Hey all. Smile

So recently I posted a picture of my new HDTV and bragged about how sexeh it is. Smile LOL

I got a surround sound system to help with the sound and HDMI for my XBox and HD cable. I'm trying to get the most I can out of this TV. So, I got paid today, but I paid all my bills due this month with my financial aid money. So I have been thinking of getting a Blu Ray player. But I have a few questions in case someone here has one.

Do I have to get another HDMI cable or do they come with?

How much are Blu Ray movies?

Do you think it was a worth while purchase?

I dont know about in the US but in the UK a bluray film is about £5 more than a normal DVD

Personally I would strongly suggest looking at the PS3, its cheaper than any bluray player we found, does the job perfectly and obviously has the nice side effect of being a console as well Smile

The PS3 doesnt come with an HDMi we had to buy it although I dont think it cost much I cant remember.

Oh and if you get one make sure you use the set up options to full effect, I was talking to someone else who took theres back complaining the picture was poor and it later turned out they hadnt set it up properly in the options so it wasnt running at 1080i when playing films

bluray is a way to go, otherwise buying a HDTV is a total waste of money (as far as movies go).

Ugh, I really hate the fact that an HDTV doesn't come with an HDMI cable. Same goes for blu ray players and PS3s. <_<

blu ray movies are pretty expensive here in the US. They're like $30. I heard that the prices will be dropping sometime this fall, though. So you're in luck. Razz

Insignia® - Blu-ray Disc Player with 1080p Output - $249.99
Sony - PlayStation 3 (80GB) - $399.99

So basically, you'd be paying $150 for the ability to play games as well. Sounds like a bargain to me ^.^

Pretty much, yea. LOL

And anyone who knows me knows I'd rather spend $7000000000000000000000 on a blu ray player than spend $.50 on a PS3.

I respect that they fit some people but they just aren't for me.

I saw a Blu-Ray player at Wal-Mart for under $300. Movies are more expensive than regular DVDs though.

Magnavox Blu-ray Disc Player, NB500MG9 for $278.

You will need another HDMI cable to connect the player to your TV.

That's fine. I mean, what's the point of getting a Blu Ray player and not getting an HDMI input.

But I didn't get one, yet. I recently got a S-Video cable so I can hook my laptop to my TV and use it as monitor. So I got a wireless mouse and keyboard so I don't have to be attached to the laptop all the time.

I'm determined to make the most of this TV!

DONT go to any big box retailer like CC, BB, etc. to get your HDMI cable, make a rule, dont let yourself spend over 20 bucks for a HDMI cable. As for Blu Ray itself, nothing much to say, its the only way your going to make use out of your new HDTV for movies. Get a PS3!!! Also, for movies, always buy what you can from a pawn shop, I kid you not, usually around 12-15 bucks for even new stuff, and Blu Rays are tough, decently hard to scratch, so thats not even an issue.

It is a bargain when you've spent months looking at bluray and find nothing cheaper than a PS3 which at the time we bought one a few months back was the case and this was purely a suggestion based on that experience. From your post thats not the case in the US but thats good because the entire point of my post was that someone check it out, and you did, thanks Smile

and there was me thinking a gamer was a gamer regardless of their platform choice Indifferent

The PS3 was a suggestion based on the question at hand, if people dont like them thats their choice but lets not get disrespectful to others about it Wink

The only things positive about a PS3 are:
- 1: cheap blu-ray
- 2: you can fold with it. See http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3651075192/m/2381030486 Smile

Ummm...that's really weird. I can't imagine somebody not going for something extra for cheaper/or very similar price...just because its not really the brand they like. o.O That'd be the equivalent to my dad refusing to drive to or from work because the company car is a Ford and he prefers GM's cars with Opels and Chevys.
But its your money and if you feel that strongly about it...then be my guest. Tongue I personally would go for the PS3.

This community has always been very XBox heavy when it comes to consoles. And I agree. I've played PS2's several times and didn't care for it. I also don't think it's that strange to see someone have a preferred brand. Some people love coke, others love pepsi. Some people prefer Microsoft over Sony, which is what you will find more here.

And I will be your guest and continue to not buy a PS3. Tongue Tongue Tongue Especially when you consider they are $150 more expensive than what I need. Most PS3 games are ports of 360 games anyway so I don't feel the need to spend the money on another console.

Ok well I'm not particularly for one or the other. I'm more for PC now than I was a few months back but I'd still take either a Xbox or PS3 if I had the money. I take it you already have an Xbox. That's different. I thought you didn't have either and didn't want a PS3 just because its a PS3.And when it comes to bias I suppose I am biased toward Intel instead of AMD and nVidia instead of ATI.

Jackie everyone has their favourite and there’s nothing wrong with that (I don’t recall saying there was). The point in my post was we can hold our own favour without being disrespectful to those outside our favour. This community may be Xbox heavy but that doesn’t mean those who prefer PC or PS3 want to hear their favoured system slatted for no reason.

So as mentioned earlier let’s keep the thread respectful.
