Just picked up Hawx for PC in the clearance aisle at my local Target for $7.48 plus tax.

I already have the PS3 version, so this is a better deal than spending $15 for the DLC for PS3 since I also found the PC "David" profile which has all the standard planes and campaigns already open and ready to fly. But while that profile provides access to other planes in TDM, none of them are open in campaign until you reach the higher ranks. It will take a long time to get up the ranks to open these planes for campaign and free flight which I think is too bad.

I'm using a Vista running quad core Q6600 with 6GB RAM and Nvidian GT 9500 graphics card with and 19" HD monitor

Findings:

1. Graphics are good but not as clean as the PS3 on a 42" HD TV

2. Frame rate is not as smooth as on the PS3

3. Typhoon mission on the PC nicely has rain coming down on the cockpit when flying below cloud level, but this is not present on the PS3

4. I took an old Thrustmaster Afterburner Joystick with throttle and managed to use WVista to calibrate it. Flies pretty well, though I can't adjust the deadzone. From a flying around standpoint it works pretty well, from a tight TDM fight, control is not as refined as with a PS3 or Xbox style controller or keyboard control. Mouse/trackball flight control is okay, but moving a mouse around means I sometimes have to lift my logitech MX revolution wireless mouse and reposition it so I don't fall of the desk as I'm moving around.

5. To use the "David" profile, you have to create a profile 5 letter profile (i.e. Viper)first(though you can have a longer name, the first 5 letters end up being your callsign on PC), then go into the profile folder, copy the "David" profile to overwrite the "Viper" file. The Viper.key profile can be left alone. Start the game up, play the first mission and upon completing the mission you get the 4000 and 5000 points for "completing all missions in hard and elite" which makes you get to level 10 after 1 session. After that, everything is open to play.

I'll now have to experiment with skin mods to have fun with Hawx on PC.

If you install the patch 1.02, you should be able to adjust your deadzone.

rofl...

i average 250+ fps in HAWX, never dropping below 130fps; i have no idea how a PS3 can do better than that. either your PC is old, you've got vsync on, or your eyesight is poor.

the PC version is the only acceptable one, because of modding abilities.

and the 'david' profile combined with another special .lua file unlocks literally everything, in campaign or otherwise. even at lvl 1, everything is available in campaign for me.

So what kind of a system are you running to get that kind of frame rate and did you simplify some of the settings to get that kind of frame rate?

For those looking for the David profile:

Where can we find the .LUA profile so we don't have to go through the whole campaign (though it's not that hard to do) and play endless rounds of TDM

i'm running an OC'ed quad-core opteron(@3GHz), with SLI 8800GTX's, also overclocked. i use RAID solid-state drives and have 4GB of 1066 DDR2.

i run everything at max settings. i have no idea where to find the .lua file, and i'm not going to spend my time googling for it - if you want it, snoop for it.

trying to compare the graphics performance of a console to that of a PC is nothing but circular hyperbole, so honestly i'm not interested in debating it. i stated my experience(s); thats as far as i'm going beyond the trivial assistance i have thus offered.

Nice system. Not everyone can have such a system. For the average joe with average PC who doesn't want to deal with PC mod cheaters, the consoles provide a more uniform base with better performance than the average PC (of which mine is).

I at least try to be helpful to other posters by providing information whenever available. Still haven't found the .LUA file on a google search but am still looking. One posters blog removed has nothing on his web page. Anyway, as I've been playing the console HAWx on PS3, I'm learning about the PC version ($8 legitimate copy was a good deal). It appears on the other component of this forum, other posters seem to be having problems getting it to run online.

Will post if I find anything new.

cheers

pfffft. thats bull, because i use my PC for everything. if people didnt have a PC, a cellphone, an ipod, a PS3/360, a large flatscreen HDTV, a dvd collection, a nice car, etc.

i give those up to have a nice system. its nonsense to say 'not everyone can have a system like that' when in fact they can, they simply choose to have a dozen toys instead of a single expensive one.

Not to quibble, but I'll take the dvd collection over any, and I mean ANY, high end PC.

Plus the necessity of a cell-phone cannot be ignored. Plus it's nice to have a nice tv and not just sit at a computer desk 24/7. And having portable music (whether an iPod or the old-fashioned CD Walkman) is invaluable. Plus the car....

You get what I'm saying. I have a Mac, and I use it for internet, music recording and my wife uses it for digital art. Other than that, we don't need it for insane graphics video games. I've spent far, far more on music equipment than on computers. Owning a computer these days is vital; owning a high end computer is not.

My PC will outperform the consoles too but nobody should be surprised. Even lower end video cards will output to 1080p (or better) now...
