@weasalboy; My character is an actual character from the Wizard of Oz stories. There are actually multiple books from the original author, and they are very dark compared to the classic film.
This is my own take on the character with the false face and the steampunk machinery.
you saw this character in The WIZ but it was portrayed differently.

My comic literally takes place in Kansas and OZ. As well as in some of the realms of the tales. With Hansel and Gretal and Many of those characters.

The reason that this has taken so long is because about 6 monthes into it, sci-Fi announced that mini series Tin-Man. It sort of threw us off of our game. Plus after it released I ended up having to do some rewrites to it because they had some similarities.
Like the Tin Man being a cop. But he wasn't human. He was an automaton like in the film

As far as the Buffy aspect goes, This is my main character. Her name is Trudy Trizell.

She is 16. Her mother recently passed and her family is moving to Kansas where she will discover she has a much larger destiny than she realizes. And if she doesn't get her confidence and strength, she may not survive. She has a group of friends that she will meet in Kansas that will get dragged into her adventure with her.
Similar to Buffy. That is why I made the comparison.

She will come across this familiar character in Kansas and find that theirs is a shared destiny.

This is Puss in Boots.

And of course, my story has a few villains along the way as well as some troublemakers.

But none of them can compare to the truly evil of this woman.

The Wicked Witch of the West.

There are a lot of characters in the story. Good and bad.
I am trying to turn some fairy tale conventions on their ear. Hopefully I will succeed.

When we get some pages finished and in color I will post a couple of them here for you guys to critique for me before thay are entered into the Zuda competition.

I had heard about the books before (being darker and all,) I just had no idea the Wiz (THANK YOU for remembering the name! Big Grin) had any basis on the books. I guess I always just assumed it was someone's spin on the movie

I do remember the guys from the Wiz being quite a bit different than your interpretation, though. And honestly, from what I can remember from the movie, I like yours better. Much more imposing and powerful-looking.

BTW, you draw hot 16yr old girls.

I like the Puss in Boots and Wicked Witch designs. The familiarity of the more traditional storytelling designs I think will really help you say a lot without having to specifically say a lot. If that makes sense.

Well, for example, w/o even looking at your descriptions for both, I was able to tell who they were and already have that recognizable link to at least their physical appearance, if not their personalities.

That's one thing that always kills visual media for me when characters are involved: if I can't identify characters, sympathize with them, or at least have a vague understanding of who's who as soon as they are introduced as a player (and from there on out through the story,) I just can't get into it.

@Arumi and Ninja Chick; You are both very talented and your drawings are both very well done. Its nice to see that they are not like a straight on shot and have a bit more personality to them.
Please share more.

@weasleboy; Puss in boots appears in the very beginning of the book, but you will not know directly who he is until a couple of chapters into the story. He is a major player in the whole thing and has a 12-14 page story that tells how he ended up Kansas side.

The rollers in the WIZ were like a gang who were dressed in Disco styled Zoot suits. I wanted something more monsterous. Not based off of the books or that film.
The film was a musical with Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow.

Heres the trailer

Its basically the same story but they gave it an all black cast and Made dorathy a school teacher from Harlem.
It was good and a bit darker than the original in some ways.

I am glad you think Trudy is hot. That is something she will discover about herself as her confidence and strength return.

Artists are coming out of the woodwork! Noice!

Zee - LOVE your comic book stuff, as always. You definitely have serious skills to make all of us look bad here, haha. Is your comic going to be aimed towards a younger audience? Can't wait to see more!

weaselboy - that render looks ridiculous, it looks so real! Love the ultra-realistic lighting and sick sick sick shadows casted by those glasses!

Sasha - FFX is like... my second favorite FF, ever (next to FFVI!). That Yuna sketch = hawt. Make moar! FFVI, please. Wink

Arumi - I love your first sketch. Does that originally look like that? Or is it just the flash? Either way, I like the whole "flashed upon" look (ESPECIALLY if you did it intentionally, minus the flash). You did a really awesome job with the modelling, in that sketch. Smile

UKYO; thanks for the support. As for the comic, It will be somthing that is more teen and above based. The story will have some elements that may be a bit beyond the younger readers and the violance will definitely be geared towards teens and above.

@weasleboy; I also want to give props to you for those renders you have shared on the site. Really good stuff. I wish I had those capabilities.

Since we're doing self portraits from high school... This is a from my senior year/ 2005. It's black and white pastels only on big grey paper.

I'll be done with the piece I'm working on soon.

I feel flattered by Ukyo's amazing art every time I open this thread. My favorite is probably the original, then B. I'm still in awe of them.
This thread was a great idea, sensei! This is a great argument to those who say gamers aren't talented, creative, or productive. (^.^)

I wish I knew what I did with MY high school self-portrait. I actually really liked that one, too... proud of what I did on my attention to detail. My best stuff goes in the trash, oh the irony. :P

And at the moment, I think my scanner is broken. This can't be good for our hero!

Instead, since we're going for this "Blast From The Past" theme (I love doing this, it's like hopping on a time machine!), I'll post something that I did on my first year of college:

This is probably one of the most ridiculous drawings I've ever drawn, because we had a ONE-MINUTE TIME LIMIT to draw this live nude model, heh. Kind of surprised how well I drew this one, I hate rushing my drawings, haha.

Luckily, the nude model was actually kind of attractive for that round. The previous 5 were all old or fugly. :P

Medium: Charcoal pencil on cheap sketch pad paper. Did a LOT of rubbing the pencil with my left hand (for shading/modelling) while drawing with my right hand.

Quick random question: How does everyone hold their pencil here?

I have been holding my pencil like a sword, lately (when I'm drawing). Instead of drawing with thumb+index strokes, I'm using my entire wrist for drawing motion. My drawings look dramatically different since I've tried "changing forms"... my circular/rounded strokes have become much more organic and natural.

It's like... uh... changing from Mantis Stance to Crane Stance! Or something!

Time to make moar art. I have been freed from my art shackles!

Rediscovery. Reinvention. Reinvigoration. Rebirth. Revival. Resurrection. REVOLUTION!

Wow, I never thought that this many forum members would have an artistic bent. I really like that pastel drawing, Sarabellum--along with several other pieces that others have already posted. Since high school art class was mentioned, here is a portrait I sketched when I was 15. Eight years really do fly by but I'm fairly certain I based this off a photo of James Cameron. Sorry for the crappy quality. I had to take a photo as I couldn't use my scanner at the moment.
And here is another one of my hands. I really do love drawing hands:

Thank you! <3 I plan to, hopefully. I don't have uber-1337 digital art skills, so I suppose I should continue with sketching until I become better with photoshop. Razz

I actually took that picture with my webcam (no flash!) at the time, and now I can't find that sketchbook... T_T I plan on starting to draw again, after I pick up my art supplies from storage!

Everyone - It's really awesome that there are so many amazing artists in this community. Everyone's artwork is of a noticeably different style, and still incredible. Heart
