Not the drink, the storms. Add one more to the list I've survived in 42 years. Power just came back on here. It went out about 10 am Monday, so this was worse for me than Katrina was. Baton Rouge got hit harder than it did by Andrew back in 1992. Wish me luck; it appears that Ike is heading this direction now.

Yeah, same here. Everyone in Miami is bordering up their windows and doing lots of grocery shopping. I hope my car doesn't go flying away. -_-'

That's why I live in Oregon. I'm probably too far inland for a tsunami, and earthquakes are really not that often here. Also volcanoes are the least of my worries Tongue

My cousin lives in the Bahamas so they're also expecting Hurricanes. I'm so glad I live in Aus when it comes to things likethis.

You're an idiot. Here's one photo of Biloxi after Hurricane Camille (the first hurricane I remember):

The Harrison County Library has a Camille page on their website, more photos are here:

Isn't that grounds for a BAN?

quote:

Main Entry: 1scoff
Pronunciation: \ˈskäf, ˈskȯf\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English scof, perhaps of Scandinavian origin; akin to obsolete Danish skof jest; akin to OldFrisian skof mockery
Date: 14th century
1 : an expression of scorn, derision, or contempt : gibe
2 : an object of scorn, mockery, or derision

So in essence my statement could be written as.

I hold nothing but the highest contempt for hurricanes.

I do know my vocabulary. Here's another for you:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/idiot
quote:

Main Entry:
id·i·ot Listen to the pronunciation of idiot
Pronunciation:
\ˈi-dē-ət\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English, from Anglo-French ydiote, from Latin idiota ignorant person, from Greek idiōtēs one in a private station, layman, ignorant person, from idios one's own, private; akin to Latin suus one's own — more at suicide
Date:
14th century

1usually offensive : a person affected with extreme mental retardation2: a foolish or stupid person
— idiot adjective

I still think you're an idiot. If you have contempt for something with that potential for distaster you're either foolish or stupid.

So what, should i admire a hurricane such as Katrina or Gustov or now Ike? When they come to my town i pack up and leave. I'm not foolish enough to sit and "ride it out" like some idiots as you would call them. I have no interest in sitting in the southern louisiana heat with no water or electricity for even just a few days let alone a month. The problem with the "idiots" is that they think they are tougher than the hurricane.

Admire it? No. But holding it in contempt isn't right either. Respect it for what it can do and make decisions and preparations accordingly. If I lived on the coast I wouldn't stay around either, but I'm 150 miles inland.

You wouldn't catch me living on the southern coast. No way in hell am I ever dealing with hurricanes, or tornadoes in the Plains. Mankind kills each other enough as it is.

An upcoming novel by me.
Thanks Melonie for the sig!

I don't think there is anyplace in the world free from natural disasters. The southern and east coasts get hurricanes. The west coast gets earthquakes and volcanoes. The middle part gets tornadoes. The north gets massive amounts of snow and occasionally weather so cold it causes power outages. You just wind up learning to deal with what your area gets.

Kinda true, but there are a few places that are cut down the middle.

The most threatening natural disaster where I live is boredom. >.<

We've never gotten a tornado for as long as I can remember, a few tornado watches once or twice, but never a real one. No hurricane threat this far inland. Thunder storms around here aren't that bad. We've had a "blizzard" once or twice, but they were really small.

I guess the most danger we have around here is heat and flooding in the summer, but c'mon, what place doesn't have heat risk these days?

Wow, Ike really screwed us up here in Texas...I lost power on Saturday at 3 AM and don't have it restored yet. It blipped on for a little bit, but then went back out, because there are still trees on the power lines. Hopefully we'll get power back soon, I'm having to write this at a Best Buy. Talk to you guys soon.
