has anyone else tryed to make building using the pipes in the refinery set?

Do you mean just pipes and nothing else?

ever thought about a defect pump? i mean be real, there are only vehicle wrecks so why should the pumps work?

I have built building out of pipes like bunkers, but im more tallented with closed containers
