only these aircraft listed have HMD(Helmet Mounted Display) capability: F-35, F-22, Rafale, EF-2000, SU-35, SU-37, JAS-39C Gripen. That is about it, and I am not sure on the gripen. along with the HMD however is an integrated JHMCS(Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System) that enables the pilot to slave his missile's seeker to his helmet's alignment. Also, the "glass" thing you refer to is called a Heads Up Display and certain models of the F-35 do not even have one as all pilots are required to wear JHMCS equipped helmets anyways. The only odd thing about the F-35 HMD is that you can only recieve certain information such as TTS, laser status, TTI and such while looking forward to where the HUD is supposed to be. Also, any target that is manually locked up on radar in any mode will show up on your helmet with a direction and a flashing box around it. this is so the F-35 pilot knows where the enemy is even if he is beneath the aircraft allowing him to launch an AIM-9X right under him. The really unique thing about the HMD for the F-35 is that any small high speed object maintaining or recieving lockup information via radar will show up with a red box around it so that the pilot is able to know exactly where the missile coming at him is at any given time. Talk about high tech. The F-22A has all of this, but still retains the old fashioned holographic HUD. For tradition and nostalgic purposes to the old pilots I suppose.

I think the super hornet has that ability too. There's another plane that has that feature too.

If i had to pick i would lose the cockpit view for real type load outs, i take a stunning looking flight game with limited missiles over see a cockpit and 60+ per wing..
I did like over -G with the option on reloading missiles, so i say options is what we need.. I had a good idea, have real limited missiles per plane, but as you go up in rank a option to swap your points for a second bunch of missiles or remove some damage..!! Shocking to some, but a idea.. |

I honestly did not read the entire thread but im giving an answer anyway, There is a cockpit view, however, it is not like switching from cockpit to chase view. There is something called assistance mode, im not gonna explain it all, but basicly on, EZ mode, cockpit view and so on, off, difficult, more choices, chase view

You need to look at any so called realistic Driving Game. Forza Motorsports. Gran Turismo Prologue. Gran Turismo simulated the 'cockpits' of the cars to a fine degree. Forza did not, but still allowed you a general 'In Car' view which most people use to drive. However Cockpit Views in flight games create problems of Situational Awareness for all but experienced pilots. The majority of gamers will find a 3rd person view more acceptable and easier to play with. However, to use the Driving analogy, you get the best control when cornering from an In Car view. Similarly for many people they get the best 'feel' of the aircraft from an 'in-cockpit' view. The Preview posted on IGN did not mention any Player to Target views, or a way to Lock Eyes to your target. When maneuvering in 3D Space with 6 degrees of freedom, the ability to keep your eyes on your target, and know where your plane is in relation to it at all times, is crucial to executing any one of a number of complex maneuvers to line up your nose and bring your weapons to bear. Most of the recent Arcade style flight games seem to forget this. Also from the IGN Article, flying without the ERS system seems to remove absolutely all of the basic Situational Awareness cues from the screen. This can't be a good thing, and in my view basic information: Attitude Indicator Altitude Flight Speed Compass Targeting Should always be present. There should be a consistent HUD for a jet fighter, unless the intention is to simulate constant equipment failure while the ERS is off ;-). Car Racing games have already gone through this process of Realistic/Arcade and how to present this to the player. The multi million selling games have found the winning formula - Forza, Gran Turismo etc. I think that UBISOFT should look at the user selectable gameplay options in those and adapt them to a Jet and they may be able to maximise their player base just fine. -Gel214th System Specs for Tech Support: Dell 710H2C|Quad Core|4 Gig RAM|8800GTX SLI|X-FI|24" Monitor |
