As for the created songs idea, the lack of lyrics kills it for me & not just because I'm the singer in Rock Band.
It also says that you can upload original works, which I'm taking to mean any works that aren't copyrighted. So like if you have an unsigned band, perhaps they could upload their songs and go that route. Not sure how exactly that would work, because I'm sure you'd have a million cover versions of "Stairway to Heaven" floating around.

The new Studio Mode will let users not only freely jam over songs in the game but also create and upload their own original tracks. Using a vertically-scrolling grid, you'll be able to record rhythm, lead, melody, bass and drums (sorry, no vocals) and create loops and effects.
That's right from the IGN article.
It's not only that which makes me not terribly impressed by the Song Creator but the fact that any other console game I've played that has custom content like that (or map editors for FPS games), 99.5% of everything that comes out if it is ****.
Honestly, I could care less if 95% of user-created content is ****. I'm glad that developers are starting to realize that people want the freedom to create their own stuff. Just look at some of the great stuff that we've seen with games like Forza and Far Cry. There's a lot of garbage out there, but there are also plenty of talented people out there who have been yearning for this type of stuff.
This was the cover story in the newest Game Informer Mag.
After reading the entire article. It seems they want to challenge RockBand. So far, it sounds interesting. The drums definately caught my eye(there is a pic of the prototype in the mag I have =) ). 3 pads plus two cymbals mounted above and a much stronger and more realistic look to them.
I was very intrigued when they talked about the new guitar as well. Not lot of info was given. They were however, gushing about some new features that they have on it that are soo cool. They are in the process of patenting the creation. Sounds tasty indeed.
At any rate. This sounds interesting but, I still want to wait and read or see more info on this. The fact there aren't any vocals really dampends the whole package. The song creator, although cool. Sounds like it will be very limited as to what you can actually do, and without vocals, what good is creating anything. Boring...

Even if created tracks don't have vocals, it's not really that big of a deal for me. Heck, there are plenty of great bands out there who have instrumental tracks. I think it could potentially be very interesting to see what people come up with.
I should clear up that there WILL be vocals in the game itself. Just not in the music creation modes.
They are really going all out on this user created idea. Very elaborate plan. A sole network will be available just for created music. Sort of a 'Youtube' for GH. After reading the article(In GameInformer) again. It seems that the options will much more vast than I originally read about at IGN. I'm definately buying into what they are about to attempt. If it's done right. This game will break open a whole new world that connects music with gaming, along with inventive minds. Of course there will be trash. There will also be some really good stuff as well.
Now. To just get a release date for this. So we can really start getting excited about it.

I just finished reading the feature on this game in the new issue of GI and i have to say that even i want it. Vocals? Who cares. How about the ability to completely create your own songs on every instrument, then not only play them but upload them to a special community sight so others can download them and play them in their game. Or becoming featured artist because you turn in consistently good material. You may even get signed by Neversoft and have your music appear in future GH games as part of the song list.

I care & that's my problem... It's not on every instrument. Effectively, the song creator cuts out a quarter of the game, taking a four player experience down to a three player experience.
I'm not saying there won't still be some good things to come out of the song creator or that they should scrap the idea or anything like that. I'm just saying that putting such a mode in the game & then butchering it by leaving out such a big chunk out of it is a mistake.
It would be like the Far Cry map editor only letting you make maps that could be played in deathmatch & none of the other modes.
It'll still probably be a good addition but it could be much better.
