Regardless of how we all feel about how he's doing as our president domestically, the emphasis of the nobel peace prize win was on what he's was doing in the international community at the time of nomination.

Yup, I agree. And it would have looked pretty rude to the international community to turn that down. Also, he's donating the money to charity just in case someone was wondering. |

Unless serial killerism becomes a religion. That would scare me. Blink

If it was so good or so well written to win an award I should have heard about it as much as I heard about Dan Browns "The Lost Symbol". Well F3NOM I believe you are reffering to the Pulitzer Prize. It awards for literary success. The last book that won it was -The Road- IT is an outstanding and emotional book that will soon be released as a major motion picture starring Viggo Mortinson. The Author of this book also wrote another great book that was turned into a little film you may have heard of. I hear it won a bunch of awards also Its called -No Country for old men- I think it won best picture. Best supporting actor, Best screenplay and best director. I think it got a couple more also. Literary prizes are very important. Reading and writing is still our primary source of getting new ideas across and when someone can tell a story to such a level that it sets them apart from all other writers, They deserve the notice. |

I understand. When you put it that way it makes more sense. I just don't like books. |

Errr I edited when I ment to quote before gurrr.... anyways, nomonies for the prize is to be submitted by Feb 1st. So what did Obama do in his first 11 days in being a president?
I love what I found on Yahoo. This is what he did the first 11 days of office: "• Won approval of the second $350 billion *before* taking office. Great another round of money for something that didn't work the first time. • VP Biden already made his first foreign trip *before* taking office. Biden is seen as ajoke to most foreign leaders. • Ordered the closing of the prison at Guantanamo Bay, with 16 retired generals and admirals standing behind him in support. Gave himself 1 year to place some of the most dangerous people in the world. Had no set plan of action how to do it but did it anyway. Good leadership there. • Ordered a pay freeze of his top staff. A staff that are not due for a raise for the next two years. Oh boy what an incredibly gratios move to take money away from those who weren't gonna get some. • Ordered stricter controls on lobbyists in government. Then hires a lobbyist to run the defense department and allows other lobbyist to join his staff. Change we can believe in. • Ordered compliance with the Freedom of Information Act. You cannot order compliance as it is implied. It is the equivalent of telling America that he orders them to quit smoking pot. • Confined interrogation techniques to those in the Army Field Manual For military personnel only. CIA agents may still use advanced techniques. • Ordered a review of auto emissions standards. Lets all meet California's standard which will put the auto makers out of business. I know let the politicians design cars from now on. That should workout great. • Met with GOP leaders of both Houses of Congress to improve the stimulus package. Upon hearing their ideas he told them "I won and will do it my way" • Did an interview with Al Arabiya TV, improving our reputation in the Arab/Muslim world. Basically told the world that America is the problem and we will try to make up for it. • Talked to every leader in the Middle East. So did Bush. • Named George Mitchell special envoy to the Middle East. Mitchell is already on the scene. Wow we sent another person to talk to the terrorists and get no where. What do you tell some one who wants to destroy Israel and the US? • Got most of his cabinet confirmed. Congrats got two tax evaders and a man who pardoned domestic terrorist confirmed. Not to mention a woman who has conflicts of interest in her appointment. • Made family planning advice more available to women in Africa. American taxpayer money for Abortions in Africa. • Met with top business leaders, who endorsed his stimulus plan. Half of the group approved his plan the other half were not as enamored by his radiance. • Geithner put limits on lobbying from bank who receive TARP money (something Paulson could have easily done.) Again a plan that has failed, now with more oversight. • Signed equal pay legislation A bill that pays back trial lawyers for their help in getting him elected. Also puts no limit on how far back people can go to contest pay. • Condemned Wall Street bonuses An overstepping act considering that his people in the house and senate received millions in "bonuses" but no one says a word. • Ordered federal contractors to offer jobs to current workers when contracts change, and made it more difficult for federal contractors to discourage union activities. Another payback to strengthen unions in America. Organized labor, the most corrupt group in America. • Released federal aid to fix power outages. Like any other president would have done anything different. • Provided health-care to 4 million poor children. 4 million poor children whose parents make as much as 95k per year. Those poor kids. • Created a Middle Class Task Force, led by Joe Biden The man who said that paying more taxes is patriotic. Great leader." It wasn't written by me. But if you did more research off that you would see the scandles that were in the news about Congress and Senate members taking kick backs and bribes from lobbyists for votes. This is not the first time I've seen this point. And while I do agree it was given way to early, I must point out the committee does not decide until AFTER the nomination deadline. So, technically, they could have made their final decision a week before the announcement. http://nobelpeaceprize.org/en_...e/selection-process/ Just sayin'. |

Iraq can't be left alone anymore unless people want it to become a haven for black market arms trade, Civil violence, and possible new front extremist activities. That much should be quite evident. Unless Obama can muster up assistance from the UN for the deployment of a long term peacekeeping force in the region, he shouldn't plan a quick withdrawl.

@PMS BangBang;
I won't dispute most of the things you wrote. They are true but delivered without proper context. I will just grab a hold of one controversial thing in your post. "It is patriotic to pay tax's" Now, admittedly nobody likes paying tax's. But lets be realistic here. The Federal Government and State Governments as well cannot operate without Tax dollars. The Governments cannot pay for Policemen, Firemen, paved roads, Public Schools, homeless shelters,Community organizers and a virtual book full of things that without taxs to support them would make this country as livable and as politically stable as Nigeria. Or any third world nation you wish to put in place. So YES. It is patriotic to pay taxs. Because by doing so, you are helping to support the country that allows you so much. And you help your fellow citizens out when they are unable to help themselves. Think about it. Walk down the wrong street and you could be one of those people in need of tax dollars to survive. Now Taxation is in many ways out of Control and we are overtaxed in many ways. But the country as you know it would cease to exist without taxs. You don't want that to happen. Ok I will grab one more point. I would like you to name the members of Congress and the Senate who you claim received millions of dollars in bonuses last year. I say this because it is Illegal for them to accept money from Lobbyists that goes directly to them in return for favorable treatment on a bill. They would basically be accepting a bribe. So lets get them under investigation like they are doing to Representative Rangle currently. Obama recieved the prize for what it is hoped that he will accomplish. This has been done before. When Obama first came onto the scene on the world stage during the campaign, he inspired the nations of the world. He presented America in a humble way (what you mentioned of his middle East Interview) Because quite honestly we had just come out of 8 years of Unilateral governance. We Isolated ourselves from the rest of the world all while putting our hands deeply into every cookie jar. If you want me to go on just let me know. |

Zee: Remember when I wrote this?
I said it was on yahoo. I did not write the list which is why it was in quotes, but if you were to actually research it more and you did pay more attention from when he was a senator, it was in the news quite often of lobbyist bribing members of the senate and congress to get votes. Also, it isn't patriotic when you, or anyone in this country, is paying taxes to fully support someone else mishaps. I do not mind paying taxes for police, (which hardly do their job) or public school teachers (Which my child doesn't attend because teachers don't teach)or any other public service job. I do have a problem paying taxes so people who refuse to get a job and keep popping out kids that they can't support can live off welfare and medicade. Especially when I have to pay taxes on top of that, and pay for my own daughter health insurance because I apparently make too much money for her to be covered. While all in all on the other side of town there is a job less guy waiting to cash his welfare check while he is also working on his 6th kid because he can't spend 5$ on a box of condoms or keep his **** in his pants. So since when its it obligation or patriotic to pay for other peoples mistakes and mis-fortunes when we are all trying to get our own lives together and bills paid and just simply live because the economy is horrible and we can't even get a break when we are the working class? Because even when I was one of those people in need and walking down that damn street, I got denied when I had nothing. And that is a whole story in itself, but believe me, paying more taxes won't help those in real need, it will continue to support the low lives who have been living off the government for years. |

There are some bad muslims and some good ones. I can't judge them all based off the crazy murderers. I'm a Christian, and I'd sure hate to think that everyone that called themselves a Christian represented me as well. There's some pretty psycho ones out there that I don't want any part of.. @PMSBangBang. Preach it, sister! I completely agree with you. |

There's been a lot of talk about how an america more active in world politics has reignited faith in diplomatic, ie peaceful, processes and that our involvement has created faith they can work. It's also probably meant as a rebuke to the mostly xenophobic and isolationist foreign policies of president bush, who's interactions with the outside world mostly consisted of insults, attacks, confusion and plugging his fingers in his ears and going "la la la la". Then realizing he was ignoring problems at home while his fingers were in said ears.
You didn't write it but you did submit it for appreciation. If you're going to try to use it for support you must also answer for it's failings. If you could link us something on these corrupt senators it would be appreciated. You sure seem to have a major beef with the poor. Who aren't really even the worst benefactors of government intervention. If I were going to go off on a ti-rade it would be against the rich, who are free to invest and manipulate the economy irresponsibly, with a government saftey net in place. Keeping the reward and not accepting the risk. As for the poor there is a 60 month hard limit on government benefits. Many states have shorter limits. To recive benefits beyond a few months it must be shown that you are actively seeking work, so the number of people "living off the government for years" is actually relatively low and even if someone were doing so they couldn't do so indefinitely. For that matter, the amount of aid that the government gives per each one of those six children is incredibly low. There was a recent npr study where they attempted to live on it and were forced to eat almost nothing but oatmeal and peanut butter for the month. It is simply not sustainable and certainly not luxurious.
In the end you must pay for other people's misfortunes because we are all tied together one way or another. Asides from the moral, service and economic imperatives (which i'll elaborate on if you desire) there is a question of governmental stability and order. People who feel forgotten and ignored by their government become disenfranchised and angry. When people feel hopeless that frustration can bubble up with desperation and result in violence. Well fare, social security and other new deal programs show that society still cares even for those at the bottom and breed a measure of loyalty and faith in people who might otherwise see the system as their opressor and enemy. If you want to see an america as volatile as a third world country, by all means you are free to isolate and estrange the poor. "I often quote myself. It adds spice to my conversation." --George Bernard Shaw |

Its always an obligation for people to give money to the government. Regardless of the reason in which money is being taken from you affects you or not.

here you go
It isn't a beef with the poor, it is stating the obvious problems within the system. Why go after the rich? People have tried that for years, and they get taxed more which they don't care since they have the money for that, and they also buy in to the political system to get their way. The issue with the economy is because EVERYONE is poor now, people can hardly survive, because the system is soo run down we are borrowing money from ourselves.
I lived off unemployment for over 3 years, thanks to the system, and I had to supply contacts for applying for jobs every week. $245.00 a week doesn't pay my bills let alone my living expenses. And I did not "claim" that the people living off welfare and off the government was living in luxury. they get money to survive, more then I did on unemployment. They receive food stamps, WIC, and free medical care. They live better then I do with a job. So is that a great system for you? That I have to work, pay MORE taxes, provide my own health care, and pay my increased living expenses, while someone who isn't actively looking for a job can get welfare, food stamps, WIC, living support, transportation support, and many other things offered through different states. And all the wile all they are doing is becoming more of a low life, spreading their seed and adding more people to the welfare system that WE all have to support because they can't do it themselves. Ohhh yeah great system.
I did not claim I was angry either, nor that America is a third world country. The fact is, this country is far from perfect, and Obama did not deserve this award because he can't even fix the little problems in this country. Don't get me wrong, he isn't as bad as Bush, but he is slowly picking up where he left off. And I am greatful for having Social Security, especially for my daughter who receives survivor benefits since her father died. Granted it could be more, but I can't complain because at least she gets something. And especially with the economical downfall they have uped the monthly benefit amount. So don't get me wrong, I can still appreciate the ****ty things this country has to offer but I will never see it as patriotic to pay for someone elses mistakes and support other people financially when I am trying to raise my own family. |

If you're really lucky and ask me about the right period of his term or specific event, I'd agree with you. Also if I've been drinking, and then it likely won't matter what time period/event, but that's... that's an even different topic, also. IMO, it's really really hard to either completely dislike someone or completely love 'em. Of course, with as much sucking up as they do to get into their seat, I suppose that's not surprising. |
