Personally, I don't think he should have won the Nobel Prize. He hasn't done anything yet to receive it except being the first African American president.

As a friend summed up on Twitter: Obama recieves Nobel Peace Prize... Not for anything he has done but in expectation of what he will do. Welcome to America

Don't get me wrong- I am hoping that great things are to come from Obama but shouldn't he already have accomplished them to receive the Nobel Peace Prize?

Please keep an open mind in this topic and try to sustain a level of maturity when posting. Respect each others view like adults.

Let the debate begin...

He hasn't done anything special besides being the first Black President.

Personally don't think he should have received it. He hasn't really done anything in his first year yet, mostly because of the fighting between both parties. Nothing he has done really screams out Nobel Peace Prize worthy to me. It seems to me, like your friend, he is only getting it because of what he promises. I do hope some of his promises do become reality but I think he should have some type of major accomplishment before receiving it.

I was happy to see that Obama felt that he "didn't deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize". but with that I think he should have denied acceptance altogether, not that he doesn't deserve it, but because no one should accept prizes for doing "Just" things if it was done to be "Just".

I think the prize itself defeats the purpose of the meaning of the action.

The Nobel peace prize is a bit of a joke. I mean come on. They gave it to Yasser Arafat.

Besides, Alfred Nobel was an arms manufacturer and the inventor of dynamite. I'm not saying that makes him a bad person or anything but its kinda stupid to have a peace prize named after a bomb maker don't you think?

I love irony. :P

I agree with you, Faith. He really hasn't done anything to deserve it. Sure, it's great to see our nation is accepting diversity, such as races, into authoritative positions, such as president; however, should he have received the peace prize because of his race? Absolutely not. That in itself is racist.

So far it seems like Obama has been some kind of celebrity. I'm ready to see him act like a President for a change. I didn't vote for him, nor did I want him to be our president, but being that he is, I would like to support him. But so far he really hasn't done anything for me to support.

""Yo Obama, I'm happy for you and Imma let you finish but Nelson Mandela had one of the best Nobel Peace Prizes of allll time. OF ALL TIME!!""

lol anyways, I am not anti Obama, but thinking about how much time has past, he really hasn't done anything but go on vacations, go to the movies, and out to eat.... ohh and a few appearences on the late night shows. He has made so many promises but nothing has been done, especially with the economy. Makes me start to wonder.

And I see nothing worthy of him getting the Nobel Peace Prize. Just because he is the first half African American/Muslim doesn't mean he deserves it. Hell, Angelina Jolie has done more then he has. lol.

I think it's a bit of an interesting situation. He's new to the presidency, and as such he hasn't done much. It's been less than a year.

Nominations have to go in back in Feb. so he was nominated way earlier into his new job.

So while the home front is a pretty blank slate he's done a lot for the USA as far as fixing diplomatic relations abroad. So while he hasn't physically done anything yet, the Judges said it was a unanimous decision. That, in and of itself, is actually quite an accomplishment. If the world somehow feels he's changed the way the US is, and their feelings are changing towards us, then he DID do something. He's obviously done SOMETHING to make the committee feel he was worthy of not only a nomination, but the win. The rest of the world doesn't view race like we do in the states (did you see the Australian Jackson 5 tribute?), so I don't think he won because of his race. The decision isn't made here, it's made in Europe.

Albert Einstein won the Nobel Prize for the photoelectric effect, but in all honesty Albert Einstein didn't do many experiments. He did a lot if thinking and theoretical work. Did he DO anything? Note: I am NOT comparing Obama to Albert Einstein in any other way than the fact that they both won Nobel prizes.

I'm not saying I believe Obama deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, I think it's strange that he won so early on and being so new. What I am saying though, is how do you define 'accomplishing something?' He's had some profound effect on the nations and people of the rest of the world, otherwise the International group wouldn't have unanimously voted him as the recipient.

I feel that while he has been making efforts to promote certain aspects of peace since being in office, Its a bit early to award him this prize.

He has been working in the background to end Nuclear proliferation worldwide and has already instructed the US to begin dismantling Warheads.
so that might have something to do with it.

He has also recently formed a coalition to prevent Iran from getting Nuclear power, and to open their doors to Inspectors in their secret facility.
In doing this he has begun to repair the bonds we used to share with other Nations that were destroyed by the last Administration.

He has worked very hard so far to secure peace with Israel and the Palestinian's.

The economy IS on the upswing. The latest unemployment numbers were the lowest in over a year.
1/2 a million people were saved from foreclosure so far because of him.
Predatory Lenders who helped create this mess are now open to lawsuits which are pouring in.

Job creation is slow. the money from the TARP and bailouts has only been released in small amounts.

I think our instant gratification society needs to return to reality and realize that fixing this mess is going to take years. Not weeks. Not months. Years.

So he actually has accomplished more than people give him credit for but he still doesn't deserve the prize.
Yet.

On a side note.

He is not a Muslim. this has been proven. Repeatedly.
What is going on between Dem's and GOP has nothing to do with the Nobel consideration. The GOP do this crap every time they are out of power.

They are losing ground now because all of the Health care fiasco is finally blowing up in their faces.

Regarding the fact that the Nobel prize is named after the man who created Dynamite; It was a Bomb that ended WW2 and brought about peace.

Thank you for posting this Zee. I wanted to weigh in on certain comments - but I was going to do so in a much less tactful manner. Wink

The only thing Obama's done is become the first black president, and that doesn't warrant a Nobel Peace Prize. You have to do something truly extraordinary (in every sense of the word) to even be considered for this type of award. Even Gandhi didn't receive this sort of recognition for his philanthropy...

At the time Arafat got it, he received it with Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin of Israel as a co credit for one of the few viable at the time options for peace in the holy land before all the violence spiraled. And Alfred Nobel invented dynamite but he invented the prize to offset his lifes work of inventing destructive forces.

*edit*The general criteria for winning the peace prize is:

According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.

So going off that, a person can make a strong argument for why Obama was nominated, regardless of what he does domestically or whether or not his goals (noble or party driven) succeed.

Also, boobies. That is all.

Well, I think Mr. Obama has done a lot with regards to diplomacy abroad and seeking to draw down conflicts etc, but the fact is the selection for winning the Nobel Peace Prize happened two weeks after he was elected. It seems more to me that he won it based on expectations vice what has actually been done. He probably would have been a pretty sound choice for next year, because just like evil said, he's done a lot, but that was all after the selection. Either way I am glad he won - Go USA! **waves flag**

STOP IT. THIS IS YOUR PAIN. THIS IS YOUR BURNING HAND. IT'S RIGHT HERE.
