IMDB has this film ranked at # 78 on their 250 best films of all time list.
The main character may look like the guy from flight of the cConcords, but he is based in name off of a real person who was one of the main figures in Apartheid and the actual District 6 on which District 9 is based upon. Read some history about that incident and you will see all of the parallels. Still have not seen this. It was sold out on Saturday when we went. Watched a few minutes on the web, but the sound quality was not that great so I turned it off. |

Peter Jackson's films are fantastic, so this was pretty much to be expected.

I don't know, today's movies seem to lack in realism, I'm just not impressed anymore. District 13 (parkour type French movie that happens in the suburbs) is an awesome movie too, but the special effects in Hollywood just don't seem to cut it anymore.

I'm a little surprised that the movie garnered a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The realism/plausibility of the story is a little off. Sure it's science fiction, but perhaps the difficulty I have in accepting what the director shows you has to do with the lack of a "meaty" back-story and the implication that this could happen, what with the shaky camera and interviews. Doesn't help that I found the main character to be unsympathetic and annoying. I do give the movie credit for having some neato special effects and weapons.

You are not supposed to notice the special effects in this film. That is where the realism comes in.
Your brain knows that all of that stuff is fake. It cannot think otherwise. But if the stuff blends seamlessly then it is a damn good job. for example, most films nowadays film all of their big effects sequences with a Blue filter to make it look more realistic. This film showed everything in broad daylight. Which added weight. It was also filmed in a real shanty filled with dead animals and dirty people. THe Idea was to elicit a feeling of disgust in the viewer, both at the ugliness of the aliens and the atrocious living conditions for which they were subjected to for 28 years. That way you begin to overcome your own predjudices and begin to pull for the plight of the Prawns near the end. Bottom line, complaining that special effects don't look realistic is like complaining that Ice cream is to cold. Same thing with the main character. You are purposely supposed to dislike him only so you can see him as somewhat redemptive near the end. They set up the back story in the very beginning. You know what happened. It has been that way since soon after their arrival. The film takes place today. Right now. This is not Star Wars or even Star Trek for that matter. This is a social commentary about one countries history disguised as a sci-fi film. |

Well put sir |

I actually think the special effects look very smooth.

That just means you're not doing a good job seeking out the kind of movies you wanna see |

Ok, you know the movie is about aliens, yet you go and pay to see the movie. WHERE IN YOUR MIND DOES IT TELL YOU ALIENS ARE REALISTIC TO BEGIN WITH, NEVER MIND THE SPECIAL EFFECTS.
Also, people exploded. It was neat. |

Yeah I can't believe Devi_Kali's comments. I have never seen a scifi that was more believable that it could really happen. This entire movie is just a scifi spin on events and treatment of different human races that have occured over and over in the course of human existance. I mean you could replace the aliens with refugees from another country and it could also be the exact same minus all the advanced tech.
Of course there were several aspects to the movie that were "hand wavy" like the fact that the mothership had enough power to hover for 20+ years but couldn't fly back home. I sort of missed the part of the movie where they were talking about assuming that most of the aliens were the lower class\workers\less intelligent part of the population and that their leader must have died and left them to wander aimlessly. |

Good lord, some of you get really defensive about whether someone is less in awe about a movie than most others.
Stonelance, I already acknowledged that the movie is part of the sci-fi genre, and yes, there is of course a need for a suspension of disbelief. That said, my comments about realism were geared more towards how the aliens were handled by the various world governments. I find it hard to believe that an encounter with an alien race--the remnants of which we presume are worker class--would then lead to the type of disgusting slum we see "present" day. And again, a good part of that can be blamed on having only a slim back-story given at the beginning of the movie. The parallels to racism were obvious and I'm sure intended, but everything was a little too exaggerated for my taste. And zeeEvil, I can bring up several other characters from various other movies that are meant to be disliked....and I love them the more for it, but not with this movie. It's all a matter of personal opinion but I felt little for any of the characters and I certainly don't think that makes me incapable of appreciating character development. |

What makes you think governments would treat aliens any differently than members of another race\culture\country\religion of humans? If anything, it would be worse.
|
|||
|
I've thought of that and it is a good point to raise. There are times when I look for movies that treat aliens just a little better (hah!) rather than as a heavy handed metaphor for human immorality. The best example I can think of would be the movie Contact, which is a story that revolved around something believable and yet dealt with the paranoia/frailty/etc. around such a first encounter, if you could really call it that. I'm willing to give District 9 a second-shot, because I still think that it was unique in several ways.

Yeah i'm not saying it is the best sci fi ever. I am not even sure if I am willing to go so far as to say I loved it. I just thought it was an original take on the genre and a good way to mix it with issues that are currently facing us.
I loved Contact, but I wouldn't really call it believable. Perhaps the physics of it just seemed silly to me. The rest of the movie was great. |
