In my opinion not worth the money. I find myself playing a lot only because I want to get my money worth out of it. lol I take it as a bad sign if I actually have to force myself to sit down and play it. It's not completely horrible though. Also, I suck at it so maybe when I become better i'll like it a little more. |

Oh jeeze, I really haven't tried enough to pick a favorite. Normally I prefer whiskey or brandy, mainly because I had heard single malt scotch "tastes horrible." And then I tried Glenlivet on a coworker's suggestion... and then Glenfiddich on my dad's suggestion.... yeah, I was freaking sold. The scotch selection at my local liquor store is rather slim, though, so I haven't tried any other single malts. I CAN say Glenfiddich has a 50yr vintage that I want to try. But, yeah, if you've got any suggestions for scotch you feel is a "must try," let me know and I'll try to find or order them somehow. |

They are all unique ... Glenlivet is very light ... Glenfiddich less so ... The Glen Scotia was good with a nice finish ... The Glen Grant was exceptionally smooth but at $125 a bottle (25 yr old), it is not your everyday scotch. As a rather inexpensive regular scotch the Balvenie is good. I have had Glenmorangie, Jura, Glenkinche ... of those the Jura was nice, Glenmorangie was as well. Honestly cannot remember the last. For an "everyday" brand I usually have a bottle of Grant's (blended) on hand. I also have a Gaelic Blended which I quite enjoyed (Mac Na Mara) and Te Bheag. I would read some tasting notes online before investing in an expensive bottle. The Glen Scotia we brought in special by having a group order a full case (12 bottles) all of which were spoken for on arrival. The gentleman who arranged it is a wine connaisseur and so had the contacts needed to do this. It was one of the last bottling runs from that particular distillery.

Thank you, sir. I do remember my dad recommending (or at least talking about,) Balvenie and Glenmorangie. Heh, that was part of the problem when I sat down to have a glass with him. He was staying at the local "nice" hotel and we were in their lounge... they must have had at least 18 different varieties, and he was going into what you mentioned: how they all have different characters, how some have the really earthy peat taste, and some are mild, etc., etc.
But, yeah, I'll definitely keep the ones you listed in mind next time I'm out. Also:
Where do you meet people like this? I've been wanting to look into some of the rarer vintages for ANY alcohol, and the best I've come close to is ordering online from a British webpage, which I suppose is fine, but just wondering how you come across someone like that if I ever wanted to get advice beyond tasting notes. |

Tom was a friend and work colleague and was very into the wine collecting thing (told me a story having paid $800 for a demi of an 1800s wine and it being stolen out the delivery van before it got to the wine vault where it was to be stored). But our local liquor corporation annually holds a Spirit Fest, Rum Fest and Wine Fest featuring what you might expect. Apparently there are equivalents to single malts in rums ... who knew? I used to get free tickets as I did legal work for the corp.
EDIT: I also travelled with another colleague with a modest wine collection (only 4-5 thousand bottles) and saw him drop $1200 on 20 bottles of wine. Same trip he and I had dinner and while I was prepared to have a modest meal we ended up at restaurant where we had wine pre-meal, during and after for a total price of $300 for the two of us. Lucky for me he was expensed cause I was on government business and only entitled to something like $40 per day total (Shot my budget to hell). This message has been edited.
