As the title implies, this is a thread for all sorts of Art and Design!

Reasons why we need one:

- We have a SURPLUS of artists in this community! You name them: Phineas1382 (The Sigmaster!), ZeeEvil1 (Comic Book Artist), sarabellum86 (Non-Artist Artist, lmao...), seductivpancakes (Up-And-Coming Digital Artist), ERRSkate151 (Time-Based Media Artist, and also Digital Artist), and I'm sure many more (please don't hate me for leaving you out!);

- To encourage other artists here in this community to post THEIR art;

- Could be a thread to post arts of other artists that we may like;

- Be inspired to create masterpieces of your own, just in case you are in a creative funk;

- Andrew/Pancakes is repeatedly kicking my butt in Photoshop, and this is a good reason for me to force myself to be creative again, even if it's only once in a while. :P

Of course, there are also ground rules. I'll only have 2:

1) Be CONSTRUCTIVE of your criticism.
2) CREDIT an artist where it's due, if you're posting art that ISN'T YOURS.

Well, that's enough of that, here's my contribution (for now). This is what I've been working on lately:

Piece Title: The Lord of Nightmares
Artist's Statement:

This is initially a fun B.S. project that I wanted to do, with an "unknown subject matter". :P Originally inspired when various art pieces of said "unknown subject matter" started to appear in this forum, courtesy of our very own: seductivepancakes.

So then I told myself, "Hey, I can do that too! This'll be a nice, fun challenge for myself to emulate a similar theme."

In addition, I have been inspired to create a (perhaps) unique form of art, after a conversation with a fellow artist. This form of art utilizes feeling, memories, and emotion generated while listening to music. Music has been known to change a person's mood in a short instance, or it may even change a person's temperament for an entire day. And hence, the quality/nature of an artistic piece may be affected, as well, based on what kind of music you are listening to.

For this particular piece, I listened to "Midnight In A Perfect World" by DJ Shadow.

The music had a strange, inexplicable euphoric effect as I listened to its soothing, tranquil, (and to a certain extent) haunting beats. As a result, the piece took a direction of a surreal, dream-like setting.

As for the process itself, the "unknown subject matter" and the iconic tree figure was designed and highly stylized in Adobe Illustrator. Afterwards, both elements were further edited and arranged in Adobe Photoshop. There is some emphasis of texture in this piece, even if the piece is digital in nature. Some are more apparent (for instance, the metallic texture on the iconic tree)... while some are less apparent (text from poetry that I wrote, used as texture!).

While editing, I ended up creating two more variant compositions, one of which was a complete accident:

Original Piece

Variant A: "Accident" Piece

Variant B: Trademark Monochromatic/Dichromatic Style

Variant A was completely accidental as I was fooling around with various layer effects. But I ended up liking it so much I decided to keep it, then made minor modifications to it, to add to its own uniqueness. The luminous aura in several elements of this piece vastly contributes to the initial "surreal, dream-like setting" intention.

Variant B is an homage to my apparent "style" of art and design, which leads to a pattern of monochromatic and dichromatic color schemes. It's also a fresh variation, considering the dramatic turn from warm orange/yellow colors, and transitioning into cool teal colors that dominate certain purple hues.

But just kidding, guys. I'm laughing hysterically because you actually READ all of that pseudo-smART stuff ('til this point!) and you probably believed all of it, too! I really just made 3 compositions because I'm the most indecisive person in the world! :P

The piece, of course, is open to interpretation. Overall, I'm pleased with how these things turned out, even though there are a still few things I'd nitpick about them.

------------

That's my contribution for now.

I have a few more things to post (some logos that I've created, perhaps some tattoo designs, and of course... SIGS!)

Community Artists, Assemble!

It’s beautiful, but I know Sarah and know that she loves trees, she I thought her being in it felt special and appropriate.

The only thing I don't get (and maybe it's not meant for me to get) is the title,
The Lord of Nightmares

I would expect Sarah to not be smiling; to have a frightened or numb face.

But, that’s the great thing about art it can be interpreted anyway. Maybe Sarah likes nightmares, maybe Sarah causes nightmares.

This piece gets you thinking.

Thanks for sharing!

Great idea Ukyo! Here is a wallpaper I made not too long ago. I love sci-fi, and making planets in Photoshop especially. So here is an untitled wallpaper I made. Everything you see is made from scratch (including the planet), except that I used some composite photographs of clouds to make some of the nebulae.

Wallpaper

I linked it because it is rather large. My goal with is was to create a planet that was visually very different than its surrondings, almost like this planet was hidden away within the nebula. I want to do more soon, hopefully while incorporating space stations and ships.

Thoughts?

I haven't really done anything creative for myself since then, but I've got some things I'd like to do - perhaps this weekend.

Phin I love it. I want to start playing civilization on it in fact. Very nice work.

Phin, I'm working on an asteroid-earth collision animation. For the background I'm just using an image I ripped off the net. I so need you to make me one (one big enough for camera moves.)

I'll post a render of my planet if my current render EVER ****ING GETS DONE!

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I'm relieved, I was shy and scurred to post stuff, but thanks to certain votes of confidence, I did it. Big Grin

Sarah - Glad you loved them! ~sweatdrop~

Pancocks - Where are YOUR stuff!? Post them here, plx, thx. I know you have RECENT stuff.

Brooke - Yeah, when I do stuff, my titles tend to be a bit on the ironic side. For instance, I did a humongous wall-sized piece for my senior year project for college, titled: "Live Life To The Fullest", which is a woman smoking a cigarette/blunt, haha. Perhaps I'll post that here, as well!

But with this piece, no irony is necessarily involved. I just thought the title sounded cool, I guess? Haha. Perhaps Sarah haunts our dreams, and she does it with a smile on her face. x_x

Joshie - I still owe you a sig. I guess I should work on yours again, but don't hold your breath, hahahahaha.

Zee - Thanks for the props, feels weird coming from a pro like you. Big Grin You def. have to post some!

Sigmastah Phinney - You have that whole "outer space composition" on lock down, WOW. It looks so real! And everything from scratch = absolutely amazing. For your next trick, you'll have to make spaceships/space stations from SCRATCH, too. Wink

Also can't wait to see what happens in a collaboration project between you and weaselboy!

Marcus - Love your DSes. But the DS ascii art on my sig is still the best. :P But in all seriousness, I THINK you should do a SERIES of these colored DSes. Do other colors (in addition to what you have so far), and arrange them in some specific manner. You can be like the modern day Andy Warhol!

~bump thread~ Post moar arts, everyone!

And 12 hours later when it's done rendering, this:

Did this earlier in the year, probably my first serious attempt at shadowing and caustics with mental ray. FG at high quality + GI + Caustics makes me a saaaad paaaanda when it comes to rendering.

Realistically, I could have faked almost all of that lighting and cut the intensive calculations down to the caustics... but I was experimenting, seeing exactly what it would take to set up a scene like this with mr.

I'll post my asteroid one later. Smile

Edit: I just realized it's hard to make out in the resized version, but those odd striations throughout the caustics are actually due to a subtle bump map I put on the decanter and glasses.

Very nice. I had to program similar images like that from scratch for my Computer Graphics Algorithms course this past spring.

Let's just say that ray tracing and space carving are way more complicated than I thought, and that I now have a huge appreciation for what Maya does.

I am In the process of starting a Comic book that I am entering into the ZUDA.com monthly Contest.
I have a guy doing the colors who Is part of the Far Cry community and also works for EA.

Anyway, while I was waiting for someone I had to meet today I started sketching up this creature that is in my book.
Its called a Roller.

The Face is used to hypnotise its prey with its eyes. Then It lifts its head showing its true face.
That is how it gets its fuel.

The comic is basically Buffy-vs-The Wizard of OZ.

I have been working on the story and characters for about 2 1/2 years.

Anyway, Enjoy and feel free to critique.

Oh and thats my version of a Munchkin driving him.

Kinda reminds me of some guys off of one of the many Wizard of Oz knock offs. Was a pretty dark one, if I recall. Not sure if that's what you were getting at with the Buffy-Oz mix, but there you go.

At any rate, pretty badass design, man. I love the way you worked that false face into the design. From the two views, it looks perfectly natural.

*thumbs up*

Man, Zee, you've got some nice character designs. It's a cool mixture of your influences, too. I like that fact that it really has your own style to it instead of looking really similar to another artist's.
