Sounds like a gay old time.

So my friend beat GTA4 and told me since he has beat it, the game refuses to load and gives red rings, but other games run fine on his 360. That does kinda of suck.

Stunt Jumping and the strangely cool feeling of shooting Flying Rats just never gets old. Seeing those feathers flying all over after a well place sniper bullet and the theatrical camera views while in the middle of a Stunt Jump is equaled by none!

I agree with all the 10 out of 10 reviews this game got. Thumbs Up

There's a lot that's right in Grand theft auto four but it's by no means the miraculous occurrence some of you are making it out to be. The protagonist of the game, Niko Bellic is in fact genuinely likable and they really have gone through a lot of pains with details in this game. From street sweepers to cell phone themes to hundreds of pages of internet, there's a lot of spit and polish on aspects of this game which game developers typically ignore.

That said it's a good game, I like it, and yes, it is pretty (The women in this series have gone from bizzare geometric clowns that look like they were colored with children's markers to honest to goodness hotties). But for all the attention that's been paid to peripheral elements the core aspects of gameplay seem to be afterthoughts towards the goal of creating the ultimate sandbox. For starters it's repetitive. Drive here, shoot that, chase this. I must have chased half a dozen motorbikes alone by now and shot my way out of a dozen scummy buildings where surprise, surprise the police show up once again. There aren't enough moments like in ivan the not so terrible where I get to decide the outcome of characters.

There are some SERIOUS problems with hit detection in shooting, compounded by the fact half the time my clean shots in which niko's body is sticking out for his enemies to easily hit plain as day are somehow hitting the wall two feet to the side of the gun barrel. It seems the bullets are coming out of a space above my legs and not where the gun is. Or as if some sort of invisible, one-way barrier had been erected while I wasn't paying attention that allowed bullets to hit me but didn't let my bullets go through. And it's not just bullets either, when this happens with grenades it's a bigger problem.

The cars operate like the brake pads were made of butter. Wow, this was intended so I could do hollywood style 180's. Why? Once you pull one off the car either flips end over end like a slinky or slides a football field beyond where it was supposed to go and invariably stops dead in the water, either ensuring the enemy plows into you with their car or ventilates the sitting duck. I like the friends, they're all interesting to listen to, but with only a handfull of mini games to maintain them it's starting to be a real chore. "Okay, we'll go bowling. Just understand I've been bowling ten times this week."

The friends are optional, I don't fault them on that too much. The story's good and they were smart, they kept it pretty short. It's not a ten out of ten game though. We've been getting a lot of games lately like Smash Brothers, Mass effect and now GTA that reviewers gushed over and swore they were the second coming of Christ. Good games, but not perfect]. GOOD. I take a ten out of ten to mean the game was damn near flawless. We got our hands on them and glaring flaws came up to light that reviewers missed somehow. Whether this is because of childlike enthusiasm or advertising dollars I can't really say. A ten out of ten in my opinion is a game everyone should OWN, one you're going to play for months. This is a very good game, but you could easily get away with just a rental.

As a personal beef, some of the sounds have played way, way too much. My radio stations restart every time I load a game and I can't really count the number of times somebody broke my legs with their car as I crossed at the lines, on my light then climbed out of their car and called me "hijo de puta". I understand that people in liberty city may be *******s but an occasional "oh my god are you okay?" Or "Let me call an ambulance" would certainly be welcome to cussing me out for being thicker than air then dragging me for a hundred paces like some grotesque hood ornament.

As another personal beef the aforementioned graphical splendor isn't consistent. "Consistent!?! You *******!" Well hold up and let me explain. Sometimes you'll walk up to a building with a fantastic electronic display, that looks like every light was meticulously hand choreographed, the glow around the lights, the sequencing, the dancing light they cast beneath are all very impressive. Then you look at the revolving door beneath that display and the texture on it looks like a 256 color grainy compuserve bitmap that's been stretched to 500 times it's normal size that's been lazily replastered all over the building.

Some DLC I'd like to see? A full miniature golf course and no miniature golf? How about letting me play my xbox live games in videogeddon? How about letting me make radio stations out of my playlists (complete with speech fade out), skip ahead in the stations or just turn the radio off without having to fiddle around in menus? No roll it on top? No duck races. You've got a chinatown folks, make the most of it.

You can turn the radio off by holding left or right on the dpad. Integrated custom soundtracks would be welcome.

I found the shotting to be generally excellent and very satisfying. By and Large, I thought the graphics were beautiful, from start to finish, I was regularly awed by the size, complexity and meticulous detail that Rockstar poured into every inch of the world. That isn't easy but they created a truly cohesive city. Not everything is perfect but considering the scope of what they are doing and the limitations of 360s medium, they performed well.

The rubbish cars are harder to drive, this just means that if you have to chase, you should find a car suitable for chasing. It's more realistic but overall, I didn't find it much of a problem.

Does GTAIV deserve a 10/10? I think it does it. 10/10 doesn't mean that it's perfect, that's impossible. It means that as a whole the game is so awesome, so exciting and so impressive that whatever flaws it has pale in comparison to the quality of the whole. For that I think GTA probaly deserves a 10 as much as any other game. Of course, MGS deserves 11.

I love the shooting mechanic. Very fluid. It was a short learning curve to adjust to the targeting method. After that. It is very fun to go to the gun shop and load up on ammo, then go on a cop killing spree. A good technic to tone down a 4 star or higher level while being chased, is to bunch them up behind you. 180 to a stop. Pop out of the car guns blazing. Take out 4 or 5 then pull a shotty out and start blazing the hood of the nearest cop car. The result is an ultra bright chain reaction of a cop/cop car clearing explosion that is mesmorizing to watch. Jump back in your ride and your free. If your in drivers seat view, you can even watch the scrap flying and the flames gushing from your rearview mirror as you drive off.

If they only had replays in this game. I would have already had some sweet footage of mass death and stunt jumps for the online album.

No. I see you're pretty buzzed though. I'm just being a little more realistic than gushing over feather effects and proclaiming I'll be playing this well into next year. (though DLC may prove me wrong after hiatus) I recommend the game- with reservations. I felt it only fair to offer a counterpoint. It's a critique, not criticism, the point is to highlight what's wrong. And needed in the face of statements such as:

"This game is truly an innovation for gaming in general."
Innovation? It's shenmue rolled into driver. Only it's missing the tomato convenience store girl so it's incomplete.

I could write three times the volume on what's right in gta. (Like people getting under awnings and archways to get out of the rain, and instances of increased social conscience from rockstar after being the Achilles heel of gaming's war with activists for far too long "hey buddy you're pretty drunk, you'd better press LeftB to call a taxi")but you guys and the whole rest of the internet have pretty much covered that so that'd be redundant. Besides, I didn't like seeing cheifredrabbit dogpiled when the game does legitimately have flaws. Shouting them down with "yeah but this was good" doesn't make them go away. It just makes you look like fanboys who've lost their objectivity.

Easy way to ditch any wanted rating you've got, make for the commuter train tracks far north in Bohan. When the tracks go into the subway the cops will lose you (and their chopper support) as you cruise through the underground railroad to safety. Say hello, one man army achievement.

I agree with this entire statement...until you get to MGS. I don't have a PS3.

hat you said about the graphics is exactly what i mean. If you compare this game to COD4 which has incredible graphics, you have to take into consideration that 95% of what you see in COD4 is a static image. It better look great.
Everthing in GTA4 and i mean everything is either moving or is affected by other effects in the game. Like the steam coming out of manholes or smoke blowing past a structure.
They have succeeded in creating a living breathing world where you can do anything.

Sure there are a lot of chase style sequences, but what do you want? Nikko to launch himself into the air like Superman to go after the bad guy?
He's a criminal. They use cars and guns and intimidation to complete their tasks.

I agree that this game deserves a 10 just because of the amazing amount of thought and application that has gone into this game. Is it the best game ever? No. But it comes closer than any other game (including other GTA games)ever released.
I do wish it had the putt-putt course and custom tracks also. I thought it was supposed to allow that anyway?

No game will ever please everyone. Sorry to hear you are not happy with it John.

I just re-read your rant. It stills sounds and reads very angry. I tried to see it different. It was hateful in several areas though.

This is a street life game. Alot of peeps won't warm up to that kind of lifestyle. It's unpleasant, rude, apalling, distastful, biligerant to name a few. Promotes about everything illegal under the sun. And is a dirty, dirty sandbox designed to keep you busy for a long time. That's exactly why I love it. Wink

There's nothing wrong with the driving. It seems that you happen to suck at it but that okay. This is the best shooting mechanic for any GTA game available. GTA games have always been raw and almost rag tag in some areas. IV offers the best controls out of any version. All the other GTA's scored 10, and high 9's so if IV is better than all of those, which it is then a 10 is a fine score. If your so unhappy with the game go trade it in or get rid of it. Everyone who likes the game will continue to do so regardless of what you think. I honestly don't think that your little post will sway the millions of people who purchased this game or who will purchase this game. Stepping off of soapbox now. Hammer

As far as people jumpinig on redrabbithead or whatever the name is I think you should take a chill pill. No one is jumping on anyone here. Maybe it appears that way to you. I suggest you take the stick out of your ass and relax. Anyway, if you don't think GTA is so great then play Mario Kart or something else.

The driving in this game is horrible.

I agree the game is GOOD but I don't think this game is a 10 out of 10. I blame it on hype and being from the GTA series. The same with Halo 3. I don't think Halo 3 was a 10 out of 10 but I think it was good.

That said.

I tried out death match last night and found it to be just plain horrible. It seems like a pretty weak after thought to the game.

I enjoy the game, I don't think it was the best ever. I'm not sure if it ranks in my top 10. It is an improvement over the previous game and because of those improvements I can play this game and enjoy it.

I just wish the driving mechanics could be improved with updates. It really needs some tweaking.

The breaking is just plain bad. I could hit my hand break and the regular breaks and it'll still take me two blocks to make the stop.

What I really do like when driving is when I have the ability to speed up and the 'blur effect' kicks in. I really enjoyed that. However, the handling is so weak I couldn't make a large easy turn and instead when flipping over the side of the highway. It was a funny moment but irritating.

However, I am willing to give multiplayer more cracks at it if anyone wants to play any style send me an invite.

The driving in this game is great.

I can do 180's, 360's, 360's off of roofs, ride on two wheels, weave in and out of traffic. With the hand break system I can make 90 degree turns, power slides, donuts, ect. The bikes are incredible to weave in and out of traffic, pop wheelies, cruise around. Honestly, you need to practice more. When you go around a turn at high speed you need to use the hand break, and normal break, while feathering the gas and turning the car all at once. It takes some monkey fingers but with a little practice you can be cruising around the city in no time.

Just because you suck at something doesn't mean it's bad. I'm not bashing you here or anything but you can really do some cool stuff with the cars and bikes. It just takes some practice. If you think the driving is bad in this game play forza on the 360 for a few days. You'll be running back to GTA like a fly to ****.

Oh god if R* changed the driving that would suck. It's just right the way it is.

*Maybe I'm a little crazy here but I just love jumping in cars and banging into **** left and right. That's always been a fun part of the GTA series. Grab a car and just drive like a maniac. It's a great release. The only tweak now is you can fly through the windshield in a head on crash. Even that is fun some times.

One thing about the Multiplayer that i have noticed in my online adventures, is that people seem to disregard the whole isolate the game to one zone thing. In deathmatch, that helps a lot. It puts all of the spawnpoints close together to keep the action fast.
Everytime i jump in a random game, the host has the entire gameworld open and i always spawn the furthest distance from the action that you can.

IGN made a good game suggestion. They suggested setting the game in the Prison which is on one of the small islands. Then put all weapons to melee and have a Prison Riot. Hell yeah.

I have yet to pilot a Helicopter. I would like to but i never seem to find them when online.

I was playing yesterday and i found this cool jump that goes over the freeway. I took it but my bike didn't make it because i had to avoid a car near the jump. So i landed on the freeway sign structure, rode along it and dropped onto the roof of a semi which took me all the way to the Navy yard.
That was pretty cool.

Zee, there's a race mode that uses helicopters; they're pretty difficult to get the hang of. Still quite a fun mode to play!
