Unfortunately, the trend among some major developers (hint hint) is to release A-list games with lots of hype, but lots of bugs. By the time they get around to addressing these problems, many gamers have lost interest and moved on to other games.
Heck, just look at the Far Cry forums that I help moderate as a perfect example of this. I hear the Rainbow Six forums are even worse.

Oh I remember Far Cry 2....I ended up exchanging it at Best Buy for Dead Space. I came across a couple of bugs that would not let me get past a certain point in the game. I'd rather not play with my fingers crossed and so I would never touch that game. A real shame, however, because I thought it had potential.

Nice blog Cella. Finally a good reason for innovation to actually replace imitation and iteration.
Some irony for ya: I'm reminded of American McGee being pretty upset that his Oz game didn't get finished and I think it was due to a preference by publishers to just put out sequels/annuals. He made an understandably bitter comment about the focus on those games instead of true creativity. Now, in this economy, is when the sequel to HIS creative masterpiece was announced.
--- Going out for the internet know-it-all douchebag of the year award.

Yeah, that corrupt save issue is one of the problems that they've said is going to be included in the upcoming patch - although when that will be is anyone's guess at this point.
@ moonsongv1 - console game sales are doing pretty well - thanks in large part to "family crap".
I used to be a test lead for a testing house (before, you know, the economy happened.) Oh man, it was great... my attitude went from, "didn't they find these bugs?" before seeing the process, to, "didn't the publisher care about these blocks?" after seeing the process.
Unfortunately, as sales slump, publishers will probably push for less innovation as developers push for more. I'm not going to go off on some indie "big companies are ruining the industry and suppressing my art!" rant, because publishers and developers have to make money. It's the nature of a business. However, hopefully this little wake up call to the previously "recession proof" industry will be enough to--as we slowly pull ourselves out of it--push all relevant parties in the industry to innovate more. If that can happen, I totally agree with your comment about sealing developers' spots in the gaming market.
With some of the games that have come out recently, I'd rather spend my $50 (or $60 if it's for my PS3) on a bottle of mediocre bottle of whiskey than on some of those games (hell, and movies.)
Even though there have been cuts in the gaming industry it hasn't been hurt as bad as others when it comes to sales. Due to more people are willing to pay the money for a game that will cover many nights of entertainment, rather than for just one night out for dinner and a movie.
