Alright, so I'm looking into building my first PC sometime around the end of march, after I finish my PC Tech and Troubleshooting class.
I found this motherboard, which claims to use a memory standard of DDR2 1333, but it seems that such a standard doesn't exist. What standard can/would/should I install? Is this a matter of OCing another standard (say, DDR2 1066)? The rest of the PC: Antec Sonata III w/ 500W Earthwatts PSU Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8GHz 2x Western Digital 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s in RAID 0 2x EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+ LG Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16xDVD burner Logitech 600 keyboard Logitech G5 laser mouse Will be running Windows 7 Beta . Possibly dual-booting with Windows Vista Business. Also, I heard that using a smaller HDD (~80GB) to boot from results in faster boot rates compared to a 500GB or 1TB drive. Is there any validity to this or is it complete BS? Edit: I accidentally deleted the contents of this post, and I don't feel like finding all the links again. This message has been edited. First things first...memory...at the tech store I work at we sale a ver of that board you have linked, that basically means it supports up to 1333 (OC), you can put 667, 800, 1066, 1200, in the system, doesnt matter, as long as its DDR2. Now something you also need to know about that board is it doesnt support SLI, only crossfire, and not even full xfire at that (8x in one lane 16x in the other). I see you have 2x 9800GTX, so im assuming you had SLI in mind? Only way you will be able to achieve that is through the nvidia chipset boards (680i 780i etc.) As for the hard drive ?, it all depends on the drive, there are is a really fast WD drive called the 640AAKS (640gb), its a normal 7200rpm drive, but its faster than most any other 7200rpm, so not really true, there are also perpendicular drives that tend to be faster than reg 7200rpm drives. If you want fast though, look at the Velociraptor hard drives or putting two drives in RAID.
One other thing about your vid card selection, id look at going with one card, try the GTX260 or 280's, just my opinion though, I will always stick with a one card solution. Anyways, if you want my opinion on other stuff just send me a pm. 12/30/2006 XXXXDDDD I miss you. "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise" -1 Cor 1:27 |

NO NO NO, ur making a big mistake, ATI is in the lead and the 4870 X2's dominate those cards by nvidia because it has a faster clock speed and memory of GDDR5. |

Here is the Memory Support List for the motherboard you choose. It has native support of DDR2 1300 and allows memory to be OCed to 1366. I am sure that there other memory that isn't listed will work, as long as you get the right speed.

I can't believe I overlooked that. Yeah, I meant to find one with SLI. Though, I'm rather attached to that board now.... After doing a bit more research though, CrossFire seems to be the cheaper way to go As for 1 card vs 2 cards, I've done systems with 1 card, and I'd like some experience building a system using two to learn how to configure them. Not to mention the first-hand experience obtained by observing the practical difference between 1-card and 2-card setups. I'm going to need all the experience I can get if I want to succeed in this field, yes? @Agentx: Heh, I'd love to set up a couple 4870 X2s, but I'm trying to stay under a budget of $1000. @WK: Sweet, thanks for that. It answers something else I was wondering about. Hmm, it seems I'll need a different PSU if I want to run dual 4850s in CrossFire mode. Bah, it's after midnight, I'll deal with that tomorrow. |

I also recommend a single card. Here's why:
1) a single video card, these days, is more than capable of giving you the resolution and features you want. 1920x1200 resolution with 8x AA and 16x AF? You can do it with a single top end video card. No need to buy two. 2) there are limits on combination cards. With SLI, they have to be identical. With Crossfire, they don't, but to properly work you still need them to be fairly close in performance. When one breaks a year or two down the road, you won't be able to buy a matching one, so you'll wind up having to shell out on two more. ______________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Actually the GTX295 will outperform the 4870X2, but the 4870X2 is a awesome card, id still go nvidia though even if it was with the cards I mentioned, just because I love there driver support, if a game doesnt run good out of the box, nvidia will make it run good, thats what I love about them, ATI most of the time is behind when it comes to drivers. Plus you get PhysX support with nvidia cards, also im nvidia biased :/ @cooldude Yeah nothing beats experience, if your getting into the computer hardware field, employers want people that can help them now, not later with training. Plus school can only take you so far. As for the power supply, a 500w is fine for 2 4850's, but if you want to upgrade to two higher end card, I recommend goin a head and getting higher wattage psu so you wont have to mess with it down the road. Just dont go overboard, you dont need a 1000w psu or even 850 for that matter. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...Item=N82E16817256045 Thats one of the best around, its a 700w that will outperform most 800w psu's, its also modular which I personally love, basically it comes with a set amount of cables, you can plug in or take out however many connections you need or dont need, instead of having a huge mess of unused cables laying the case. PC power and cooling make nice ones as well. 12/30/2006 XXXXDDDD I miss you. "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise" -1 Cor 1:27 |

Very nice choice on the HD-DVD/Blu-ray drive!
I have that same one, and it performs like a champ! I will warn you this: the version of PowerDVD that comes with it gets ****y when you put it on 7. I'd reccomend dual booting Vista with it.(or XP if you want) PS. I have a copy of XP MCE if you want it. I have the fifth freedom... so watch out, here I come Originally registered July 17, 2002 |

So I ordered the parts earlier this evening. It's slightly altered from my earlier list, and due to budget constraints I couldn't get dual graphics cards (though I have the option to do so later). But it'll still be a fun build, I hope.
Gigabyte Mobo Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8GHz 2x Patriot Viper 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 250GB in RAID 0 Sapphire Radeon 4850 LG Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16xDVD burner Antec NeoPower 650 Blue Antec Nine Hundred (I like my shiny Logitech 600 keyboard Logitech G5 laser mouse Will be dual-booting Windows Vista Business (I get a free license for it with one of my classes) and Windows 7 Beta. Hopefully it'll arive by Friday. I could actually have something to do over the weekend. Thanks for the advice, everyone |
