I am generally a very healthy person. My husband and I have been together for 6 years and neither one of us has gotten more than a cold since we started dating. BUT, we do have a baby. And the H1N1 recently killed a 12 year old girl down the road from me. I'm not taking any chances with my baby, so all 3 of us got vaccinated for the seasonal AND the H1N1 earlier this month.

Guess what, guys? I'm OK. My husband is OK, and my daughter is OK. I think if youre at a risk of getting really sick and passing it to other people, its silly not to protect yourself and the people around you. I mean, every time you get in your car you have a chance of getting killed... but you do it anyway, don't you?

Chances are, if you get the vaccine, you'll be OK too.

I frag on the first date.

Wow. That is confusing. Generally there's only a couple ways to become diabetic. Usually you're almost born with it. Usually caused by a weak or damaged pancreas which is the juvenile form (known as Type 1 Diabetes...which I have). Than the second form is adult diabetes (Type 2), which can be caused by a number of things. Usually a weak pancreas which is more common in overweight people.

Did you find out how the shot caused it? I've read about how the pancreas works. Did something get into her blood that somehow damaged her's? If it attacked it, it could have caused it to stop producing digestive enzymes (basically insulin) which would cause her to need insulin. That is if she takes insulin injections. Type 2 usually doesn't need direct insulin dosages to control it.

Sorry, just curious. That's a very unusual way to get it.

Yeah. Basically what happened was:

My dad's side of the family has the type 1 passed around and I guess my sister had the gene. Anyways, long story short, the shot initiated it and a couple weeks later she was in the hospital with Type 1 Diabetes. Now, with that said, yes it was in her system and something else could have eventually triggered it (I guess how it works with Type 1 since it is passed through genes/heredity, the person has it in their system and something can trigger it or it may never occur) and what triggered it with my sister was the hepatitis set of shots. I guess there are a few doctors around the U.S. trying to spread this news because Type 1 has been occurring much more frequently over the last decade or so and they believe this is why.

One of my parents friends also got Type 1 a week after he got his hepatitis shot before he went on a cruise for his honeymoon. This occurs more often then you think. Pretty crazy.

I had to get the seasonal flu shots when I was in the military. Always felt run down and awful for about a week afterwards and others came down with the flu. The funny thing is, even before joining the military and after getting out, I have only had the flu once and that was when I was about 12 years old. I do not get a shot and never get the flu.

Now bronchitis is a different story, I get it once a year it seems. Blink

I feel sorry for this young lady. She had goals for her life and now can barely stand.

What I love about the video are the comments. First there are the people who insist it can't be real. But when I was studying psych there were all kinds of strange and poorly understood ailments mentioned, like people who can't seem to talk at all unless they sing. Granted I'll reserve some judgement until a more credible newssource than inside edition picks up the story, but to insist that "It can't possibly be real" only belies their ignorance.

Secondly, what is with people who feel the need to say something like "and she was so pretty too" and "Such a shame, such a beautiful girl". Like it would be completely fine if it happened to a total butterface right? "Too bad it didn't happen to some dude who lost half his face to cancer, he's used to funny looks" "I'd sleep that much better at night, knowing that somebody out there still had it all." I dunno, it just seems strange to me when people seem to think it's a worse tragedy that somebody with the world at their finger tips suddenly has a cross on their shoulder. What's it matter either way? Why point that out? For what it's worth though I always feel worse when the guy nobody thought could sink any lower or lose anymore winds up taking another blow from planet earth. I mean at least when something bad happens to a beautiful, famous or wealthy person they got to enjoy that for a while.

But you know, last point. Get your flu shot if you can. Seriously, getting other people sick, and by domino effect killing a few old people and babies, because you insisted on wearing a tin foil hat is inconsiderate at best. Unless like in Zee's case there's some immediate health risk to somebody you know.

This is pretty much what I was feeling; the shallow reactions to stuff like this rub me the wrong way.

This is exactly how it was and is for me.

I eat right and work out which helps keep the immunity level up.

@tibbsy; My wife had Breast Cancer and she had to take radiation treatment for a while. She is now on the final year of this post treatment drug called Tomoxafin. She has been on that for over 4 years.

Honestly I think half of the time when we get sick it is self induced. Meaning that the level of stress we put ourselves under throws our bodies out of whack and makes us susceptable.

@Ghengis John; Mel Tillis is a famous country singer who has a beautiful singing voice. But when he talks normally he stutters like a scratched record.

If you are in the higher risk group of old people and small children, then you should definitely get the shots.

I will probably get the H1N1 shot when it is available here.

First off... YouTube comments, as stupid as ever.

But that's horrible... My mom's a pharmacy assistant, and she's never made me get a flu shot or any other shot. When she said I wouldn't be getting the meningitis vaccine, and I asked her why, she said it was because I didn't really need it. I do get a cold every year when flu season goes around, but not as much as my friends who get the shot seem to do.
As for the H1N1 vaccine... H1N1 is going around like crazy here in SW Ontario: a month ago a girl at my school had it, a girl at my friend's driver's ed now has it, and two kids at my sister's elementary school now have it. Fortunately, no one's died, as far as I know. However, I won't be getting the shot: I'm young and healthy, so I think have a pretty good chance.
However, I have gotten tonsillitis twice in the past two years, but doctors now refuse to remove them. Something about when you tonsils inflame it shows something's wrong in your body, so they can treat that too. I'm not sure about all the details, but it's horribly painful, and not fun. Now every time my throat's sore I'm terrified tonsillitis is coming back.:/

Yea my school apparently has 8 people actually diagnosed with swine flu so im alittle nervous myself, but can someone explain to me what the big deal with swine flu is. Is it REALLY that bad? i also kinda thought that it was just because they dont know much about it that theyre taking procautions. Is it any worse than the regular flu?

Swine influenza or H1N1 is a new strain of the influenza virus. Its a mutated strain with a new protien coat so your white blood cells and antibodies cannot identify this new strain easily. The preliminary symptoms are the same as the flu but H1N1 patients have a rapid declination into respiratory problems. People are worried about an H1N1 pandamic because the regular influenza pandamic that struck Europe during 1918 was deadly and since a vaccine wasn't avalible then a lot of people died.

Ohh, sir, you keep her company and keep her moral up. Also my mum had recently a mammography test, she had some tumors in her breasts (I hope there are no 'pix or it didn't happen' people here) but luckily they weren't anything harmful. I hope your wife gets well quickly.

Also my mum was a head nurse in fertility and birth department in a government hospital. I guess I had a flu shot when I was a little chap since my last flu sickness dates beyond 15 years. I hope those military doctors won't kill me when I enlist there.

Say hi from me to your wife, also my best wishes sir : )

I don't think I've ever had the flu shot. I probably have only had it once or twice in my life, all when I was younger. I rarely get sick. The last last shot I had was for Meningococcal Meningitis because there was a strain of it going around where my parents lived and I was home from college for one semester.

I believe flu shots work, and I think a lot of these bad things that happen are a coincidence, but I don't see the need to get a shot. The flu changes every year, I think the best way to protect myself against it is to actually get it. I don't really care about getting other people sick, I'll just stay away from them while I am sick.

Honestly the world has too many people in it anyway. Let the weak die.

Some people cannot get a flu shot due to being allergic to eggs. The sera is developed on chicken eggs and to get a shot could kill them.
