Hi.

I got the game about a year ago, and I could play it perfectly back then. But then six months ago I gave my PC a RAM upgrade from 128 MB, adding 512 MB (but not much else). Everything worked out great, the PC is much faster in everything, games, etc.... except when I decided to play BG&E again.

The game started VERY slowly since the beginning and throughout gameplay. I put all the advanced settings to minimum, and it still ran very slowly. So I applied the 1.01 patch, updated my NVidia 2 MX (TESTED) drivers, and now I could disable anti-aliasing easily.

The result: 2FPS... in the least demanding parts.

And this is with:

Resolution 640x480
60Hz refresh rate
All advanced settings low/off
Autodetected compatibility settings

I've also tried setting all compatibility settings 'on' like the ReadMe recommends in order to increase frame rate, but it only gets a little better. I have no idea what else to do!

This is the only game I have that has a problem as serious as this. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure that adding the RAM was the only thing that changed? I can't imagine that could cause this problem.

Well, we did get the hard disk formatted and the XP OS reinstalled (which I thought was obvious for someone with a slow computer to do, so I forgot to mention that), but this was done by a professional technician who installed the RAM as well, so I don't know exactly what he did. Again, this is the only game that has this kind of problem, so if the dxdiag doesn't report anything wrong overall, then I think it could be a problem with conflicts between the video card's settings (triple buffering, vertex stream, anisotropic rendering, vertical sync, etc.), which I know nothing of, and the game itself. Any help on this, or any other ideas, would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does it change anything if you disable settings in the Compatibility settings? I haven't heard about this particular problem yet.

Disabling settings doesn't do anything significant, sorry.

If it's any help, the NVidia Control panel lists the following values, some of which can be switched on, off, or application-controlled. (I've already tried ALL values on application-controlled, but it's still the same result):

Triple-buffer (on/off)
Line smoothing configuration (2X/4X/app control)
Texture filtering (Quality/performance/high performance)
Anisotropic filter
Force mipmaps (None/bilinear/trilinear)
Negative LOD inclination(?) (Allow/hold)
Extension limit (on/off)
Vertical sync

It could be a conflict with some other software that's causing the problem. Try to perform a clean boot:

Follow the procedures in the "How to perform a clean boot in Windows XP" section and reboot the system (keep in mind that this will probably disable firewall and antivirus software). Now try to run the game again and see if makes any difference. Afterwards you can read the "How to return from a clean boot state" section to set everything back to normal.

Running the game on clean boot makes no difference whatsoever (not even without "loading system services").

Odd, let's see if the soundcard has anything to do with it: click Start > Run... > type "dxdiag" and enter > Sound tab > reduce the sound hardware acceleration and run the game again.

That doesn't do anything either, sorry...

Um, hey, me again.

I solved it.

Turns out that, according to the NVidia support page, the most recent NVidia driver supports the GeForce MX and GeForce MX400 cards, but not the GeForce MX/MX400, which I have. Obviously!

Well, I had to assume that my MX/MX400 was one of them "MX integrated graphics" cards they talk about, and see if "downdating" my driver would do something good. So I had to go to a much older driver (93.71 to 66.93), which does support my card correctly.

Now I can play at a much more decent speed with all the settings at max! (I'd still need to lower them and the resolution to get fluid gaming all the time, but you won't see me complaining about that anytime soon

Hmmmm.... Interestingly enough, this problem sounds very similar to a problem many users (myself included) are having with Worms World Party. The problem occurs only with a combination of nVidia graphics cards past the 5000 generation (6000+) and drivers past version 66.93.

I'm trying out the demo to BG&E right now and while it runs tremendously slow in areas with water (strange since my system easily beats the minimum requirements), I haven't had quite the same experience as I've had with Worms World Party or that you've had with BG&E.

I seem to be having the same problem with my Geforce 6800XT. I also had problems with WWP. BGE ran fine on my ATI 9800pro. I think thegsusfreak is right here about the drivers, as nvidia drivers get newer, they support fewer older games. Perhaps I will try the Omega drivers and revisit this site.

Well, the Nvidia Omega drivers are years old, so they will work if your video card is as old as they are (mine is not quite that old, but it works at full speed with many artifacts; the closest the drivers could come to my card was a plain 6800). So I tried DNA-force, no luck.

If anyone can get it to work, Nvemulate will attempt to, well, emulate a geforce fx5800 which I believe is compatible with BGE. Let me know if you get it to work.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but if anyone is, say, buying a new computer and can't decide what video card to get (and still wants to play BG&E), here's my two cents. I recently bought an intel based system, quad core (Q6600 2.4ghz) with 2GB ram, and I settled on an Nvidia BFG 8800 GT. I ran Vista at first, but got a little fed up and switched back to XP. A while after I put it all together something reminded me of BG&E, and I decided to see how it would run on all this new hardware. After some tweaking, I found that I could turn everything on high and play at 1920x1440 although it seems to play a bit better with the W buffer off. There is a bit of artifacting but it is minimal and the game is smooth. So I can safely recommend the 8800 series, although if you play a ton of old games, you may be better off with an ATI...
