perhaps i can swallow the gas and takeoff/landing issues but NO COCKPIT VIEW if i don't want the AI to hold my hand during a dogfight?? WHY??? it's not like it would take extra time to code this in - the programming required for all camera views is done already! why not give the choice to players what camera view to use?

so in multiplayer, i have to choose between playing with assistance-on and never really push my aircraft to its limits OR playing with assistance-off and never find out what it's like to be inside the aircraft doing all those fancy maneuvers.

Ubi, like many here (and i'm sure a whole lot more in the future), i do not understand why you would do this. this "special camera" is very disorienting and gives an advantage to the other guy. i am sure you know this. it seems to me you are DELIBERATELY trying to HANDICAP people from becoming really good pilots in this game. i mean, how can anyone really be called ace pilots in this game if there's no REAL piloting done anyway? it's either flying with a teacher or not flying at all. playing in assistance-off mode will be akin to playing a racing game with a camera view from the bleachers. can you imagine “need for speed” doing this?

i bet every single official review of this game (gamespot, gamespy, 1UP, etc) will mention this issue and rank this game LOWER than what it would have gotten if cockpit view (or even 3rd person view) is allowed for assistance-off. i hope you will rectify this situation before this product reaches the shelves.
he speaks very much truth. but i highly doubt they will change this. although it would be cool to have as a firmware update later

I couldn't see this but will damage to the plan affect specific systems meaning they are either in operable or only partially operable or will there be one straight up 100% health meter.

if they do, all will be well. =)

choice should be given to the player. if playing with assistance-off and sitting in the cockpit means the level of difficulty is raised, so be it. if i crash, i crash. but at least i will know the limits of my aircraft - in first person view. that's how i want to improve - learning from my mistakes. perhaps next time around (or more realistically, a dozen times after), i will be able to pull off the difficult maneuver on my own and feel a sense of fulfillment greater than any experience assistance-on mode can give me.

ok, that's out my chest now. thanks for listening. cheers. =)

Despite waiting on this game for over a year, I will not be purchasing it. Not having take-offs and landings is a deal breaker. How can you design a flight sim game without the most basic and integral aspects of flying?

forget calling it a flight sim, how can you have an "action game" based on flying that cant explain how you get into the air in the first place, but even more important to me: how do you explain no cockpit view with assistance mode off? Will I have an out of body experience if I turn off my car while driving down the interstate?

I fully agree with Anarki001, as well. I've been following this game since it's announcement, and while there are several things I'm really stoked about (Jaguar, A-6, YF-23, AV-8B, & A-7!! w00t!), the lack of take off and landing for carrier and airfield based aircraft is ridiculous. No refueling or re-arming? No cockpit view with assistance off? Veteran flight combat fans like us are getting pigeon holed in an area that shouldn't even be an issue.

I can't believe refueling, and take off/landing scenarios have been deemed inappropriate for this game considering it's pedigree. And that the Ace Combat series (a series which is largely fictitious, even sci-fi, and much more arcade focused) includes them without second thought.

I'm shocked that H.A.W.X. is taking such a drastic arcade approach considering this is under the well respected Tom Clancy name brand. A brand that carries with it an air of realism and accuracy that people expect(first TC flight combat title or not). I'm thinking the TC brand going to loose some cred.

So once again, it's looking like we'll be getting stuck with another over the top flight combat game with skewered aircraft tech specs, a ridiculous pay load, gimped gameplay, and abbreviated features. *sigh* Still, it's better than nothing. And I really need my fix. lol :P

I really would like to know how the exclusive pre-order aircraft work. All I know is the Strike Raptor is available through pre-ordering with GameStop (here in the States), but I don't know about the Avenger II and the F/A-18 HARV. Also how does the VIP system work? And will the pre-order aircraft be made available as DLC later? I'm 'gonna be miffed if I'm forced to choose which aircraft I can get through pre-ordering with different retailers.

So when in cockpit view I have to have that crappy yellow triangle thing telling me where to go?

UPDATE 24.07.2008

"Will there be a free flight mode, where you can just fly around the map? If yes, will you also be able to fly only online or only solo?

Yes, you will be able to play any map without any enemy or objective, just for flying. This is in both solo and adversarial modes.
