might be an appropriate description of the free-for-all game mode, but Assault mode is completely different. Its a team based game with offense and defense that cannot be played without cooperation and teamwork. It cannot be described as boring.

I played FC1 online for three years before moving to COD4. Far Cry assault is still the best game mode I have played for non-stop action, teamwork and skill in a video game.

Probably best not to mention the free ad-sponsored version, it was a labour day promotion for US players and it only lasted for a short while. It is no longer possible to play it as you cannot activate the game.

Loads of people still get caught out by this because several 'download' sites still list it. Only when they download and install the 'freebie' do they realise they cant play it.
