I have broken rules 1-5.
Its so hard maintaining a proper diet being a college student and a hard core gamer. Its a double whammy. Once school is over I am planning on replacing some of my classes with the gym. Its all about motivation after that. so hopefully you all will see a healthier and more fit psyche in the next few months. |

That was a great blog, Rhoulette!
Drinking lots of water does wonders for your general health, as well. I usually try and keep a big water bottle next to me while I game... I end up drinking the whole thing without even realizing it. Also, I found it helpful to keep my hand weights on my feet while I play R6V2. When I'm sitting in the game lobby I do leg lifts with them on. It's an easy way to keep my legs in shape. |

Um didn't you tell me you were going to start a more healthy lifestyle back at MLG? Shame on thee. |

Those are great tips, too, Caly! Water is key for sooooo many reasons. My theory is that 80% of the time that I'm grumpy it's because I'm dehydrated. I've also found that being dehydrated makes me think slower and fall asleep in class more often. Lots of water FTW. And the weights on the feet thing is brilliant! I'm going to adopt that for when I'm sitting at my desk chair for hours each day. I can take little breaks to do leg lifts while my computer loads stuff or while on the phone during conference calls. |

Nice blog Rhoulette!
Unfortunately, I have broken rules 1,2 and 4. And I plan to rectify the situation as soon as possible. Oh, and I walk at least 20 stories up the stairs everyday, as my elevator is a little wonky, so I have to walk 20 stories up to get to my own house. (I live in a 20 story apartment.) And yes, drinking water is always important. |

Meh, I walk everywhere anyway. Time was I used to walk/run such distances that I would sweat my system clean... oh, the leg cramps at night!
Eat more brown bread, you say? Also, I only have sugar in tea (and only one at that); I stopped taking it with cereal years ago. I rarely eat sweets or have fizzy drinks these days either. Cake though? Well, who can resist a nice bit of raspberry cheesecake? Not me as it turns out... I am not a pasty-faced gamer! I be a good example of the rural dweller stereotype! Maybe |

Great blog! I really like this stuff so I have a bunch of **** to blab about... sorry if it's excessive....
Always remember if you're trying to get in shape, lose pounds or whatnot, you need both diet and exercise. You can't be successful with just one of the two. Wake up to water - Drink 16 oz. of chilled water first thing when you wake up boosts your metabolism by 25% for 90 minutes. Eat breakfast - I know you talked about eating smaller meals, but I'm a huge proponent of a big breakfast no matter which route you go. Not Denny's double sausage scrambler big, but for example my usual breakfast is a bowl of oatmeal with blueberries/rasberrys and some scrambled eggs. You want to eat a lot of your carbs and fatty foods early in the day since it's easier to burn them off throughout. Plus it makes those smaller meals easier to bear as the day goes on. If you run or walk at all as a part of your fitness plan, try lifting weights beforehand. Not super Ahnawld weights, but light stuff. Pick 4 or 5 different exercises and do a couple sets of reps before you do your cardio. Studies show it increases the benefits of your running/walking by up to 17%. If you do any abdominal/core stuff, do it after you run. If you're trying to shed pounds, weigh yourself once, and then don't weigh yourself again for a month. It takes 28 days to form a habit, and I've found that not seeing any poundage lost while you're forming them can be pretty discouraging. So focus on 'Just Doing It' at first, then worry about stepping on the scale later. Have a junk food day. Write down all your cravings throughout the week, and then pick a day to junk out. It makes you less likely to take on a couple Oreos here, and a pizza there during the week. If you can, cheat on a workout day since your body will still soak up a lot of the excess carbs and fat, instead of storing it in fatty tissue spots, like your belly. Choose meals you can prepare beforehand. Buy a bag of those frozen chicken breasts, and cook them all at once. Then during the week, grab one, chop it up, throw it on a bed of baby spinach, a dash of your favorite vinagrette, and you've got a meal in less than 5 minutes. Get some sleep! I know it's hard for us gamers, but just 3 nights a week of poor sleep makes our bodies more resistant to hormones that help us burn fat, like insulin. This leads to more fat storage in the dun dun DUN... belly area! Guys, don't measure your progress by the size of your belly. In addition to being the hardest area to shed fat from, historians theorize that since male humans evolved as the hunter/gatherers, that their bodies store more fat in the belly area as to not impede walking/running, and so they could travel longer periods without eating. Females supposedly tend to gather more fat in their legs and buttocks since they spent more time preparing the food, sharpening spears or whatever. (I can see how that'd be a touchy issue, so just know it's only something I read! @____@) Last but not least, don't give up! Losing weight/getting in shape is a REALLY hard thing to do! If you know someone who's trying to shed pounds, give them a congratulations sometime and let them know you're cheering for them. |

Nice blog and responses! I've been on a nutrition (and exercise) plan since November, and I can say without a doubt, much of how your body deals with the calories you consume has to do with your glycemic response to what you eat. Critical to getting your body to not store those calories, but rather burn them through your daily activity and exercise is to make sure you eat foods that balance out your glycemic response. I always pair more fatty foods with some sort of protein for instance. And of course if you can do it, measuring out what you eat and how much (# calories, percentage breakdown of those calories by %fat/%protein/%carb) you eat based on your exercise level will produce the best results for what you're trying to accomplish. Obviously that's a bit hardcore as opposed to getting a gamer in better shape.
One point I actually disagree with is #5. I eat a healthy, low calorie (for me < 300 calorie) snack right before bed - it's the last thing I do before hitting the hay. It stimulates your metabolism to continue to burn energy while you sleep. If you go long durations of not eating (say 12 hours between dinner and breakfast), your body will go into starvation mode and start saving up calories the best it can. It's the same thought as having 5 smaller meals ( I do 6 ) throughout the day, break it up, keep your metabolism up. Your body will burn those calories and more as you sleep. Your snack can't be a late night Taco Bell run tho... |

There's no real right or wrong to eating before bed... if it works for you then that's great. My thoughts on the issue are that dieting should never be torturous, so if you're hungry, then eat something. If you're going to eat before bed try to pick something like fresh fruit (I like sliced pineapple personally). Stay away from fatty foods (duh) since they cause indigestion, and spicy foods (heartburn).

You don't want to eat any fruits before bed, due to the high fructose content. That alone contains a high glycemic wich will make the body store/convert into unwanted calories. *Everyone needs to drop the haterade and show some love with my foot up your *ss, |

I agree with all of your tips but just mainly drink water and eat less and only when your hungry: For example, eat 1 hamburger...nothing else, leave out the chips and other side stuff. If u think about your stomach is as big as your closed fist. But for dramatic results do situps, for instance in halo 3, while waiting for people to be found and the game to start, just keep doing situps. Granted u have to get used to it a bit because those load times can be a little long and if you arent feeling pain in your chest u havent done enough. U need to do it to point to where your sore and then keep doing the situps no matter how bad the pain because it will feel worse if u dont. TRUST ME THIS WILL WORK...IF YOU STICK TO IT. Its been working for me and because of it Im in pretty damn good shape. You might have to just put the game down all together, do something constructive and not as much of a waste of time, and u know who you are if you play to much!
