According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.

Which is why it is a joke knowing how the UN peacekeeping force is taken from armies of individual nations and Lester Bowles Pearson won the award for creating the idea of a peacekeeping force.

Also are Americans really scared of Muslims that much? Haha!

Do I scare you guys? Frown Yes I am a Muslim and the voice of the ever growing moderate Muslim Majority. We need support from everyone if we are to push for much needed change and silence the extremists for good. Canadian Muslims are doing their part

@Ninja; The Atomic bomb ended the war. remember, we were fighting Japan still after the defeat of the Nazi's
Also Angelusc already pointed out the proper reason for why the prize was created.

Arafat got it because he went from being a Terrorist leader to a moderate leaning Leader on the world Stage and actually came close to a peace agreement with Isreal.

regarding when the process of voting took place, I would say that that puts it right around the time of his first big speech in Egypt.
The world saw him as trying to rebuild diplomacy between all nations.

@Everyone; Thanks for the kind words. I love politics and try hard to not **** people off.
For a guy known as EVIL, I guess I am pretty diplomatic.

@LoversHeart; I don't know if it is so much that people are scared of Muslims so much as people are only exposed to a certain aspect of your religion, and nobody of merit from the Muslim faith is coming foreward to decry what the extremists are doing.
Its hard enough to get Muslims to actually make an effort to fight against the extremists since according to Muslim law the extremists are in the right for declaring Jiihad.

This really depresses me since it undermines the efforts made by the moderate community to curve extremism in all its forms. My husband and I along with the moderates have been pushing for an all out ban on burkas and we finally have made a breakthrough and we just might succeed in doing so. I don't want the moderates to be discouraged with un-needed backlash against them. It might surprise you but me and my husband probably hate the extremists more then the west does since we have suffered through their insanity more than anyone else.

The Muslim law or Jihad has never called upon the death of civilians. Every extremist attack on forigen personals was aimed primarily at civilians. Jihandist Extremists aren't Muslims. They are breaking the edict themselves.

I have a lot of thoughts on the matter, but I'm out the door to work so I need make it brief for now.

A friend of mine summed it up best when he said "You know you're a bad president when your successor wins the Nobel Peace Prize for basically not being you."

Regardless of why he won the award, it's causing my conservative friends great distress, and that fills me with joy.

Wait, what?

How can you be half-Muslim? It's a religion, not an ethnic group.

He has been working in the background to end Nuclear proliferation worldwide and has already instructed the US to begin dismantling Warheads.
so that might have something to do with it.

He has also recently formed a coalition to prevent Iran from getting Nuclear power, and to open their doors to Inspectors in their secret facility.
In doing this he has begun to repair the bonds we used to share with other Nations that were destroyed by the last Administration.

He has worked very hard so far to secure peace with Israel and the Palestinian's.

The economy IS on the upswing. The latest unemployment numbers were the lowest in over a year.
1/2 a million people were saved from foreclosure so far because of him.
Predatory Lenders who helped create this mess are now open to lawsuits which are pouring in.

Job creation is slow. the money from the TARP and bailouts has only been released in small amounts.

I think our instant gratification society needs to return to reality and realize that fixing this mess is going to take years. Not weeks. Not months. Years.

So he actually has accomplished more than people give him credit for but he still doesn't deserve the prize.
Yet.

On a side note.

He is not a Muslim. this has been proven. Repeatedly.
What is going on between Dem's and GOP has nothing to do with the Nobel consideration. The GOP do this crap every time they are out of power.

They are losing ground now because all of the Health care fiasco is finally blowing up in their faces.

Regarding the fact that the Nobel prize is named after the man who created Dynamite; It was a Bomb that ended WW2 and brought about peace.

Two things to add to your post:

1)IMO, it's too early to attribute the current bull market to any entity at the time. I will say the measures Obama has supported have definitely helped (creating jobs, restricting how much Geithner can speak, etc., keeping Bernanke... surprisingly) but some of the rally has been on good news from institutions that either didn't take any of the bailout funds, or got them from the first package. So, personally, I'd say that one is still up in the air, especially since the long-term financial outlook for the states could lead to a long-term recovery once investors get over the fact the markets are, you know, actually rising (which I in no way blame the long term outlook solely on Obama's budget proposal, since, as I think it was you pointed out in another thread, wars do that to countries.) Anyway, yeah, imo that's one aspect that I think won't be able to be clearly called until at least next year.

Anyway, I'm starting to ramble, so:
2) Considering what he's got done abroad, I think the people who say he hasn't done anything need to bear in mind that a lot of the inaction in the U.S. is because of party politics. There's only a limited amount he can do before Congress needs to step in to pass laws, and right now Congress has demonstrated a portion of its members are content to only represent the extremes of their respective parties. So part of "him not doing anything," is because his job function does not facilitate him doing anything more for certain laws than being a cheerleader until the bill gets to his desk.

While I disagree with some of his policies, and think the Nobel was given too early in his presidency, I really can't help but feel like it was an appropriate nomination and serious consideration. Like I said, it would have made more sense to me if they waited a year, but he hasn't done nothing. Far from it. And love him or hate him, agree or disagree with his methods, you can't ignore that he has been making huge efforts to attempt to repair the U.S.'s reputation and to help bring the biggest threats to peace under international pressure.

Okay, yeah, that's my one serious post for the day, and you prompted it, Zee. Here's another +5 Internets points. Razz

I like you. Glomp

I'm not afraid of muslims, or any religion, for that matter. I'm a Christian, but I respect beliefs of different kinds. None particularly scare me.

Unless serial killerism becomes a religion. That would scare me. Blink

I agree. I've been reading the paper every morning about different people receiving different awards & yesterday I came across one person who one a prize (can't remember which one) because the wrote a book. Literature prizes are dumb. If it was so good or so well written to win an award I should have heard about it as much as I heard about Dan Browns "The Lost Symbol".

May as well give a prize to the frag dolls or fatal1ty for playing games. . . . really good. IDK makes as much sense as giving an award to someone who wrote a 'good'? book. Or give an award to the people who created or we're the first to get H1N1 contracted to them. Quickest freakout ever.

Free tip: "What's good" and "what the masses like because TV pushes it at them" rarely coincide; case in point, Dan "I have no idea how to do research" Brown.

I think that's 20+ points for zeeEVIL AND tibbsy. Pretty much said everything I was thinking. It's easy to say "Well, he hasn't done much yet" or "He got it because he was the first African American president" however, we don't know all the work that he's put in behind the scenes and zeeEVIL stated just a few items he has accomplished in just a short period.

And he revitalized political and community action in younger people and minorities. Plus, we look a little less like idiots to the rest of the world.

Plus, he has a ton of work to do and much to fix from previous administrations so a little carrot doesn't hurt (Even though he was humble enough to say he didn't deserve it but not on a righteous high horse to reject the prize). It's not like any of us were slated to get the Nobel Prize lol. I don't see the big deal.

Thanks for the awesome sig Phin!
