The one MLG event I attended in Toronto was really dull. I had fun because I was hanging out with some friends at the crappy convention that was attached to it but I was hanging around the MLG section before they got there & it was incredibly boring.

Well, I'm here in Orlando! I might have an out of state job by the time the event is happening, but even if I do I'll come back for it.

People still go to MLG? I had hoped people would've realized by now that MLG is robbing kids of their money by perpetuating the delusion that they can play video games for a living.

No kidding. I was actually glad there was a convention to wander around. |

Agreed...If you love games and want to make a living on it...get in the industry and help make them! |

MLG is extremely dull if you're no competing. You'd have more fun watching paint dry, which is pretty mildly entertaining.

If I still lived in Jacksonville I'd go... My parents still live there, maybe I'll try and get a flight back and drive down for a day or something. We'll see

The top Halo pros make six figures. It's certainly possible, you just have to be good enough. Do you fault the NFL or the NBA for perpetuating the delusion that kids can become millionaires? Yes, it's very hard and very few people can do it. Doesn't mean it's impossible nor that the league shouldn't advertise itself. And yes spectating at an MLG event without a very detailed knowledge of a pro-level game is incredibly boring. But it's one of the best experiences you'll ever have if you're competing. It's the reason why so many people do it. |

The NFL and NBA (and every other real pro sport for that matter) unions for the players. Those sports also have high school and collegiate programs that prepare kids for the pros. Those sports have drafts and an organized team system, with salary caps to keep some sort of balance and fairness to their leagues. MLG has none of this. My biggest problem is that the amount of money these kids spend to go to events compared to money they can actually win is jaw-dropping. Sure, Halo 3 prizes are a bit more generous, but the money for the other games is laughable. Hell, they cut the Rainbow Six prize money so much between '07 and '08 that teams simply stopped showing up because it wasn't worth the trouble. Teams that played Rainbow in '08 couldn't even make their money back on travel, board and entry fee unless they took first place! I'm not saying people don't go just for fun. If you have that kind of scratch to spend on fun every month, more power to you. But a lot of those kids don't go just for fun - they think they can make it. Maybe a small percentage of them will, but how many of them are blowing hard earned money on a pipe dream? Throwing away a real future for this supposed "profession". The profit MLG is making off of these kids is obscene. I worked for GameBattles for almost 5 years (and recently got asked to come back), I interviewed for a spot with MLG, and I coached XBLB at Meadowlands '07. I like the idea of MLG, but I don't like the way they're growing right now. I don't like the way they advertise themselves as a "sport" or professional league when they are not either. ------------ | GameDibs.com | Dibcast | Twitter | Facebook | Steam | A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere |

It took 15 years for the NBA to have a real players union. It took 42 years for the NFL to get a players union. MLG has been holding major tournaments for about 5 years now. It's still in it's infancy. They're doing a lot of things right, whether some people benefit from it or not. You don't have to tell me about their support of Rainbow. I was a RSV pro and I know all too well we were the red-headed step children of MLG. But MLG is not why there was no money. It was Ubisoft that put up the prize money for Rainbow Six, not MLG. It doesn't make fiscal sense to support a game like Rainbow Six anyways. It's not popular enough to draw the amount of people needed for a big tournament. MLG doesn't make jack squat on the team passes. They make it from their advertising sales. So, unfortunately, their whole business model is dictated by marketing and advertising. Not on the games. |

MLG just needs to take bigger strides in further legitimizing the circuit. Anyway you slice it, they are profiting off of kids chasing a career in professional gaming.
They may be taking baby steps, but Modern Warfare 2 is going to be a big test for them, because it has the potential to be as big as Halo. ------------ | GameDibs.com | Dibcast | Twitter | Facebook | Steam | A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere |
